  • Went last night and to the previous 2.... I'm absolutely loving it right now and the 324 mile round trip was more than worth it!.... Bring on Saturday! ;-)

  • I know some where mentioning us winning our first 6 games 2 years ago, but this team just feels different...in a good way

we still reached the playoffs winning first 6...

    So not that bad

I agree, this team feels a lot different and doesnt seem to have that "charlton curse" as of yet.
Gotta wait till latter part of season where we never win a game to see ;)
    Great feeling atm though! :)
  • Was at the game last night and also other 2 also. Still cant get over how well we are playing and loving every minute. Thought everyone played well and cant wait for saturday now. COYR

Went last night. What impressed me most was the fact that I didnt even feel Hollands and Stephens got into the game, yet we still managed to win by 2 goals and keep a clean sheet. I must admit I wasnt sure on Taylor but last night he and Morrison both proved they can be some pairing at this level!

Wright Phillips and Hayes look to have such a good understanding of each other, and just by BWPs constant running and tracking last night it is clear that he enjoys playing with Paul.

Waggy proved again with his work rate just how important he will be in our push for promotion over the course of the season, fantastic work rate as ever.

And the fans were bloody brilliant, the feel good factor is certainly back!

A long way to go but onwards and upwards!! COYR

  • Could someone please post a picture of the away end.
  • As I see it, we have to treat the remaining 43 games as 43 cup finals.

Obviously enjoying football, and like a lot of us, this season is re-igniting my love of the game.

But we need to be cautious. We have a tough game on Sat - and we need to make The Valley a cauldron and get behind the lads v Scunthorpe.
  • So glad I didn't miss that.

Looked a class above and seemed to play within ourselves as if wanting them to come at us so we could slap them back down.

The midfield 2 are awesome and the was they sprayed the ball about and went past players as if they weren't even there was beautiful to watch.
Thought S-Dog had a good game, Wiggins seems to rush it a little bit at times but was pretty solid. It makes a change to watch a Charlton where you don't have to be on the edge of your seat even at 2-0 up.

The only weakness I think we may have is if the opposition have a striker that is more likely to play with it on the floor, rather than the big lumps we saw last night. They brought on a striker last night that did exactly that and it did some to trouble us a little bit more. Saying that I couldn't fault the centre-backs, so I don't want to take the gloss off of what was a great performance.

    Roll-on Saturday!
  • We've had winning streaks in the past - what brought at least one of them to an end was that teams had worked out what our "plan A" was and we didn't have a "plan B". I've only seen one match, do people that have seen more think Powell and the team can cope? Do they have a "plan B"?
  • Green will get his chance at some stage - great to have quality that can't get in the team - the sort of 'headache' every manager wants.

  • One reason not to rush to judgement is that we have a massive series of 'it's grim up north' games to face this season. If we establish an effective rhythm to cope with those matches we can start to smile a bit.

And we still haven't seen Alonso.

Nice to read a post match thread on here where it's all pretty much positive, especially for 2 away tough away games on the bounce. And by the sunds of those who were there we could've easily scored 4 in each of them.

Nice to see Hayes getting good reviews again, thought he might be a good buy and he's proving it so far. Early days though but for the first time in ages I can see The Valley bouncing on Saturday (we'll lose 1 nil now...)
  • Was at the game.

A solid team effort with no one player looking particularly suspect. Even while Solly was made a target by Colchester, he dealt with it reasonably well, and the centre-backs were always there to mop up/cover for him. Wiggins kept Antonio under wraps; Robbie did what he had to do well. His catching and kicking is vastly improved. As a unit the defence is still having one or two teething problems - one moment where both Taylor and Solly went for a free header - but the communication will come with time.

The midfield is class, Stephens in particular. I'll forecast he'll have a couple of below-par/bad games this season where all he tries doesn't come off and he looks like a glamorous waste of space, but not so far! He's a delight on the ball, while Hollands is somewhat the opposite, combative and lays off the simple ball to the more creative Stephens/a winger or whoever. Speaking of our wide men, Jackson isn't exactly an out-and-out winger but provides more further down the pitch. Wagstaff is direct and pacy - good. He also looks spurred on by the looming Green.

