  • I said before we signed him that I wasn’t sure he was the right fit for our system. You have to stick with him now because of the price tag. But the longer it goes without a goal the harder it will be

No we don't - Ahadme was the most expensive signing last season and Jones dropped him.

Football teams need to be a meritocracy.
  • Kelman done well tonight lucky not to score at least 2 and led the line well despite total lack of service .. start him Saturday against his old club
    Bexley behave
  • Kelman is a bust
  • Taking into account the league/cup/friendlies he played in for us, I can barely remember anything he’s done of any note.

To suggest that Tanto/Leaburn/TC have had bad seasons so far as well because they haven’t scored is missing the point. We know exactly what those players bring and they’ve all played a  role in the performances that we’ve put out.

Unless we’ve got the ball pinging around the six yard box regularly, then I don’t see what he’s going to add to our overall game.

It sounds ridiculous considering how much we spent but he’d be 5th choice right now before the three aforementioned players and Matt Godden when he’s fit.
  • He’s a bust it’s now official

Was it unconfirmed speciation when you said the same thing 15 minutes earlier?
    Yep that’s correct

  • He hasn't looked good so far but it's far too early to write him off. Fans (not just ours) jump on anyone if they don't hit the ground running. I've seen stuff on twitter calling Wirtz a 'bust' because he's not looked good in TWO games. I mean come on give them a chance.

Here's some stats that show you should never write a player off this early on.

Dennis Bergkamp took 7 games to score his first Arsenal goal.
Thierry Henry took 9 games to score his first Arsenal goal.
Ian Rush took 9 games to score his first Liverpool goal.
Kelman last season only had 3 league goals by mid-December

I do think it’s fair to question whether he fits the way we play though, which was being mentioned before we’d even signed him

Or perhaps QPR just had it right all along, I hope not.

Is he the new Gassan  Ahadme.

In the sense that he came in, had little pre-season,  and is possibly being asked to play a different role outside his natural game and won't be given much time?

    Probably, yeah.

Yes that's the main concern. Given the fee he ended up going for i do wonder if we'd have been better off signing Kone from Wycombe instead.

But Kelman could easily come good once he settles in, like you say he took a while to get going last season and then couldn't stop scoring.

I said earlier in the thread that Kone is a much better signing, but I honestly don’t think he would have been an option for us. Always was going to have interest from more established championship sides because of his potential

I think Kelman will come good, but my view on him hasn’t changed since before we signed him. He needs to play up front with Leaburn or Godden to succeed in the championship. I think he could become a player that can be a focal point but that’s going to be later on in his contract with us as he develops

I agree, Kone might have been our first choice but we’re always at a disadvantage being a promoted side. Any player would hold out for an established Championship team.

    Hi all.

First time poster. I was banned from another Charlton Forum for disagreeing with the "fella" that runs it. Even got offered out in a private message.

Anyway, fitting that the Kelman & Knibbs threads are on topic for me.

I think both these players came to the club with such high expectations due to last season's stats and the subsequent price tags. That expectation is blinding some supporters in my opinion.

Looking at the bigger picture, Kelman is a confidence player. He just needs that first goal to go in (actually pretty close on a couple of occasions last night with last ditch blocks) and he'll be up and running. You could see Tanto & Knibbs encouraging him last night after each attempt. The players will know it too.

The Championship is a step-up, but personally, I think he'll take it.
lol sounds like you were on and subsequently banned from the same site just like I was . Been there seen that… 🤣

You'll soon learn we don't do such sensible, well thought out takes on here

    (Welcome, brilliant first post)
  • They said in the commentary on Saturday, that we had signed players who scored something like 60 goals and had18 assists in League One last season.

Unfortunately we are in The Championship now.

Tanto was the one that had me worried last night, where Kelman I saw a big step up
I thought exactly the same last night. Tanto was very poor, but I'm hoping it was an "off night", as he's looked effective coming off the bench in the league games, especially against Watford.

I wonder if there's a way of playing with Leaburn & Kelman, the former can do that hold up job and help bring Charlie into play....

    Very strange.

You're not allowed to disagree with him. If you do, the world "fella" gets thrown at full force and you're reminded that you know nothing compared to him, lol.

Every defeat is followed with, "NJ is shit, our signings are shit, I know everything". Then your posts are deleted and you're sent a threatening PM.

Anyway, I don't want to start off by hijacking a thread. So I'll leave it there.

Kelman to score coming off the bench on Sat vs QPR 🤞
Just one piece of friendly advice fellas... The mods aren't overly fond of discussions about other forums, they do tend to prefer it if comments about those forums or anyone on there is kept to a minimum

Right, but for every Bergkamp, Henry and Rush there are countless others who started rubbish and never improved. The reason you can cite Bergkamp, Henry and Rush by name is because they are the exception rather than the rule.

I’m not saying Kelman won’t turn this around, but the fact that that list of players managed it decades ago doesn’t really enhance his chances of doing so.

Let’s hope he does - no one benefits if Kelman can’t find a way to contribute.
