Palace fans embarrassing themselves again

  • Parish has said they will sell Guehi this month rather than let him run his contract down
This always puzzles me the way some club chairmen/women talk like they hold all the cards.
If a player doesn’t want to leave right now, he doesn’t have to, right? He’s got a contract. Palace have to honour it. So if Guehi decides to hang on so he can get a bumper payday next year, won’t Palace have to just suck it up?
Presumably, this would be risky for him in case he gets injured or loses form, but still.
You are correct in that he doesn't have to move. But if he gets a decent offer from a bigger club this summer then he'd be silly to turn it down as you'd assume his aim will be to get a big move.

It's probably different to the example of Trent leaving Liverpool as Madrid pretty obviously said we'll sign you but only if you're on a free.

But Trent wasn't even free. Madrid paid 10m to release him from his contract pre-June 30th.

Would they have done so without the world club competition?

Well yes but that was only a last minute decision for the CWC, you'd imagine that in their previous chats they'd discussed him waiting him out and that they generally weren't going to pay a fee for him had he gone a year earlier, or if he'd signed a new deal.
  • Talking of embarrassment, I was embarrassed by that FA Cup winners flag being waved in front of the Covered End on Saturday - 1947 and 2005.
I thought I'd missed something until I was told that 2005 related to the Women's FA Cup win. Ridiculous.
Yep. I fear this qualifies me as a sexist, misogynistic chauvinist, but I also feel like this.

I also agreed with Joey Barton's comment that the penalties in the Women's Eurofinal "were borderline embarrassing". He's a total arsehole, so I clearly need to take a good look at myself.

As I replied to someone on X (which may actually have been @superclive98) - the flag celebrates that fact that Charlton are on of only 6 or so teams in the country that have a Men’s FA Cup Triumph and a Women’s FA Cup Triumph.

Arguably, the women’s team had been more successful that the men’s for a good chunk of time - 2002-2007, and were probably unfairly capitulated on the back of the men’s teams first relegation.

Don’t quite get the hate or embarrassment, of celebrating the achievements of our club- whether than be men’s, women’s or academy!

Dare I say it, if you get embarrassed by a flag- I’d hate to know what else cringes you out!
But if people can't complain about not liking women's football then what would their personality be?

Appeal rejected , put in the Conference League
That is actually far from good news.

The standard of teams in it is awful - Chelsea won it last year by playing their reserve team.  Palace could well win it.

    Awful thought.

  • It is slightly dubious promoting the women's FA Cup win as equal to the men's in our history, considering that the women's team were a top team called Croydon FC which we bought in 2000, rather than something organically created. Especially as we then dumped them in 2007.

While the success of that team in the 2000s was great, I feel much more attachment to the current setup.
  • Firstly, haha!

Secondly, presumably they will make less money from Conference than you do for being in Europa, so that's a plus.

Lastly, although they have a better chance of winning Conference, hopefully they concentrate on that so much, they mess up with the league.

If/when they lose Guehi and Eze this summer, they don't have a fantastic squad to be playing in four competitions.
  •  By all means fly a flag celebrating the women’s team winning the women’s FA Cup at a women’s team game.

So what, if this sort of shite needs to be waved on a flag then wave a 1947 one at men’s games and wave the other one at women’s games.

For the record I wasn’t embarrassed but find it cringe worthy
  • I'm on a horse racing group and a few of the Palace fans call us 'Caravan Dwellers'. Cannot wrap my head around how they think Charlton is in any way as shit as Selhurst/Thornton Heath.

    Neither are the Côte d'Azur...

I’m typing this sitting in Cannes, and can confirm that this is correct.

If the men could take penalties as well as they think they can, Palar5e might not have won another fecking trophy!

Stop being ar5eholes, women play football, Charlton Athletic have a men’s and women’s team, it’s a flag ffs……….I’ll let you know if it gets flown at their home games too………..🙄

But I don’t support or affiliate myself with the women’s team, who play in a different competition and at a different level (I think - I actually know nothing about the women’s team).

As far as I’m concerned you might as well wave a palace cup winners flag.

If you know nothing about women’s football then carry on ignoring it, why let it bother you? Strange.
  • Show me where on the flag it hurt you.

If you're saying they were borderline embarrassing because they were taken by women, that would make you misogynistic in that regard, but I'm not saying you are.

They were embarrassing, as they were in the charity shield yesterday. Failure to convert pens happens in the men's game too.

I'd like to see some stats on conversion ratios in men's v's women's game over time out of interest, but I doubt there's a significant difference, and if there was, I doubt it could be attributed to anything biological, more coincidental.

And do remind me how many tournaments our senior male teams have won on penalties! Did Barton mention that too?

It’s difficult to ignore nowadays, which is a shame.

I feel like you're better than this level of obvious trolling, Sporadic old chap. Has it been a particularly dull Monday?

I think Sporadic doth protest too much

It's lazy is what it is. So few trolls respect the craft these days, it's just a bit sad
  • Ok I’ll wind my neck in…

I fully respect those that play it and enjoy it. I recognise the club has a women’s team (as it has several other teams) and acknowledge that others engage with it and enjoy it.

It’s not for me, and I don’t agree that the histories of the two different teams should be given equivalence, be that the FA Cup or any other competition.

And Cannes is beautiful and f*cking hot…
