Philosophy

Does anyone consider themselves to be a philosopher?

I can't say I know an awful lot about it....but I do like making up quotes.

I may have partially got this from a record I listened to.

My personal input:

"Death is a tragedy....but life is Misery" -  Dave, on Charltonlife, 2025

"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them" - Albert Einstein

Know the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is knowing that the tomato is a fruit - wisdom is not including it in a fruit salad.

Know the difference between a spanner and a spanner.

One is a useful tool kept in a toolbox.

The other is just a tool.

Fear doesn't stop death, it stops life.

If it costs you your peace, it's too expensive.

Never take criticism from someone you wouldn't take advice from.

Ambition without action turns into anxiety.

You can do anything, but you can't do everything.  Focus.

If you want to make the wrong decision, ask everyone.

All of those are very good and almost a mild wake up call.

Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about their own.

You can lead a horse to water, but if you can make it swim on its back you’ve really got something.

AI informed me of where "Death is a tragedy but life is a misery" originated from.

I thought I put it together along with song lyrics I'd heard of. I also thought it was that good, Dolly Parton would have considered getting the quote tattooed on her tits!

Turns out some German came up with it.

The quote "death is a tragedy but life is a misery" reflects a philosophical pessimism that views human existence as inherently filled with struggle and suffering. While death is tragic for those left behind, the phrase suggests that the deceased is free from a life that is fundamentally unhappy or burdensome.
This idea is most closely associated with the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, who argued that human life is a constant oscillation between the pain of desire and the emptiness of boredom.
