CHARLTON SIGN NEW CEO - DANE MURPHY (p13. Oh no they don’t)
Comments
-
Time will tell how good a CEO he will be for us, but I think we can all agree this is a far cry from the likes of Katrien Meire being appointed or Sandgaard appointing himself despite an almost total lack of relevant previous experience. No new appointment comes with zero risk of failure but hiring someone with a CV like this does at least further point towards us being run as a serious concern again and not an experiment, scam, or hobby as the previous few regimes have treated us.17

coming to something when the CEO is looking younger than the players...3

The owners genuinely look like they know what they want and what they’re doing. It all looks to be very professional and not haphazard recruitment. We at long last look like a stable club with a strategy. Our promotion I think has come ahead of certainly my expectations and I really hope that the next stage of the owners plan include significant on field investment. Next season absolutely must end with us still a Championship club. I have a lot of faith in Jones but we’re definitely u against it. The names being mentioned as potential signings don’t at this point leap out at me as getting us to where we want to be so I’m really hoping there are some real quality signings to come. Anything less could mean all last seasons hard work are wasted.1

Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce that the club is set to appoint Dane Murphy as Chief Executive Officer.
Murphy will arrive with a proven track record of success, having played a key role in guiding Nottingham Forest to promotion to the Premier League, and previously overseeing Barnsley’s highest league finish in more than two decades.
The appointment is subject to the completion of the EFL Owners and Directors’ Test and the appropriate documentation.
Charlton Chairman Gavin Carter said: “Dane is an ambitious, dynamic, and forward-thinking leader with experience at the top level of the game. He understands what it takes to create a high-performance culture and deliver results. His work at Nottingham Forest and Barnsley demonstrated a clear ability to elevate clubs and drive them forward.
“We’re continuing to build a strong and united leadership team to match our ambitions for Charlton. With promotion to the Championship, Nathan Jones committing to a long-term future, and now Dane joining the club, we’re laying the foundations to take Charlton to the next level.”

Dane Murphy looks like a cross between a younger Simon Jordan and Simon Le Bon with Charlie Methven's trousers.

Promising hire, which makes a lot of sense particularly an American with an impressive Championship track record should really help bridge to the US ownership whats needed.
Key will be relationships with Jones and Chappell. Hope that’s all been considered and tested a little in the recruitment process, but if all pulling together that’s a good trio imo. It’s the move of a proper football club which has an actual plan in motion to move the club forward and succeed. Only time will tell on that and thanks to the basket case we’ve been the past decade plus, I keep waiting for the crazy drama to jump out from somewhere, but maybe that’s behind us for now.8 -

Some of the comments from Barnsley fans are encouraging. Is it known if he has he been working at all in the last 2 1/2 years? And if so what he’s been up to (apart from the part owner of Vitesse Arnham thing)2

Brighton's very successful transfer policy was based on an amazing scouting network (especially south America) and a significant investment in data analysis. Murphy will need to work very closely and collaboratively with PC and NJ. Based on his background it would seem Murphy's strengths are on the football side - maybe that's where he focuses and Warwick takes more of a COO role. Not sure where that leaves Jim Rodwell though!6 -

Can't see where Rodwell fits in with the Murphy appointment. Would expect he'll be on his way to find another club to be temporary CEO of during a takeover or something.1

His CV is good....But he is American.
Charlton and the U.S are two things that just don't go together. We are a proud small club.
Is he going to be sensitive and is he going to be a twitter addict public relations ego maniac.
"Hey ass-hole I've been watching soccer my whole life so stop being such a jackass"
"Oh my gaaad, this stadium isn't even full - whats going on here, and this weather sucks ass"
"What's that dudes name? Curb-ish-ley? But you guys call him curbs right?"9 -

Barsley were the ones that were taking a punt. Look where he was before he picked up that role.
He's earnt some stripes since then.
Good appointment1 -
I wasn't ranting and was not talking in a serious manner. I'm pleased that he comes across well.
All I was aware of is that he is American.
Americans and football don't usually go very well together but I guess on this occasion, that has proven to be an incorrect assumption4 -
The following is from one of the Barnsley fan forum sites. Poster would appear to be an employee and my highlighted parts would seem to bode well for how he works as a CEO.
“Dike was signed by Dane. As were Andersen, Collins, Oduor, Chaplin, Sollbauer, Helik, Kane, Britain, Kitching and Morris amongst many others. He appointed Struber and Ismaël. His ability to relate to and liaise with the first team yet also run the rest of the club (in trying times too) was commendable.
I can’t speak for you or others on his ability as a CEO. He was roundly given pelters for lots of his time in situ. Particularly early on. He isn’t one for cameras or publicity. We had to convince him of the merits of being seen, to let the fans see the Dane we saw every day. I think eventually supporters saw what we did.
For those who worked under him, he offered clarity, transparency, and a feeling of being a part of something special. To be fair, GG had already created a similar environment so it was a seamless transition. Dane didn’t bark orders, he didn’t have cliques. He trusted each department to do their jobs and people thrived under him. From bottom of the league, fighting to survive through a pandemic, to a best finish in 20 years.
It’s also no coincidence - to my mind - that he was at the helm of Forest when they went from bottom of the league to the top flight a year later or whatever.
With the connections he has, and a good manager in Jones, I’d expect that to confirm safety at least for Charlton.”
