Haven’t watched them back since but wouldn’t be surprised if there was some clever blocking on the keeper there too. Those two and the Watford goal are basically from the same routine. Delivery can be coached too, just as shooting and open play passing canwmcf123 said:
Yes I agree with that - but the delivery is key and that’s nothing to do with coaching . And a good keeper would have caught those two against Orient . You are right , though , I was oversimplifyingfenaddick said:
Much more complicated than that, it’s about routines. Watch the goal from Saturday back, Doc moves at the perfect time to block off the keeper so that Jones can apply the pressure for the header back and also to drag a marker out of the centre of the goal. It’s all choreographed. You need good delivery too but that’s useless without the right movement.wmcf123 said:
Equally, there wasn’t anything special about those corners at Orient - if AMB had let 2 over his head like that, we’d have been fuming . I would assume set piece coaches are as much about defending them as anything - there’s nothing groundbreaking about kicking the ball into the penalty area - ideally flat but clearing the first man. They were praising the Arsenal guy a couple of years ago but the facts were that Rice and Saka were delivering the perfect cornersChar1t0n said:
Defiantly the Orient game, people start believing, but I also think Bolton away was another, as we normally get battered by them at their ground, and to go behind, as we did against Orient, and then come back late on, as we did against Orient... I'm seeing a theme heresoapboxsam said:The reason Charlton are now a Championship side and not a League 1 team is because at the business end of last season we scored from set pieces.
Godden again from open play but a vital component was putting the ball into the danger area from a dead ball.
Not just at Wembley from Gillesphey but a set pieces at the covered end when Macca scored from the sub Gilbert's corner plus the two Gilbert corners in the late, late show at Orient which gave our campaign such momentum.
First Macca then Ramsay with headers and this for me was the match when we really believed we could ride the wave all the way to Wembley.
Orient must hate us, 92nd min winner at home, 2 90+min goals away and a winner at Wembley to get promoted, who'd be a football fan, eh!
I personally started to believe after Huddersfield at home, prior to that, I was still insisting on a mid-table finish as I was waiting for the "inevitable" fall-off after such a good run.2 -
Indeed - just goes to show how, if you got your business done early, it gives time for the manager to integrate players both pre-season and in the first few games of the season proper. Year after year we've seen us scrambling around for last minute signings with any number of those being ones we didn't really want or need.Mendonca In Asdas said:Don’t think I can remember a rumours thread so quiet, at this time of year, it’s great!1 -
They usually start to peak about now as well a game or two into the season!Mendonca In Asdas said:Don’t think I can remember a rumours thread so quiet, at this time of year, it’s great!0 -
Back on the transfer window. I think one more would do it. A fullback/wingback on a free ideally one that is comfortable both sides. Can be on a short term contract until Jan or a 1 year. That then gives us some experienced cover and means that if we get an injury we aren't forced to throw a kid in every game to a gruelling saturday-tuesday championship schedule. If the likes of Enslin, Laq, Rylah are knocking on that door and do make that position their own in that situation then great. And we haven't lost anything by keeping a journeyman short term signing on the bench. But it does give us the option to ease them in and not over expose them.
If I'm being greedy I'd like a LWB and RWB. But one that can cover both is fine.1 -
Just thinking the same.Mendonca In Asdas said:Don’t think I can remember a rumours thread so quiet, at this time of year, it’s great!
What a difference it makes to get most of your signings done early and have a full pre season and hit the ground running.
Contrast that with previous seasons when we couldn't even fill the bench at Sunderland and we've had to take half the youth team on tour under Holden because we never had enough senior Players.

