  • Hull City: can I copy your homework

Charlton Athletic: ok but don’t make it too obvious

    Hull City:

Would also be a very nice Coventry home kit too.

  • We've got Wrexham and Stoke away in November, so I guess we'll see it in at least one of those games.

But we didn’t wear it Sheff Utd or Bristol City so it’s a bit puzzling
  • True, though I guess if it's classified as the third kit, then we'd first see if we can wear the blue kit, and only if that doesn't work would we wear the black one... come to think of it, that means we might not wear it at Wrexham or Stoke either. Hmm.

Away kit was fine against Bristol City and presumably it was also used against Sheffield United because of their black shorts 🤷‍♂️

Which means away kit will be fine v Wrexham too. Stoke seems like the only opportunity for the black kit for a while

Both Charlton & QPR had white shorts when we played them at Loftus Road recently.

👍 probably just favouring the away kit then. Back in the 19-20 season we didn't use the third at all (though it was catalogue kit unlike this season).

  • Another thought... a couple of seasons ago we had a black goalkeeper shirt that we weren't allowed to wear because of our red kit and colour blindness rules. If this rule still exists, maybe we can't wear the third against teams in red? Guess we'll find out as the season progresses.

Can see people's point about the logos but it's still a beauty

Now the Women have won a game in it when are the men going to pull it on?!

    Never hopefully.
  • Coventry away at the end of November we won't be able to use the away kit so it's either use the third kit or play in red. Beyond that, if we didn't need it for Sheffield United I'm not clear why it exists.

Coventry play in sky blue. We play in red. There is no need for a third kit.
  • Saving it for Palace away in the cup
  • If anyone, other than the kit manufacturers and the club who are taking a cut, can tell me that we need a 3rd kit, I’m all ears.

Long time ago now but the season we first got promoted to the premier league we ended up using 4 kits (5 if you include the new Le Coq one for the playoff final!)

That’s remarkable as I can’t imagine that many clashes. I assume this refers to mixing and matching of shirts / shorts / socks as opposed to 4 actual kits?

If we did indeed have 4 kits, did we make them all available for sale with a marketing campaign aimed at getting fans to buy them?
  • What was the 4th kit in 97/98? We wore the home, the away (white half, green and purple half) and the third (dark green with red and white bands)

As Sam says, we used those 3 kits plus the white kit (from 94-96) against Sheffield United.

Fair enough. I cant recall the kits from that season in detail but it seems strange that both the second and third shirts would have clashed so much with Sheffield United's red and white stripes that we then used a white shirt.

Of course, we have already demonstrated this season that we can wear our second kit at Sheffield United.

So my original point stands - there is no need for a 3rd kit, particularly one that is heavily marketed when it will have limited use (other than to placate those that have bought it).

Had to go to some lengths to wear the old white as new sleeve badges were added (though didn't bother removing the old ones!) and new numbering. Presumably it was the stripes on the away and the darker coloured hoops on the third that deemed it necessary.
Though I agree they're not really needed these days. If there's an issue I don't see why teams can't wear one of the keeper kits as they're mostly short sleeved anyway.
  • There may be times in any given season when a 3rd kit is genuinely required. I'd assume they are designed and ordered before the next season's teams are confirmed and so in theory another kit may be essential. I think my issue in creating one as a de facto kit that is then marketed with much fanfare when it will be limited in use (unless worn simply for the sake of wearing it).

If that 3rd kit is used, then do a one off run and don't fleece fans in doing so.

If I recall correctly the yellow kit of the late 80's (2-2 at Highbury, possibly worn at Anfield as well) was a 3rd kit with limited use and never produced for sale.

Am sure the yellow one was not sold.  If you have one it is almost certainly a players top and also worth a bit of dough.
  • Surely they are contractually obliged to wear the 3rd kit a certain amount of times?

I'm sure there will be times we'll wear it when we could've worn the away kit. Although i do agree there's not really a lot of need for one.

What is ridiculous though is that Wolves and Norwich both have a 3rd kit. Norwich will only clash in 2-3 games (Oxford, Watford and at a stretch maybe Hull) and Wolves don't clash with anyone.

Yeah we've had a few 3rd kits that weren't sold, the last of which being in 17-18. Can't see it happening again for some time though, if at all. In fairness people don't have to buy every kit, it is a choice.

I seem to remember that last season, different kits had slightly different sponsors.
If they all have the same sponsorship this year, probably less chance of seeing the black kit as we seem to be playing in red more when away from home this season.
