    Remember him scoring the goal in a 1 0 win against QPR in the League Cup at Selhurst on the night the floodlights failed.

    Really sad news. He was a lion of a defender with legs the size of tree trunks, always had time for fans and was one of my favourite players of that era. RIP Rambo.

    Terrible news - a real Lionheart of a player in that great team that kept us up in 86/87. We called him the Lion in our house on account of his Panini 86 pic.

    One of my first Charlton heroes, an absolute rock of a defender, years later before twitter lost the plot I occasionally chatted with him, he was a sweet lovely humble guy. I'm gutted to hear this news.
    RIP Rambo. You'll be a hero to me always.

    I've just sent that very same picture to someone who was asking me about him. I believe it was taken on the opening day of the season at "home" to Sheffield Wednesday (1-1) in our first game back in the big league after promotion. He got the shiner courtesy of a deliberate elbow from Lee Chapman, which happened right in front of me. Mind you, Thommo definitely gave as good as he got that day - pretty sure he went straight through Chapman a few times!

    Dave Swindlehurst, who was a big old boy himself, was carried off at Roker after a perfectly fair challenge by Thommo. He was tough, but I'd never call him dirty, it was just that an accidental collision with him was like being hit by a truck!

    That's sad.

    As a long suffering West Londoner, Thommo put a big smile on my face when he scored the winner v QPR at Selhurst in the League Cup. Might have been his only goal for the club.

    Very sad news, and so soon after losing Jorge.
    Brings back some wonderful memories of sunny Saturday afternoons at Selhurst with my late Dad in the Sainsbury's end. Curbs doing his pre match stretching routine against the goalpost, and Thommo (Rambo) a colossal figure with curly locks and legs the size of tree trunks. 
    An absolute bargain of a signing, solid as a rock and not short of skill either.
    RIP Steve and condolences to his family.

    40 years ago and those signings and subsequent promotion seemed like they’d never happen in my lifetime at that point, even  though I was only 15 at the time .
    proper hard player , from some of our best footballing times

    Ah, no. My abiding memory of him is demolishing an advertising hoarding behind the goal at Selhurst in his efforts to get back and block the ball, against Liverpool I think? He was one of those players that you never got less than 100% effort from, and one of the reasons why that promotion team rekindled my family's love for Charlton.

    I remember that too...at The Holmesdale End. Ground was pretty hard due to cold temperature. We scrapped out a 0-0, which looking back, was a tremendous result.
