POST-MATCH THREAD: Hull City v Charlton Athletic: Saturday 25th October 2025: KO 15:00
A few changes today saw Miles Leaburn and Tyreece Campbell starting up front, with Rob Apter replacing James Bree and Harvey Knibbs taking the place of the usually ever-present Conor Coventry. That meant Sonny Carey was in a deeper position than usual, perhaps with the view that he’d better be able to knit together defense and attack. Changes were probably to be expected given the difficult fixtures preceding this match but who knows how the changes will affect the team?
The Addicks started brightly, dominating the first five minutes. Tyreece Campbell had two decent efforts right off the bat, forcing one save from Pandur, the Hull keeper, and a near miss with his left foot at a tight angle. Miles Leaburn ‘s physicality seemed to be giving the home side’s defenders a lot to think about as well as he harassed and harried them into mistakes.
Over the next ten minutes the home side came back into it a bit, mostly through a series of corners that put the visitors under pressure.
By 30 minutes Charlton were playing some tidy football in the Hull half. The changes made us more dangerous in attack at the expense of a bit of defensive rigidity. It was a case of which side would break through first. But, largely, this wasn’t football for the purists; misplaced passes, players caught flat footed, over hit crosses. It was end to end and scrappy.
Just before the half ended a horrible hip check on Harvey Knibbs put their man Hughes in the book. Knibbs received treatment and Kaminsky floated the free kick into the box but it was easily dealt with. Hull had a chance shortly after that they should have done better with but half eventually fluttered out with a goal.
But it wasn’t long before the deadlock was broken. Unfortunately, a minute or so in, Macauley Gillesphey was caught on the ball, just outside the box, dispossessed and the resulting shot from Joe Gelhardt was tucked past Kaminsky to put the home side ahead. It was a particularly galling, goal to concede, self-inflicted as it was.
The goal seemed to suck the life out of Charlton a bit. It was now a matter of whether the visitors could overcome being a goal down to get themselves back in it. Changes were made on 53 minutes, with Conor Coventry coming in for Harvey Knibbs and Rob Apter, who was not happy, making way for James Bree.
On 62 minutes Campbell was on the end of a Conor Coventry cross, his header spinning just wide. Hull concede goals at home and Charlton looked dangerous at times. Former Addick Liam Millar came on after 68 minutes (he went off ten minutes later with a hamstring issue) and, shortly after, Greg Docherty was replaced by Luke Berry and Macauley Gillesphey was replaced by Charlie Kelman. Could this be a case of cometh the hour, cometh the man?
Well the next man to cometh, was Addicks debutant, Onel Hernandez, replacing Sonny Carey.
The Addicks didn’t look like scoring, it had all gone a bit flat. That was until Luke Berry got his chest on the end of a James Bree corner from the left on 90 minutes and scored. There were five additional minutes and it looked like Charlton could rescue this and escape with a point. The home fans were audibly gutted. Hull piled on a bit of pressure through to the final whistle but they didn’t have enough to beat us.
The Addicks were absolutely knackered after this and the week they’d had. To rescue a point when none seemed more likely is a hell of a result. I’d imagine Nathan Jones will feel pretty good by the end of it, even though the mistake that gifted Hull a goal will grate. Seven points from three games, two of which were away, is a tremendous haul.
Hull City 1 Charlton 1
Over to you.

It’s been a punishing schedule recently and we were obviously both physically and mentally drained for much of that game. So all credit to the boys for digging in and getting a battling point.
That’s 7 points out of 9 this week which is a brilliant return. This bunch really don’t ever give up. Love it.

