I realise height is an issue but her handing and positioning left a lot to be desired. She made a save at one point to a shot well wide of the goal and gifted a corner.Garrymanilow said:

Goal keeping always seems to be the most difficult position whether it be kids, lower league, women's or Scottish football.
It's undoubtedly the weakest position in women's football but it can't all be blamed on height. Maybe coaching needs to be improved.
There have been male keepers under 6 foot such as Fabian Barthez and the Mexican keeper Campos who was a mere 5 ft 7.

What I think you should do with penalties is have an indoor set up where players who do not normally take them learn one penalty. And that is the penalty they take when called upon. Indoors because it needs to be done in secret. Then when they have been in a shoot out they learn another or potentially do so, some may keep the same penalty. This should apply to men as well as women.1

No real excuse for some of the penalties last night - complete lack of conviction. To be fair as pointed out by KMB my post is probably irrelevant to the lack of quality of the pens which are rudimentary and not necessarily related to length of experience.AddicksAddict said:

No girls played football when I grew up in 80s and 90s but loads of them are playing up and down the country and hopefully that will keep growing.
I used to think the over promotion of the women's game was woke bollocks but seeing the joy and passion of my kids, especially when we won last night made me get why it's been engineered like that and we'll see the benefits of that come through.
I reckon in 20 years if not before we'll see messi level players based on the technical ability and potential of some of the youngsters playing now.
Regardless it has such a positive impact on girls and young women in terms of health and self esteem and good to give them role models and aspirations beyond the pervasive social media influencers and only fans culture that's imposed on them these days.
They were shit pens in the main but high pressure situation and even messi and ronaldo miss them.
My point was meant about the broader advert for women's game which is like comparing apples and oranges to the men's as still in its relative infancy as a mass participant sport.2 -

It's also important to practice penalties when you are really tired, as that can make a real difference when you come to strike the ball1

Thought Hemp and James played quite well, so not sure who you'd drop, albeit Kelly made the difference when she came on.
There were quite a few players who had poor games last night - Carter obviously had a stinker, and I thought the 3 in the middle and Russo weren't great either - but those two werent among them IMHO.1 -

There have been male keepers under 6 foot such as Fabian Barthez and the Mexican keeper Campos who was a mere 5 ft 7.Well I didn't blame it all on height, I just pointed out that it's always going to be an issue when the tallest keepers are around 5ft11 in goals that much taller goalkeepers find it difficult to guard effectively. There are examples of shorter goalkeepers as there will always be anomalous examples of literally anything, it doesn't change the fact that the majority of top goalkeepers in the men's game are tall and that not being reflected in the women's game means that the handling of crosses and high balls poses are very different, greater challenge for goalkeepers. I thought Hampton's positioning was actually good, apart from the goals where she didn't have a chance she kept us in the game with her saves narrowing angles and reading shots. I did see that save for a corner but I think that was a result of nerves after the team had been making countless mistakes at the back.It's not just that coaching needs to be improved in the women's game, it's that it's still in its infancy in terms of getting proper support and funding. Women's football has only really started getting anything approaching good funding in the past 10 years or so and even then it's a select few teams who get it to the proper level. That's for all women, and Carly Telford said a few years ago that goalkeeping coaching is 10-15 years behind where it is for outfielders and a lot of players still playing now will only have had bespoke keeper coaching of a decent standard quite a long way into their careers. It will be interesting to see what the standard looks like when the young kids who are playing for teams now start breaking into first teams in the next 10+ years.0 -

Looking ahead to the semi final, England are unbeaten in their last 5 games against Italy and when they met in a friendly last year we beat them 5-1.0

Russo, Kelly, and Bronze were 3 excellent Penalities.
Mead the top scorer in Euro 22, James and Clinton were poor efforts or good saves depending on your bias.England penalty taker in normal time, Stanways had already been subbed.
As England had scored 10 goals in two group games after a poor performance against Frances suggests they do know where the goal is.
Absolutely Crazy that the Swedish male manager took off Blackstenius in the 117 minute for an 18 year old when 29 year old Steina had 42 goals in 121 apps and was fresh from scoring the winning goal for Arsenal in the Champions league final and running past a slow Carter and scoring in the corner as Williamson decided not to come across to challenge.
The Swedes bottled it not helped by a manager who just didn't understand the penalty pressure.
Rashford, Saka and Sancho succumbed to pressure in a Euro final but no need to make the penalty spot closer.
They just got abused by angry gamblers and a few racists.

Which is something I think it being missed here. Yes, many of those penalties were terrible. Yes, there were very few scored due to the kicker giving the keeper no chance. Yes, a bad shootout by players who (a) were knackered and (b) clearly hadn't practiced enough. But can we give some sort of credit to two decent keepers who actually saved the ones that were saveable?
