Can I just ask why all the media is so focused on Hackney in the aftermath, when there is major unrest in Lewisham, Peckham and the rest of SE London right now? Is south of the river not trendy enough?

I haven't read a lot of this thread but will give my pennys worth.
The way I see it is pretty simple. These young people on the street all know that the punishment isn't harsh enough to worry about. Prison is like a holiday camp for lots of people. For some I'm sure the prison system serves well but these out on the street now looting and setting buildings on fire just aren't scared of serving time.
When I hear people start blaming the cuts in Youth etc it really gets my goat. Are you seriously telling me that these youths in Hackney, Lewisham and Peckham would have been at Youth Club tonight instead of looting and casuing mayhem?! I feel sorry for people who are that niaeve. Yes, no doubt that times are tough in the UK for young people but a lot of these "yoofs" on the street probably have no interest in getting a job, just signing on down the job centre for a tasty £45 a week plus extras if they have a few kids. I know that its a minority, but the point is that it only takes a SMALL minority to cause a BIG problem.
Finally, why aren't the police doing anything about this? IMO I think the best way to stop this is by making an example of them. Go in hard and tough, use all means necessary to stop them and arrest each and every one of them against the wall like a prisoner of war camp! Put them in the back of a meat wagon and stick them in a cell until they can be charged. That will certainly shake a few feathers and maybe others will think twice about going out tomorrow night and doing the same thing. If I went out on a saturday night a bit drunk and told a police officer to f**k off I would be jumped on by 12 of them, stuck up against a car in a painful arm lock and shoved in the back of a car (not speaking from experience, honest)

People are being dragged out of cars, cars are crashed into each other and abandoned, shops are being annihilated and there are gangs of feral youths roaming the streets outside my house as I type. And no - this is NOT a joke about it being a 'normal' night in Croydon - I'm deadly serious. The whole of London Road from my road up to West Croydon has been closed off, and the gavvers look like they're trying to protect Croydon town centre from being done over.

To state the obvious, this situation could go on for weeks on end. There are a lot of shopping centres still to plunder, a lot of potential looters looking for fun, games and freebies, irrespective of their social or racial background and not too many cops to go round. Hide and seek, guerilla games, taunt the man. Let's hope that good will and a sense of proportion is allowed to take hold where lust and violent avarice presently hold sway

Rockbottom (music shop in London Road) has been done. Saw gangs of arsewipes strolling down London Road with guitars, drums and anything else they could carry. That'll be them f***ed completely and they'll never reopen - insurance won't pay out because it'll be considered force majeure, and they've been struggling to keep their heads above water for a couple of years now.

I don't think that consider prison a soft option - those that do simply aren't aware of the realities of life inside. It's not the cushy life that some of the tabloids like to pretend it is.
Some interesting points - on the way home I was pondering why people riot, the Scarman report after the 1981 riots pretty much rubbished the concept that they were all criminals intent on rampaging and pillaging, although I think that's a factor. Then the riots were a reaction to over-zealous policing combined with urban deprivation and a lack of economic opportunity. Those that look at Brixton now don't realise what a shit-heap it was in the 70s and 80s.
For some time the direction of the nation has been concerning me - we want young people to work hard at school, get an education and get jobs and a career, but where are the jobs and career opportunities? We don't make anything in this country anymore, everything (well mostly) is imported because it's cheaper and more cost effective, great but short-sighted and we paper over the problem of a lack of employment. Meanwhile there's a burgeoning under-class of ill educated people with few meaningful prospects in life. They can go on the dole and get benefits but we aren't solving the problem, just postponing dealing with it.
Then something like this kicks off and yes, there are some who are having the time of their misbegotten lives, but we need to understand the anger behind these people, I don't think it's just about stealing a few PS3s and flat screen televisions. This is perhaps their way of lashing out against the system. London as we all know is horrendously expensive and that's when you have money. What's it like for people with no money and few chances?
For too long governments of all shapes and sizes have taken the easy route out and chucked money around to hope the problem goes away.