A draw that feels like a win.
Well done Charlton.
7 points out of 9 this week, great stuff.29 -
Loved that effort from a clearly struggling side
We're a bit screwed if Coventry is ever actually injured btw16 -
Having the bench options we have this season is such a big asset.23

Dogged dogshit performance but we hung in there and got the snatch and grab thanks to the marvelous chest of berry, love this club now rest up and proper go at Swansea back at the valley.6

No battleship.gif today I'm afraid lads... @ForeverAddickted doesnt reward mediocrity.
On a serious note happy with the draw, cant complain about seven points from the last week. Suspect we all would have been happy with a draw, even a narrow defeat at Ipswich, following it up with a win at Hull - Instead these two away trips continue to show the "never say die" attitude that we're getting used to seeing from a Nathan Jones team.
Could have been better had Campbell's early effort gone in, but was well saved... Annoyingly Hull slowly grew into the game, and it became a bit of a scrappy end to end match. Definitely a lack of quality on show this afternoon though, and the lack of finishing from either team meant that the 1-1 score-line was probably a fair result, all things considered.
Said it on the Match Thread, but fair play to Jones for throwing everything at it with the subs, rather than ever accepting a narrow defeat.25 -
Have a think about where you thought we’d be after this many games before the season started. Now have a look at the league table.
So proud to be an addick.58 -

Didn't lose ground on Boro in second.16

Started with a ‘weaker’ 11 and still managed to walk away with a point. Excellent stuff.Thought Apter was decent, I just don’t know how he gets in the side ahead of Bree.Happy for Berry. Everyone in this squad has a part to play.12

Job done. If you can’t win, don’t lose13

The players never gave up, they looked knackered. Really acceptable point. We’ve got a good team Charlton fans, believe!!!.COYR.8

I'd rather we lost 2-0 trying to get an equaliser then 1-0 and simply shutting up shop. Jones it seems agreed with me today. He threw on a number of subs with an eye for a goal and we nicked back the point we almost dropped.

A great return considering we had back to back away games against tough opposition again - and as with last time when it happened, you could see the toil it had taken on the players.
Really don’t fear anyone in this league at the moment which is a great feeling to have at this stage of the season.3 -
I’ve hardly seen any mention of another excellent James Bree set piece. The curl caused their defender to misjudge it, and the whip gave Berry the chance to chest it in.
Happy with a point.

Still in the top 67

Clearly Jones saw this game as a bit of a free hit after Tuesday's result. Looking at this starting line-up, clearly he experimented with his best 11. Weeks like this show him who can start 3 games in 8 days.7

I saw a stat where when a team has two away games on the spin, they lose the second match 60% of the time. I understand it has to happen but it shouldn't be twice in a row. Also, not happy the second match is a northern trip as it was against Preston. We have now played two more away games than home so that is a positive. I thought we looked tired but they didn't do much and decided to sit deep and try to break on us which is always dangerous.9

Pleased for Berry, because he has been forgotten about by many, but he always has the knack of popping up for goals.22

Why would we shut up shop when losing? Jones was always going to put on attacking subs.Dazzler21 said:I'd rather we lost 2-0 trying to get an equaliser then 1-0 and simply shutting up shop. Great to get the draw and I love that this team doesn't give up but I think there are a couple of things we need to really work on. 1. Don't dick around so much when we're in possession at the back - especially on the edge of our box. 2. Need to improve our forward passing, at times it is far too casual. Need to think not just about whether it'll get to its intended target, but also how will they be able to control it and use it to our advantage. Too often we play passes that are too near the opposition player, or that force our man to stretch or move unnaturally in order to do something with it. Over all though, very happy to have 7 from 9 points this week. Let's have an easier week and then smash those Swans on Saturday.9

It's been a long ass week, lots of travelling for the boys, so I'm over the moon that we managed to get 7 out of 9 points in some VERY tricky fixtures.

TC so frustrating with his end product throughout (not just the early chances)!!
Shame about the Gillesphey error but again what it showed is we really struggle to open teams up when we have to go for it, that goal didn't look like it was coming, we will have to work on being better in possession on the offensive, we were very slow and ponderous on the ball
Hull were like a mirror image of us, very strong defensively and the way they pressed our defence into countless errors in the second half
draw a fair result overall and would have taken that pre match, and 100% 7 points from this week!
2 big homes now to see where we can get ourselves before a very tough run of games7 -
Really happy with that point. Back home at the valley next week and time to recouperate. Great effort.5
