How lucky were we to have such a man wear our shirt?
Mourinho once reflected fondly on a story involving Costa and his incredible influence as captain of Porto.
The former Chelsea boss said: "I had captains who were not leaders. I had one at Porto,
Jorge Costa. One day, we were losing a match against a team called
Belenenses, we were down 2-0 at halftime. I was walking to the locker
room, and everyone saw I was furious.
"When I was about to enter, Jorge Costa told me, 'Wait outside for
two minutes, please.’ He went in, closed the door, and did the dirty
work for me. Then he opened the door and said, ‘Coach us.’ Because in
the locker room, he did everything I would have done.
We won 3-2.
He was a center-back, had never scored goals in his life; that day, he
scored two. Captain and leader are very different things. You can’t buy
leaders. You can’t manufacture leaders. And when you have them, your
team is one step ahead."
In 67 years he was the greatest centre half I have ever seen play for us….and I have seen some great ones. Deceptively fast but never looked rushed, simply because he knew all the short cuts. Cool and collected, tough as nails but could never be classed as a dirty player. Always intrigued me to see the way he tutored Jonathan Fortune and turned them into a formidable pairing for a while. I am certain if you asked Jonathan the best player he played alongside he would say it was “ The tank”. RIP…..Jorge…..RIP. 👋🏼👏🙁
The Fish Costa fortune era was where we peaked as a club. Was there for his debut and there for his last game. As others have mentioned, I always thought he would manage us one day. A very sad day. RIP.
The great story from Curbs shortly after Jorge's arrival. The boys were going out for a golf day and Curbs asked Jorge if he wanted to come along. 'Do you own any clubs Jorge' asked Curbs 'yes' came the reply. '.... One in Albufeira and one in Vilamoura'!
Shocked by this news. Apparently a heart attack at the training centre of his beloved Porto. A wonderful character and world class defender. Will always live on in my best ever Charlton 11.
Devastating news, one of the best players I’ve seen in a Charlton shirt. No doubt the club will hold a minute silence in memory of Jorge and young Ethan. Life is so precious. RIP the Tank
First, Terry Reid, now big Jorge. Bad day for legends! Fabulous centre back who did more in half a season than many of our other legends. He was immense in the final day draw at Old Trafford. RIP Jorge.
That's really hit me to be fair! He's only 5 years older than me
Unbelievable player and it was a privilege to see im play for us and to meet him. Such a calm, quiet and unassuming guy - completly different to the guy on the pitch
