I’m loving how most clubs  state how bad they were on the day / how awful we are, and then we get a positive result, we are so lucky every team almost has an off day against us. I just can’t fathom what the common denominator is. I’ve been saying we are better than people think. The club has an all round feel like the curbs days us proving people wrong. I love it!!
    Embarrassment.

Tinged with hints of delusion and denial.
  • Last year they were in The Premier League and the two before that they won promotion. They’ve wrongly assumed that this season in The Championship was going to be if not a cake walk then straightforward enough to be right up there. They lost a few players and spent a lot of money. They have a great squad on paper but as we know we don’t play on paper. A squad of talented individuals but not a team. It was obvious from last night that it’s less than the sum of its parts. On the other hand we are the complete opposite. Jones is a talented coach at getting things together. We’re greater than the sum of our teams parts and together as a squad, team and fan base. We’ll see a lot of comments akin to those of Ipswich this season.

I watched a big chunk of that last night after I got in from the match.

Unbelievable. the first two fellas look like they're going to cry any minute. Life must've been so tough being an Ipswich fan these past few years.

It's only when the third bloke joins halfway through that we get given any credit at all. Well, he says "I assume you've already given credit to Charlton", and the first two just look sheepish because they've barely mentioned us, other than commenting how we don't have any quality in our side and that our "best player" (TC) was on the bench.  Brilliant.

Well worth a watch if you have a spare hour or so!

Ipswich were poor second half because we made them look poor.

Ipswich bought their way out of L1, went up again and have parachute money. We have spent less to try and stay in the championship than they spent to get out of L1.

of course we won’t finish above them. The fact that their fans are even discussing it shows how far we have come
As is the theme for all our victories. Opposition fans will always think we caught them on an off day because they don't see us enough to realise that we specialise in creating off days
A good example is how we close down/block so effectively in and around the penalty area so oppo is reduced to speculative long range shots like last night.

Fascinating seeing how badly they've turned on McKenna. A manager who got them consecutive promotions up to the Premier League, their first season back there since 01/02, is now 'tactically clueless'. It was always going to be a tough season for them; they didn't spend enough to survive because they couldn't possibly so instead they built the kind of team that they felt could be a force in the Championship the next season. The problem is those exciting players they wanted to develop for the future got pummelled for an entire year, won 4 league games all season and got -46 goal difference. It's the same with Southampton this season and Luton the season before, losing can become a habit and the confidence you lose getting pumped 6-0 by City and conceding 4 or more goals 9 times across the season is hard to overturn.

They're 13th, 5 points off the Playoffs with a game in hand over most of the teams above them. They've got to recover from a really tough season and they're not even doing that badly, it's shocking how quickly the manager who was courted by Man Utd and Chelsea a year ago apparently now has absolutely no idea how to manage a team and no clue on how to set up a team tactically. Funny old game
Completely agree. And vice versa. Teams that are promoted have found a system that works with their players to win games. If promoted teams can keep that core and add to it in the right places, like we have, then they can do alright.
  • Not other forums but i've seen quite a few positive comments about us on facebook and twitter. That was definitely a result that has made other teams sit up and take notice of us.

Had a read from FT onwards and they really don't think we're very good which is odd. I didn't watch but the stats and highlights make it look like we were on a relatively even footing creatively

We stayed in Hull and went to get fish and chips after the game.

First time in my life I actually heard someone order a bag of scraps.  Plus a few orders of the Hull delicacy, Pattie bites - deep fried mashed potato.

It’s because the majority of football fans can’t comprehend the idea a team can be good if they don’t play possession based intricate passing attacking football. We’ve played 12 games this season sit 6th yet Bristol City and Leicester the only fanbases to have given us any sort of credit for our performance most people just blame there own teams for apparently being poorer than a bad team

Fans of every team we that we have taken points off this say we are poor. Which then begs the question of how shit must they be if we have taken points off them?

Yes mate, losing to Charlton Athletic is, quite literally, the level you are at. Get over it.

Is that genuinely a weird bloke sitting on his todd bitching about the game for two hours with no sound from the game or anything? In the two or three minutes I watched there’d be a long silence, then he’d have a conversation with someone, but all the viewer can hear is his part of the conversation!
Who on earth would sit and watch that? I can’t think of anything more irritating or boring.

I do kind of get why other teams' fans talk about us like this. We keep it tight, don't create much and then either score and hold on to a lead or score in the last seconds. They don't watch us every week though so as far as they're concerned we just turned up, played without much creativity and stole a win. It's not an accident though, it's what we play for and try and do every week, and we're very good at doing it. I think as the season goes on if we keep being up there fans will start to recognise that we didn't just beat them accidentally, we outplayed them using our setup like we have a lot of other teams. Or maybe they won't, I don't really care

All this has resonance with the famous Gary Player quote ‘the more I practice the luckier I get’.
Right now, for good or ill, Charlton Athletic has a definite definable identity. It is called winning points in the Championship.

The thing is the way we go about things is unfashionable and we aren’t supposed to win this way, and it gets on other clubs tits. Long may it continue 😂

I think most other fans expected Birmingham and Wrexham to be real threats so of the promoted clubs we were the ones to give easy points. They probably expected us to try and keep it tight but none expected us to be successful at it.

Absolutely. West Brom fans have joined the long line of oppo supporters bitching about how shit their team played but Charlton, despite getting a result, looked just as bad.
I expect plenty more salty comments like “Imagine having to watch them every week” and “Boring hoofball” and “Look at the possession stats!” and “Nathan Jones is annoying” or whatever, but I’m not really bothered about any of that. I don’t think we’ll win any awards for gorgeous flowing football, but NJ has the club looking at getting results. That’s all we need to worry about and the team is doing a great job so far.
    Fuck ‘em
