I’d rather have both in the squad .  Apter is better technically , Small is more athletic.  I don’t see this wing back role lasting for Apter - we need him higher up the pitch with less defensive responsibility , in my view .
Definitely would rather have both, and losing Small is a big blow even if he wouldn’t be in our first eleven now. I think Apter is the better player for that role than Small is, but having Small to cover both sides would be ideal

No way would Small have stayed with us, just to be cover on either side.

Yes and that’s why he left, we didn’t give him the contract of a key player because he isn’t one

I think he’d have been a key player eventually, even if he hadn’t started the season .  Can’t have enough good footballers in your team - he’d have found his way in .

Apter doesnt appear to be as quick as Small was, for me.

Definitely would have been in future, but I think it’s more about making him one of our highest paid players. Some of the rest of the squad might not have been too pleased

Agree but I’m sure he’ll score more, and he looks a better crosser and passer.

Different players, I think both will have a good season with some inconsistency mixed in.

But was Small willing to wait for "eventually"? Evidence suggests not - the story seems to be he wanted a guaranteed start and commensurate pay, Jones wasn't willing to make that deal and neither side compromised.

Absolute lottery for journos interviewing Nathan jones - are you going to get a strip torn off you or some golden copy out of the Brian Clough playbook?

For what it's worth, I wouldn't read too much into Small's comments on why he signed for Preston - new signings always cite one of about 3 reasons for moving clubs and always say "this is the only place I wanted to come", but strangely never mention the pay rise they are usually getting as well.

A rare case of a net positive all around I think, we helped get his career back on track, he helped us get promoted, Preston gained a decent attacking wing back, Small got a pay rise, and we ended up strengthening that side of our team with Apter and Bree, everyone wins really.

A bit OTT that.  All clubs and managers could say that about players they lose, that's football.

Ah, I see the more zen, chilled-out Nathan Jones of recent weeks has left the building 🤣

    All about the dough.

At a guess he easily doubled his salary,  and moved into a substantially bigger property up there at a fraction of the price compared to where he was living.

It's worked out ok for him, and for us by the looks, so everyone is a winner really.

I still think its an odd move on paper.... we ended up spending a good amount and up to now look just as comfortable at this level as they do. We have bigger crowds and generally look to have more momentum for the long term. I would have got it if he went to Ipswich, Leicester or even someone like Coventry.

It was just a bit odd that he went there, if he had any idea we were going to strengthen as we did.

Anyhow no hard feelings - he played a role getting us up, and seems to be doing well there.

The boos for Small were there right from the off. I wasn't sure which way it would go, I did kinda wonder if he'd look back on his time with us fondly and be one of those where he came over to acknowledge the fans at the start etc. Obviously didn't turn out that way, and seems Ramsay was given a single task and that was being all over the guy and gave him no quarter, was proper brutal at times. But also had to admit feeling quite pleased every time his crosses went out for a throw.

Saying that, should've put money on him scoring for free money...
