Club statement
By Sheffield Wednesday FC
The EFL have issued the following statement on Monday afternoon and the club will make no further comment at this time.
--
“Following earlier media reports, the EFL can confirm that Sheffield Wednesday FC are to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL Regulations relating to payment obligations, with Mr Dejphon Chansiri prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL Club for a period of three years.
“While matters remain ongoing in respect of the issues being considered by the independent Club Financial Reporting Unit, for alleged breaches in the 2025/26 season prior to the Club entering administration, the League can confirm that it is not seeking any further points deductions from the Club. A full statement will be issued once these matters have been formally concluded.
“Separately, the EFL and Sheffield Wednesday remain in discussions regarding its appeal against the fee restriction, which is currently set to run until the end of the winter 2027 transfer window. This is likely to be resolved as part of the Club’s exit from administration
“No further comment will be made at this time.”

Rolling over of deductions only applies late in the season. At this stage it just reduces their chance of staying up from near-zero to very-near-zero.Athletico Charlton said:27 from safety.
Do the deductions roll to next season if they would have gone down without them anyway or does that only happen it they are applied late in a season.
Wednesday will not be losing any sleep over this deduction, they will know they were doomed before anyway.

And what about Leicester3
-
One can't help feeling that the six-point deduction for late payment of players and staff wouldn't have happened if Chef Wendy hadn't already gone into administration and thus copped a 12-point penalty.
The Football League would have deliberated and stalled and waited until:
- Wendy was completely safe and could afford losing six points this season;
- Wendy was definitely going down so could apply the penalty this season leaving them with a clean start next season; or
- if survival went down to the wire and the six points would send them down, "make a decision" so late in the day that it couldn't possibly be applied retrospectively to this season and therefore carry it over to next year.
Cynical, moi?6 -
Just need to make up some charges for Pompey and Oxford now and we're home17

Surely having a 3 sided ground should incur a deduction of some kind, would get Wrexham tooGarrymanilow said:Just need to make up some charges for Pompey and Oxford now and we're home14 -
Good idea... Cant have Portsmouth relegated, when we need the guaranteed points at Fratton Park each year.fenaddick said:

Then hit Wrexham with a "foreigners" tax of, say, 12 points and we should be OK.fenaddick said:

Expect them to drop, get the reprieve from the ban on transfer fees, then have their new owner and a full stadium roaring on a squad of players way better paid than the rest of League 1 a la Birmingham, and act like nothing ever happened8

Club statement today saying that the transfer embargo will be lifted in January so new owners can invest in players. EFL are gutless!2
-
No Sheff Wednesday statement today. Embargo was always going to be lifted anyway, that’s part of the deal when the owner moves on (or gets moved on). The fee restriction is what matters, I’m sure they’ll wriggle out of it thoughCharltonManor1966 said:Club statement today saying that the transfer embargo will be lifted in January so new owners can invest in players. Thats mainly just a report on the EFL statement. Bit of speculation about the fee restriction is new but I doubt a new owner will be in much before the end of January anywayCharltonManor1966 said:0 -
Hate to say it but I think lifting the fee restriction is probably the right decision, as long as there is some sort of wage cap - ie, they cant sign Ronaldo & pay him £1m a week.
It doesn't matter who they sign they wont stay up this season and also what players will want to go there knowing that they will be in League 1 next season.1 -
Agreed but as it says they will now be able to buy in the summer window to escape from L1. The original fee embargo went through the summer window which would have made it far more difficult to escape L1 in one season. Will now be like Birmingham and Wrexham all over again......2

Why? The fee restriction is a punishment for breaking the rules, so what has changed to make lifting it the right decision?golfaddick said:Hate to say it but I think lifting the fee restriction is probably the right decision, as long as there is some sort of wage cap - ie, they cant sign Ronaldo & pay him £1m a week.

Seems fair enough to me.0 -
So this must surely set a precedent for all future EFL administration 'PUNISHMENTS'? What is the point of the punishment in the first place if it can just be rescinded because its Chef Wendy.Covered End said:

As someone who generally bets on a pre season accumulator I love it when teams like Wednesday go down having just been bought.
Likely to be something 1/3 for top 6, 1/2 for promotion and 3/1 to win L1 next season is my guess. Like printing money including them in an accy.

Really? You can break the rules and then have all your punishments wiped away if you get a new owner?Covered End said:

Well the new owner (whoever he is) didn't break any rules so it's not exactly fair to keep restrictions in place. Personally I would class certain relegation as punishment enough.SomervilleAddick said:

One thing i would say though is that i do feel the punishments should still apply for the full season in which they were given, so i think it's silly if they're lifted immediately in January.3 -
There has to be incentives to encourage new owners to step forward and pump money into clubs to prop up the inter-dependent football financial pyramid, of which Charlton is fully integrated into, otherwise sooner or later one of those domino clubs will take down a lot of others with it. The points deduction is sufficient.Chris_from_Sidcup said:

I think I’m ok with the fee restriction being lifted because of the admin. If it was Chansiri straight to a new owner then I’d want it to stay in place. Might sound a bit odd but the fee restriction lowers the value of the club to a buyer which is an extra punishment to the bad owner1

Statement from the independent Club Financial Reporting Unit: Sheffield Wednesday FC
A statement on behalf of the independent Club Financial Reporting Unit (CFRU)
The independent Club Financial Review Panel (CFRP) has published its decision in relation to breaches of payment regulations in 2025/26 by Sheffield Wednesday FC, which now confirms that no further sporting sanctions should be applied.
The decision (published in full here) was reached following consideration of a recommendation by the CFRU and the recent conclusion of separate Independent Disciplinary Commission proceedings, initiated by the EFL, where the Club was deducted six points for financial breaches and an additional 12 points for entering administration in October 2025.
The Panel opted to accept the recommendation put forward by the CFRU - supported by both the Club and EFL - on the basis that all breaches in both 2024/25 and 2025/26 are as a result of a lack of financial resources being made available by Mr Chansiri.
This has led to the subsequent sporting sanctions that have already taken effect in the 2025/26 Championship table.
It therefore agreed that any further immediate points deduction would be unjust. Consideration was given to imposing additional sanctions, however they were of the view that such an action may deter potential bidder(s) from entering the process and delay the Club’s exit from Administration, which provides an opportunity for new ownership to take control, rebuild the Club and provide a positive future for all those associated with Sheffield Wednesday FC.

I don't mind what they've done as I do believe a 18 point deduction will see SW relegated.Briston_Addick said:This independent report has been brought to you in association with Cadbury's FUDGE.
However
No mention of the transfer embargo or spend cap. I those are lifted & a new owner can spend millions on players & wages then that wouldn't be right0 -
but if that then means that they are more competitive and start taking points off our other relegation rivals, as long as they themselves are still relegated and we end up safe - surely that would be great for us?golfaddick said:
