Before I came to live in London I didnt really believe the North of the river / South of the river two cities thing. It wasnt until I started to go to the Valley that it became evident that their was a huge difference in mentality. I find that here in North London, there are less academics...of the friends I have here only one went to college, and most of the others didnt even finish school, so I couldnt really see a thread on colleges attended lasting long on the Tottenham forum. The biggest difference is I find more of a community feel here, even with its many creeds and cultures...my husband says and feels the same and although born and lived in Greenwich for 32 years would never want to live south again. Lastly, and this maybe just a Charlton thing...at my first Charlton match I was shocked to see how many overweight people there were...I really dont see this level of obesity in North London so maybe diet and fitness are also factors that divide.

I'm not a Londoner so no axe to grind...but as for speech, I do have trouble understanding the South London drawl...Bermondsey, Peckham being some of the worse.
Absolutely agree, thats why I'm moving...but still cant fault the community spirit.
Thats because North London doesnt have the parkland like the south...air is definately dirtier and smellier here...sometimes so bad that I cant face going out...so there you go, another huge difference.
You have to be a Londoner to fully understand the north/south divide. It’s an innate, instinctive sense of right or wrong, heaven or hell. North and south London are just…….different. When I sounded people out about the differences I was told “it feels different”, “they speak funny”, “they're backwards”, and “it’s just not right”.
By the way, I'm from South London and my wife lived in North London until we got married ... and now says she would never go back.
However, it’s not the interesting names for their children, or the self-obsession – all those diets, all that idiot yoga, the tantric sex – but the self-righteous hypocrisy of rich north Londoners that is truly unbearable. They want to save the world but still send their children to public school. They claim to be true metropolitans yet cluster in exclusive villages.
This isn’t urban life, it’s a cod bucolic nightmare populated by rampaging egotists who, understandably, would be beaten about the head with yellow murder boards if they ever strayed south of City Hall. This is north London, and it sucks.
the rest is irrelevant.
i would move home tomorrow but i think i would miss nth london it is by far grittier and edgy
And it makes you repeat yourself!
However i feel North London has a better selection of local restaurants and more interesting socialising areas. Mostly because there are bigger settled cultural communities in the North. The south is pretty much just Black and white.
In general the difference was that the south london councils seemed friendlier but a bit less organised. North of the river (tower hamlets excepted which was a very strange set of offices) North was stroppy, busy and dirtier, but you didn't have to wait as long for the information.
This, I realise, helps not a jot but was definitely what I observerved.
windscreen,
Why bring up the overweight thing? Are you some health expert?
Glad you like the feel the community spirit here! What is wrong with the South?
Your right. I'm moving soon. We looked at a couple of houses on the east side, nah, I'm west side boy.
Now moving to Locks Bottom.
As for the London divide, I don't feel safe at night in the fast majority of East London but feel very safe (estates excluded) in South London, a guy a work from Essex is the complete opposite.

Oh and it smells. Not as much as France, but about the same as Holland.
