If we had these kids on contract, we couldn't stop them being poached but might circumvent the ridiculous EPPP compensation rules.Even at 17 there is a risk because most contracts signed by minors (under 18) are voidable by the minor and only enforceable when they reach 18 - they can just walk away - which is why most professional football contracts are signed at 18.It is contract law rather than employment law but it does apply to Contracts of Employment.Moreover, any employment contract signed at 16 or 17 must involve a significant element of structured training e.g. an apprenticeship.The compensation rules are actually a bonus rather than ridiculous.1

Pretty sure at 15 you can sign a pre contract that kicks in on your 17th birthday, I think Arsenal have done that with Dowman. That isn’t a feasible model for us though as we couldn’t afford to do it with enough of the squad0

It happens with very young players as well. My friend's grandson is eleven and plays for Ipswich. He played a few games for Charlton, who wanted him on their books, but Ipswich was a better location for him.
Apparently Charlton are still sniffing around and offering incentives for him to move. I don't think it'll happen but it demonstrates how promising kids are spotted and tapped up from a very young age.1 -
It’s because they are still in full time education if you’re 15 you’re naive, sign a 3 year deal on professional terms you’re likely to think schooling is absolutely useless throw it in the bin then next year 3 years they suffer a horrific ACL injury can’t play to the same standard of football, and suddenly have nothing to fall back on, think it’s to offer some sort of protection if they don’t make it professionally. I personally think it’s a good thing to keep young players humbled and not give them everything at that age but the rules about poaching academy prospects need to be re-evaluatedGisappointed said:Why is there a 17 age limit on signing a contract? Agreed but PL clubs can afford to give a % away to reset progression as a bet, realistically if we do it that player has to be already pushing for the first team alreadyScoham said:
