Great defending from Gough to win the ball to start the move. Want to see more of him as he seems to have a good football brain, a bit like a Solly who plays centrally - reads the game well, keeps possession, does his job for the team to free up our attacking players.
We played 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, depending how you look at it.
MacLorg - GK, stood no chance with the tap in, watching back again he’d want to do better with the first long range goal, while the 2nd looks like it deflected.
Hobden - RB, always solid at this level and works hard, even got in the box a few times near the end which showed a great attitude to try to help us equalise or score a winner.
Laq - RCB, our best defender on the day. Showed that desire to defend but also brough the ball out of defence and wasn’t afraid to take it high up the pitch. Strong competition for Zach Mitchell as a CB on the fringes of the first team.
Ewens-Findlay - LCB, he’d have thought he was fouled for the tap in and a lot of the time that’ll be given. Ramsay or Jones either win the foul or hold off the opponent, so it’s something for him to learn from. Looks like he’s got the size but too early to properly see what he’s about.
Sheaf (trialist) - LB, looked mobile enough, took some decent corners, mixed results when it came to keeping possession but how much is ability vs settling into a new team? I could see us offering him a contract but wouldn’t be concerned if we didn’t. On the smaller side but not an issue at FB.
Gough - DM, best game I’ve seen from him. Lost count of the number of loose balls he was first to and good defensive moments in general. NJ will like that about him so I can see why he made his first team debut. The question for me is whether he’s quick enough for the first team. It’s not a big concern as that game made it clearer for me he’s got a good football brain, he can be more than just a steady u21 player.
Amissah - CM, quiet game, first time I’ve seen him. Wasn’t involved much so I’ve not worked out what he’s about. I know he’s played as a winger so not sure what his best position is.
Safa - CM, another quiet game, I assume he’s got more to show on the ball because he’s small and not very physical, though he did well to nearly score a header.
Rylah - RW, scored a header and penalty so played a big part in us getting the draw. Usual from him, pace, gets crosses in, I can see why the club stick with him, but frustrating at times with his decision making. Not a typical modern wide player in that his game is all about pace and crossing, rather than tricks and cutting inside to shoot, which makes him a bit different. I’d like to see him get a loan to hopefully push his game up a level.
Reid - LW, scored our other goal, got the ball in the left, ran at them, cut inside and a great finish. He’s the opposite to Rylah as that’s what his game is all about. Only turned 17 late last season but has so much to his game - pace, strength, height, plenty of tricks, can score and I’m sure has a few assists in him. The one to really look out for over the next couple of years - no surprise he was offered a 3 year pro deal.
Sol-Loza - ST, used his pace to win the penalty. Uses it to press defenders too. Unsure if long term he’s a lone striker, but like Reid he’s stepped up a year early so should still be developing physically. I expect he’ll be working on his hold up play, touch, decision making and reading of the game but should get a few goals along the way at this level.
Tagoe - sub LW, set up Rylah’s header with a good cross. Great feet and balance to create the space for it. I would guess he’s one of the u18s next in line for a pro deal. Left footed so offers something different to the other wingers. Hope to see him get more u21 game time as he’s exciting to watch.
Washington-Amoah - sub CM, continued from where I saw him in the Spurs u17 cup final last season - mobile, decent on the ball, bit of energy about him, hopefully he can add strength to that as he develops to become more well rounded. As with the three players above he’s another still eligible for the u18s.
