I know it's a pre-season friendly, but he should be using the game to make the best first impression.
Check out Liverpools first goal in their friendly against PNE this afternoon and you will see Small's shortcoming........ his lack of nouse and effort when required to defend!!
No issues with him as a forward threat but unless he takes his defensive responsibilities more seriously then he will not realise his potential and forever be a frustration for his managers/coaches.
I suppose it begs the question as to whether Jones thought exactly the same. I was and am disappointed he wanted out because I thought he offered us something. Having said that it would appear that Apter should he sign is an upgrade.

That's right MemphisBoy, big boys Charlton Athletic. 2x League 1 play-off winners, & don't you forget it
We are bigger boys because right now we're in a higher league.
we seem to get more fans turning up for our home games as well, a number that will probably double what they get this season - does that count as bigger ?

  • It seems The Valley is also much bigger if that helps…

I cant see us paying more than £1m-1.5m for a player who has only played one full season in league one. Blackpool fans are deluded much like the Stockport fans when we signed Tanto.
Think many fans are deluded, also some of our own as well.
To think he had one season with Tranmere in Division 2 and one season with Blackpool that don’t add up to 1.5m pound player.
if we pay that Nathan Jones is also deluded.

That’s just the price of footballers these days wouldn’t say that’s an extortionate amount of money

£1.5m is now the going rate for a good League 1 player. I wouldn't say it's extortionate at all in the current market for someone with Apters numbers.

The money sloshing around in the game is starting to filter down the leagues and will only push prices up.

  • To have Apter and TC as our wingers/second strikers would be frightening. Only concern with both is their age and experience. But both have strong promise to bring us a big payday and help consolidate us in the champ.

Of course we don’t know but what would you consider the market rate for Thierry Small had we got a fee for him from a Championship club ? I think most of us would have been disappointed with much less than £1.5 million for him even though his was his only season of playing regularly. I suggest we’d have said that given his age and potential that around £1.25 million would have been too low and the real cost should be closer to £1.75 million. Would that be deluded ?

If we were still in L1 would you be happy if we sold TC and Leaburn for say £1m? We sold Lookman for close to £10m while at that level and that was years ago. A few million on a good young L1 player is what we should expect to pay.

I'd imagine Small as an U23 with us for 18 months might have generated a £300k training fee.

And if they're willing to massively overpay to try and snag players ahead of us, let them crack on
If we pay 1.5m we have over paid.

Cawley mentioned it being around £200k.

Looking forward to the training videos from Slovenia, they were really interesting last year, be good to see and hear who has travelled, could be very telling, also looking out for Apter of course, hopefully

Can’t believe no-one’s mentioned Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink…whose shorts were the size of a marquee when we signed him!

Gave a like for this as seeing you on 666 likes set off my OCD.
  • On a slightly different note, how do you think the fees for a transfer are moved? Do you reckon that it is someone on their banking app moving cash about?

It is pointless just talking numbers as there is so much that can go into a deal.
How much is paid up front, how and when balance is paid, extra payments on promotion, number of games played, goals etc etc, and of course, the sell on fee.
Sometimes a bigger fee without the extras is better value.
