When and why did Charlton start wearing blue away kits?

We seem to be a team with no fixed away colour, we've dabbled with white, red, yellow, black, grey, purple, cream, and so on. My question is, given our rivalry with Millwall, isn't it a bit weird that adidas, Admiral, Ribero, Joma, Nike, and Castore (and probably others) have manufactured blue alternate kits for us?

Anyway, Millwall have had red kits before now, and given the fact they've changed the blue they use to a navy at the moment, there's less association with other shades of blue than previously. It would be silly if teams avoided other colours due to rivals completely, especially in London, imagine if you refused to use any colour used by a local rival, you'd be restricted to bizarre colour combinations only0 -
When Charlton moved to the Mount in December 1923 they wore the Catford Southend colours of light and dark blue striped shirts to mark the first match at that new ground11

I think I might buy that blue retro kit that's available these days. I don't think I'll look as good in it as Sonny Carey does, but whatever!!!1

The blue tops over the years I have generally liked.
As a preference it would be yellow if we decided to stick with one colour for the away shirt.3 -
Palace basically looked up to their greater neighbours and thought in admiration, respect and a pinch of jealousy ’let’s take a piece of each.’ Their banners about red and blue and South London pride are actually paying homage to their influencers. They forgot that nobody normally wears red and blue together because you look like an idiot. Blue jeans and a red T shirt is as far as is socially acceptable.2

Blue second string shirts came in during the mid eighties (and I have always rather liked them and have an original version of the one being re-sold now). Yellow was a popular choice during the seventies, so much so that a yellow band was incorporated into Charlton scarves at the time. We played at home once in purple! This was against a Chinese side I think. White was the main stay in the forties and fifties - think FA cup winning side at Wembley.1

The blue Osca is one of two designs since '83 I'm still looking for, if anyone happens to have one they no longer want2

I never like seeing us in blue, it just feels wrong. But let's not pretend that away shirt colours are anything to do with history, tradition or rivalry; it's about what will sell. More people will wear blue than other colours so periodically the shirt brands will come up with blue kits for us.1

87 blue Adidas Charlton wore in play off decider vs Leeds is a lovely kit - only yellow FADS early 80’s is better
Obvs red and white is the perfick football kit, as are red grounds - but most of our blue away kits I have liked
As for the purple and green 🥴
One yellow kit I had difficulty with was the yellow we had late 80’s - we wore it Arsewipe away at Highbury - 2-2 draw, with a superb individual goal by Steve McKenzie - think it was an Admiral kit - it was so Yellow it felt like it would give me a headache !!!0 -

Around 1974 we played the pikeys away, it was on tele. We played in White with a red marking running from underneath the armpit down, also with a shirt collar, it was fantastic.

Thanks for the info guys, lot of stuff in here I didn't know. I suppose I was thinking of various news stories I've heard about ultras in Europe kicking off and boycotting kits with even a speck of a rival's colour on them, and wondering why we're not bothered here. Every day is a school day!0

Am I right in thinking there were two of the same design, one having The Woolwich running across.

if you have fully forsaken the Woolwich Rejects for the true SE London side than we can kill the fatted calf0 -

I guess black should be our natural away kit just purely because of our badge.

Ive always been a traditionalist for home kits, but liked weird and wacky away kits. My fav away kit is the Green and White hoops with a thin red hoop. Think we lost 4-0 at the Reebok wearing that0 -

Black football tops apparantly are a good seller.

We should just turn the red shirts inside out and be done with it2
