A change in formation needed?

I have thought for a while (even when we were winning) that a change in formation is needed, to make us more secure at the back, whilst having enough flexibility to play attacking football. If I was Powell, I would try the following, in the attempt to sure up the defence as well as having a system where playing high tempo passing football will help us.
defence as well as having a system where playing high tempo passing football will help us.

Elliot
Francis Doc Daily Fry/bessone

Semedo McCormack/Jackson (depending on fitness)

Eccleston Racon Waggy/Reid

BWP

I have no idea if it will look right when it gets posted, but I think with this the two holding midfielders can cover the defence and allowing the other 4 more attacking players to get forward and have some freedom without the need to worry to much about making bad passes in the final third (i.e trying a creative pass that goes wrong)

When defeding, the system can go back to a 4-5-1 style to give us some extra protection.

Thoughts?

Racon is not an attacking player. Gumbo last night nicknamed him "left foot-right foot" because that's all he does. Shifts from one foot to another, turns around, falls over.

Of course, but who else could we play in that posistion? Perhaps Wagstaff? Ideally, a new creative attack minded player will come and play that posistion :P
  • It's a change of players we need not formation. Players can adapt to formations if they are any good. All the top teams change formations to suit a game. I think there is to much issue on here about formations, the players we have as a group lack spirit, fight and talent.

As I said in the post match thread, direct football in a 4-4-2 if we want to make the play-offs.

Experiment with some form of 4-3-3 if we're planning for next season. Will probably have to wait until the summer for a few players to really make it work though.

Think CP has been a bit naive playing these 4-3-3 formations, we don't have the players to do it and the next t leaves a slow defence exposed. starting Reid, Eccleston, Waggy and Bwp left us really lightweight last night

We do not need a change of formation just a change of personnel.

4-4-2 with players in their correct positions. It's very Sven Goran Eriksson playing people out of position....

    4-4-2 of:

    Elliot

    Jenkinson
    Dailly
    Llera
    Fry

    Wagstaff
    Racon
    Semedo
    Jackson

    BWP
    Eccleston

    My formation would be 2-8-0-1

    Elliott
    Worner
    Francis
    Jenkinson
    Doc
    Dailly
    Fortune
    Fry
    Bessone
    Semedo

Only direct football will get us in the Play-offs ?. Just look at Poyet's Brighton. Let's try a little imagination for christsake.

I don't think we have the players to play like Brighton.

I'd love us to play like them or Huddersfield or Southampton.

I wouldn't have thought Russell Slade's Brighton team could play like Gus Poyet's Brighton team, but they managed it.

After over half a season to work with the squad and make several signings both the January transfer window and later in the summer.

Poyet didn't get them playing they are after 8 games.

This season we might see an improvement with a couple of good loans, but like Brighton, big changes can't happen until Powell's at least had a pre-season to sort out the squad.

Unfortunately Powell is so ingrained in 4-4-2 I can't see him being able to coach the team to play a more fluid system. I hope i'm wrong.