Up front, Hayes is a quality player of the sort we haven't seen for a while (a la Paolo di Canio, but obviously not THAT good). He is the sort of deep-lying forward that is perfect for BWP to poach from. And in BWP, we have probably one of the most predatory strikers in the league. As a whole, the players seem to complement each other, and forgive me for quoting Aristotle, but in our case the whole is most certainly greater than the sum of its parts.

Promising - and hopefully the team is still to gel, though it'll be interesting to see how we react to going a goal down; a sending-off; injuries to certain players etc etc.

  • Hi wasn't at the game, but the great thing is the goals seem to be coming from many sources so far and its pretty tight at the back.  Don't want to appear too negative but over the years I have seen quite a few good starts full of expectation only to fall away to nothing or quite often a frantic scramble - better to be a tortoise than a hare, but I will agree the top is a good place to be.
  • Danny Baker once said that typically Charlton go up like a rocket, down like a stick.
  • Evina,Alonso,Green,Euell,Benson,Hughes and Hamer still to fight it out for a place in the team. Nice.

Well it was interesting that for example when he brought Green on, it wasnt a straight swap for Waggy, seems that Waggy moved into the role behind the most forward striker ( Euell by that time?). And Waggy on form in that role would terrify most centrebacks in this division.

Seth mate, do we care what a celebrity Spanner glory boy says? Danny Baker can be funny sometimes but football analyst he ain't.

  • I though this last night and this year I think we will have plan A, B and C.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

We are yet to see Green, Alonso, Evina start yet and feel we have players to adapt. Also we look a more balanced side this year with a deadly forward pair.

People may have worked <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Brighton out last year put if the players are good enough they will adapt and overcome other team’s game plans.

  • So out of 5000 you loyal boys and girls helped make up 1550  of the crowd, I make that 30% of the crowd made up by Addicks

difference is the last few years although good starts, results wise, we never played good football and were somewhat fortunate to win the early games and we were all hoping that the good football and so called 'gelling' would happen, it never did and then the results also soured. This yr we look comfortable on the ball and have a genuine desire to win it back and then find space.
  • When your plan A is having better players than your opponents accross the park it can be quite hard to counter!
  • At division one level the trick is to have players who can cope efficiently with Plan A. Not many teams can count on that completely let alone have a working plan B and C. A handful of teams are going to be able to have enough players good enough for changing things around and those will be the top teams. From what I have seen so far we have brought in players good enough to be coached to play several shapes. Things are looking promising.
  • Well pleased with that. I know we're only three games in but it seems like the team is generating a buzz about themselves. Sounds like they're bursting with confidence and won't take a loss lying down.

Anyone see how Elliot picked up that yellow card?
wasting time I think. he got some stick from the home crowd.

impressed with Solly and Wiggins link up play. Also felt very confident going forward, some great balls for BWP to run on to. Always felt we would score. really wanted Euell to score near the end, although was fearful of another head lock.

  • Loving it while it lasts and see no reason at present to find a negative. Looking forward to the games which hasnt happened for a good few years.

    Enjoy ----- FFS  enjoy.

Took the words out of my mouth.

Reading John Ward's comments I get the impression that teams are going to find it difficult to defend against us. Across the midfield we have four players who can and like to attack and all have an eye for goal. Then opposing defenders only have to wiorry about Hayes and BWP. I can see a lot of teams playing 4-5-1 and packing the defence to stifle us.

  • I don't know whether to be annoyed or pleased that John Ward thinks we've got millions and are "buying" promotion.

Pleased - maybe I'm reading something into it, but that comment gave me the impression that he thinks we are going to be one of the teams to beat this season. If your opponents fear you and think that they aren't going to get much out of the match then the game is half won.
  • Wasn't there so general points only.

Colchester are likely to be top half so an excellent away win to go with the Notts County result.

I'm not getting carried away until I see how we do on the proverbial wet November Tuesday night in Hartlepool type fixture but so far so good.

Let's hope we keep it going at The Valley on saturday against another probable top half side, Scunthorpe.

  • Powell seems to be taking the same approach on the park as did Poyet with Brighton last season.