At least we have Match Thread topics to discuss...🙄Mendonca In Asdas said:Don’t think I can remember a rumours thread so quiet, at this time of year, it’s great!0 -
To be honest after watching Fullah last night no reason why he can’t cover both sides he was arguably MOTM yesterday. Would have thought Lembikisa would have come in but he’s not looked anywhere near as impressive as Fullah.cantersaddick said:Back on the transfer window. I think one more would do it. Kone off to QPR for £2.75m and add-ons according to Sky Sports. I've got to say that sounds like a smarter deal than the one for Kelman, as I think he suits our style of play a lot more. Will be interesting if he can rediscover his early season form.6

Bet Wycombe are kicking themselves... Given the £8m (?) bid that they rejected in January, I know it could have been the difference between promotion to the Championship or not... But stillElliotCAFC said:Kone off to QPR for £2.75m and add-ons according to Sky Sports. There is no denying it, I would have 100% taken kone over kelman who I am convinced does not suit the way we play but time will tell. Qpr have grabbed a bargain there6

A good bit of business that for QPR, getting Kone and paying for him with a striker they clearly didn't rate with one year left on his contract.2

Couldn't give a fig about QPR and Kone, I'm still convinced Kelman will prove a better addition given the time and opportunity to do so...39

But that's my point. If Fullah (who btw is not a wing back) or any of the other youth gets an opportunity and grabs it with both hands then amazing. And what have we lost? Low wages for 6 months or a year for a backup. But at least by having cover we know that if a young kid has a tough couple games or their form drops or they struggle with the Saturday Tuesday schedule at least we have an option.Crispywood said:

Where we've gone unstuck in the not so distant past is by having too many youth as our cover and then an injury to the first choice means you have to play them every game no matter what. It overexposes them rather than allowing us to manage them and ease them in.
No one will be happier than me if we don't need to use the backup either because of the immense fitness and injury luck of the first choice or because kids leapfrog them in the pecking order. But we can't rely on those things to happen so we should have a cheap backup option either way.
Bennett looked good to me on the left. Whether Dexter was that player on the right I'm not sure. Either way I'm still convinced a fullback cover option is required.2 -
Jones said that the door ' isn't closed ' for Bennett , just it isn't a 'priority' for a left back. I suspect he might be trying his luck elsewhere , but it wouldn't surprise me if he got a six month deal similar to the one Dan Potts got as he is a player Nathan likes.cantersaddick said:

Dexter is in his last year at Wolves. Maybe we could loan him and then he effectively has a year's trial to see if he should sign.1 -
People seem to forget how rubbish Kone was January onwards. They point to Wycombe changing shape, losing form under their new manager etc but the reality is decent players at that level score goals regardless of the team around them, look at May for instance at Cheltenham and then at us.19

Lloyd Jones pocketed him in the playoffs2 -
Another factor being his first season in professional football, so a drop in form/physicality in the final stages is understandable.sam3110 said:People seem to forget how rubbish Kone was January onwards. Yes, I was going to say look back at Saturday’s goal and Docherty’s actions in front of Jones, fenaddick said:

I got lols when i mentioned Kone earlier in the summer. Was never convinced WW had an £8m bid for him.
But regardless, I reckon Jones knows exactly what he’s doing. Kelman and Godden. Leaburn and Tanto.

And that cheating on/off pitch fake injury moment in the play off semi at the Valley, while laughing. Dodged a bullet with attitude issues there methinks.4 -

Nobody has forgotten that. But also nobody has forgotten his stunning goal scoring record up to January, when he was unstoppable. Get that Kone back, and he'll be worth much more than QPR paid up front.sam3110 said:People seem to forget how rubbish Kone was January onwards. It's very nice of Kayne Ramsay to let Kone out of his pocket to sign for QPR. Top player & a top bloke.19

Take it your talking about Ramsay there mate...🙄Braziliance said:It's very nice of Kayne Ramsay to let Kone out of his pocket to sign for QPR. Top player & a top bloke.3 -
Kone is massively over rated. Cant just blame a change in manager for his dip and strikes me a Mac Bonne type of player, looks good when you are winning but cant drag a team through harder patches.

I think to call it “the reason” is a bit strong , but that Orient game was important .0 -
