Very sad news, indeed. He was an old-school centre half who took no prisoners. Formed a great partnership with John Pender. Great player. RIP Rambo

Steve Thompson, played 95 games for CAFC where he was the quintessential hard man CB.
Sheffield born with Yorkshire grit he overcame a bad knee injury at 18 which kept him out for a year.
I saw most of his 'away matches' at Selhurst as only lived a couple of miles away at the time.

I read he was 6ft 1in but he always seems like a 6ft 4in broad shouldered, macho man that you need when you go into battle.

    RIP Steve

Truly one of Lennie's lion hearts forever putting his head in where boots and elbows were flying. Two of our great centre backs have gone within weeks of each other.

I was a young teen during the Selhurst years. At one match I was stood at the front of the half awake stand. The ball came to me and big Steve was the nearest player to me. I threw him the ball and he met it with a header that smashed into the advertising board and bounced straight back into his arms. I was completely in awe of the man. RIP

A tad before my time, but certainly a player that was spoken of fondly when I listened to others who did watch that era discuss him.  RIP, thoughts and prayers with his family and friends

    This is really sad news.

Steve was a very good player for us, always gave 100% effort and had all the best attributes you would want for a CH.

He was a sociable and approachable guy.  Sincerest condolences to his family.

Tough to hear of his death.

One of those from the amazing Lennie Lawrence years responsible for me following the team.

    RIP.

Only 95 games. Seems like a lot more to me - in a positive  way I mean. He was the first of a long line of Lennie’s successful central defense signings, paving the way for Shirtliff, Pates, Miller, McClaughlin.
Thommo was a warrior. I’m not sure if he was actually captain but he played like one either way.
    RIP.

Steve Thompson had the rare honour of captaining Charlton at Wembley in the FMC final in 1987, which unfortunately we lost. This Tom Morris picture shows him after collecting his medal, with Lennie in the foreground looking suitably disappointed and Mark Reid behind. I think the player in the rear is George Shipley (I initially wondered if it was Jim Melrose). Thommo was a great signing.

    I’m really upset.
Part of that team that made to fall in love with Charlton Athletic and not just because of my family.
    Rest in eternal peace 💔

A player that gave hundred percent every game. As someone has already said a proper old school defender. RIP Steve.

RIP Steve. Part of the team when I started going to watch as a 7yr old; those early years they were all my heroes.  Sad news.

Very sad news - legs like tree trunks, and a no nonsense defender - one of my favourites from those times

    RIP big man

I was at the New Year’s Day game at old Trafford in 88 and being in the busby suite after the game with my old man and his mate.  I was only ten but I’ll always remember Rambo going out of his way to come over and chat to us. A big character and no nonsense player from probably my favourite squad of cafc players ever. R.i.p Rambo

One of my favourites back in the day.  I met him once when I was about 10 and he seemed like an absolute man mountain!  Rambo really was an apt nickname for him

Im I’m sure he was doing some of the co-commentary on us up until the last year or so.  A real shame and a big part of a really crazy time at the club in the mid 80’s
