Getting served in a crowded bar on a weekend down the OKR was a right of passage ..a bit like passing exams, driving test getting to 9th base etc
The Lilliput Hall was a bit clicky the first time we went in there.
Waited about 15 minutes to get served and the the place was empty.

Being 5 foot 2 is a sure way to not get served.

Do what I do, wear trainers with deeper soles.

All joking aside I really don’t understand the dislike by some towards Wetherspoons.

They have a successful business model and are popular. Likewise doing more than most to keep the high street alive.

(More) affordable beer than many other pubs.

Are they really any worse than a longstanding local pub that makes newbies feel unwelcome because they aren’t regulars?

Their app is excellent and makes ordering very easy.

Please enter Spoons snob extraordinaire @Radostanradical
Nothing wrong with spoons per se just its clientle and food.

Eithrr single parents with 7 kids all called some derivative of kenzie or brexit voters complaining about the country.

Well we all know what 4th is, so 9th must be quite a bit further...

Funny enough many years ago I was on work trip and the closest place that served a semi edible breakfast was a spoons. I would go in there and see people having pints at 8am, it turns out a lot of people who work night shifts will drink in there. There was also a piss head who would drink 2 bottles of wine every morning.

Had this ridiculous scenario in the new barrack tavern before the Wednesday game last season. A proper boozer! Not a spoons! I asked an old boy about it while queuing and he was like "its jus how we do it now". Some geezer cut the line and my man said "mind you, you always get a few dickheads". Made me chuckle...

I never envy bar staff who have to decide who to serve next.
Many moons ago, I was in NY and watching WC qualifier games in Nevada Smith’s bar in Manhattan.
It was absolutely mobbed. The bar was run by a team of 4/5 Irish guys.
They somehow managed to not only keep track of who was next but even remembered when it was their turn to buy the drink for the punter (was something like buy 3 then they buy 1).
They were incredible and shows what can be done with smart, motivated bat staff.
The difference is that bar work can be a proper, well paid (with tips) career in some places whereas in the UK this is hardly ever the case.
I was in a bar near Times Square a couple of years back and the owner told me that (with tips) they had some bar staff earning $80-100k a year.
I'd be pissed off if wages and tips came to $80pa.  I'd prefer to be at the $100k end of that scale.

I have two issues with Wetherspoons.  The main guy is a bit of a dick.  Far too often, the smell of food is all-pervading.

Sometimes the carpets can be very sticky, but I've never found one as bad as Pontins Camber Sands.

There's often a queue at the RAH but that's because the bar is only two people wide.  No one minds and no one's ever a dick about it.

One of THE best boozers on the football circuit.  I always go in there with my Wednesday mates, we use the front snug.
Over the years I have got on speaking terms with the landlord and his beloved.  After the midweek game at Hillsborough in 2020 I asked the landlady what time do you close, she replied back with whatever time you want :)Last orders were called at midnight.
Kelham Island is fantastic for a crawl as well.

First time I ever witnessed this was in the now closed Wetherspoons at Forest Hill.

A member of the bar staff and a door man were actually telling people not to do it, but it carried on.

Got a few comments when I walked up to the bar and ignored the queue, said door man politely pointed out that he had told me/them not to queue and eventually people listened.

Dick waving rite of passage or not I have always dislike bar scrum melee, and would prefer some kind of accepted queuing system.
Looks like I am in a tiny minority again.

Talking of scrum. I was in the Railway at Blackheath waiting to get served when I felt a presence behind me.
I turned round and saw man mountain Mickey Skinner behind me.
Luckily for him he didn't try to push in, must've known i could've taken him 😬

I think the logic of a queue is sound in the absence of good bar staff who are scanning the room and have a good idea of who is next. If they know then the clientale don’t need ‘to push in’ and will wait their turn.

But I think it’s more to do with layout / design. A queue that snakes in to the seating / standing area is far from ideal. Horses for courses I guess.

    Horses for bars

Its why they are so long, nothing dick wavy about it. If bar staff lose that skill of clocking who is next and it is an imperfect science then we can sack another tranche of skilled service sector employees and skip straight to queuing for a vending machine for a can of fizzy shit. Isn't like the economy matters or anything or pubs are anything more than slosh houses as opposed to key community hubs where human interaction is vital to the whole thing

I know its not your view either @valleynick66

I’ve noticed loads of it going on this year at work, mostly young English.

    One example:

    “1 mojito please”.

I go and make it which maybe takes one minute.
I then charge the girl and then ask the person next to her what she’d like.

    “1 mojito please”….

I then realise they’re a big group all together and I asked them “please could you let me know what you’re all having so I can make them quicker for you”

    …………….

    ”9 mojitos please”

    😳

I don’t mind that so much, or more that I’m getting used to it.

Easier to stick 2 card machines infront of 9 people and go down the line rather than making 1 drink at a time and then charging, especially cocktails.

That said, had a group of nice lads probably about 19/20 that I educated after day 3 of their holiday to do rounds though… it was revolutionary to them!

In fairness, i do understand if you’re from that Covid generation and this is your first time going on a lads/girls holiday or going out for World Cup games that you might not “get it”.

...and then as you give them their Mojitos,"and 5 guinness please"

The solution then is obvious… VAR.
