  • Absolutely no surprise to me. A quality player who imo we should have tried a lot lot harder to keep hold of.

Still, I'm sure someone will be along to remind me of a couple of crosses into the crowd at the weekend and that current substitute Apter has a higher "ceiling ".
I think Small does have the higher ceiling compared to Apter. But, I'm very happy with Apter and Bree (if we can extend to full season loan or permanent) as the Small replacement.
  • Small currently in the top 4 for most crosses and progressive carries in Championship.

Interesting to see the kind of attacking numbers you need to be in the top 9.

My main take away from that is almost every non-league hope we've signed over the years has been a disappointment, but the one we refused to push the boat out for a little bit was Sorba Thomas, and he's gone on to have a really excellent Football League career. Typical.

What makes it worse is wasn’t that the same summer we signed Kirk?

Almost. Thomas went to Huddersfield in  January, we then signed Kirk that summer.

He puts in the crosses but his Shot Creation (SCA) stats are then a decent amount lower than the rest of the top 6 (all I can see on Fbref for some reason) which is what a lot of the criticism is about, it's not that he doesn't cross but that the crosses are poor. For some reason I can't attach a screenshot so I'll put it in the next comment

  • His stats are significantly lower than most of the others in that list

That's a helpful comparison table to the original. Just shows how skewed some stats can be, they can look more impressive on first look.

It's an example of why the eye test is so useful. Those stats looks impressive if you've never seen him play, if you have you can take a decent guess that the crosses are less succesful than his peers. Then you know what stats you're looking for to either confirm/disprove your hunch

Probably ranks number one in the championship for most crosses sent in to Row Z as well.

I could be wrong but i've always felt that Small had made his mind up and agreed to go to Preston long before our promotion was confirmed.

So i don't think it's really a case of us not trying hard enough, more that by the time our promotion even made it a discussion, he was already committed to them.
I don't know if he'd already had contact with/decided on Preston specifically at that point but I do agree he was already thinking of moving on.

I'll be very surprised if he signs another contract with Preston when it comes to it and probably will do the same to them.

It was embarrassing yesterday the way our fans were giving him stick I don’t mean the usual banter which in the main was funny but there were a few shouting stuff like I hope you get cancer ! Absolutely no excuse for that kind of behaviour towards a player that helped us get promoted and left us for more money

I was going to say that at best a few of our fans are coming across as total thickos, but if that’s the case, then that’s disgusting.

Football fans in the worst possible light. Scumbags.
As someone that was standing very close to the middle at the back, I can safely say that I heard no such thing, and would have called it out if I had.

I’m not suggesting it didn’t happen.
I was near the middle and didn't hear that either, to be honest I have never heard anything that horrific from a Charlton fan.

Also not saying it didn't happen but that would surprise me to hear that.

Sadly I have, recently-ish too. I remember someone trying (and failing miserably) to get a chant about Neil Harris's health problems at the away game last season, thankfully everyone ignored him/gave him a dirty look and he piped down and moved away

He is class and would still be starting for us, instrumental in our results towards the end as a lot of sides couldn't cope with him.

If his finishing was better he would be in the Premier league as has all the other attributes.

Kayne stayed close to him the whole first half and held on cause he knew if he got past him he was never catching him. Pace we never really replaced tbh.
