Yesterday’s 2nd Tier podcast was a review of all Championship transfer business. Kaminski was in their top 5 transfer picks and Carey made the honourable mentions list. Charlton called out as having “one of the better transfer windows so far”.
Honestly I think that's pretty accurate. There's a difference between spending a lot and spending well and I think that the business so far shows that there is definitely a plan that we are working towards.

If that plan works or not is admittedly still yet to be seen but its hard to see this window ending with desperate last minute signing of any old shit in order to start the season with enough bodies, as we've had in the not that distant past.

I know it's a pre-season friendly, but he should be using the game to make the best first impression.
Check out Liverpools first goal in their friendly against PNE this afternoon and you will see Small's shortcoming........ his lack of nouse and effort when required to defend!!
No issues with him as a forward threat but unless he takes his defensive responsibilities more seriously then he will not realise his potential and forever be a frustration for his managers/coaches.
That is cope. PNE fans are extremely excited about Small from what they've seen already, and other fans that saw the Liverpool friendly are also saying what a player he looks.

If he was a new signing for us we'd be equally excited. Let's be honest, he's a rare player thats got pace, skill and strength.
That's all true but I can't help thinking that, if NJ really wanted badly to keep him, we would have pushed the boat out much more than appears to be the case

Just out of interest, when did ‘cope’ become a noun?
  • why is everyone moaning about the fee....it ain't our money, just be glad the owners are prepared to stump it up (I am !)
Exactly who cares - it actually shows that we have owners who are investing in our club and working to a strategy of long term sustainability.  Investing in young talent, long term deals, developing them and being competitive.  Not bank rolling the club like previous owners before Sandgard who saved us from the depths of possible extinction.  Be joyous in these moments and be grateful we've got our Charlton back !!! (I am loving every minute - especially to think we are beating other clubs to these players and Jones is building a wonderful football club once again)

Don't forget that the first few pre season friendlies are very often played after a morning of pretty heavy pre season running.

Very difficult to judge any performance when you're starting a game with 10k of sprints in the legs already. Those games are there to put people through the ringer physically rather than for the player to impress a new set of fans

It can be both. He's got all the physical attributes and ability to go very far indeed, but perhaps he is a bit too much of a maverick for Jones’s liking. Jones likes disciplined players who fit into a system, which Small was not - a different manager might value him for the exact same reason.
  • I wonder if there's a way of finding out which players have gone to training camp this week and which players were not on the plane and are are left behind to train at Sparrows Lane???

Probably a mixture of stalking players socials and any videos the club put out 🤣

The use of "cope" as a noun, specifically in the sense of a self-delusion or a coping mechanism clung to in a hopeless situation, appears to be a more recent development, largely emerging from internet slang, particularly within "incel slang" initially.

But there is a budget and it’s important that money is spent wisely because the investment made by our owners must be seen to be moving us forward. Spending money without thought or good reason is just plain stupid.

If he was a new signing for us we'd be equally excited. Let's be honest, he's a rare player thats got pace, skill and strength………….. who all too frequently switches off defensively (and offensively has little to show in terms of goals/assists for all of the pace, skill and strength thus far in his journey around the leagues)
What did they say about his defending?

That is what I believe to be his problem although I do agree with HI about him being more comfortable on the left and he is clearly a forward threat (especially if he can improve on the end product).
His pace and strength will be very evident and praised on first glance, not sold on his skill as consistent quality of crossing and shooting are two very important must haves for an effective offensive threat.

Did you see the goal that I mentioned and the part he played?

We will see how he goes at PNE but I suspect some questionable habits will be noticed by those who pay attention to his defending.
Their excitement may turn with the new year once the honeymoon period is over. If he contributes 6+ goals/assists next season I’ll admit I am wrong about him, but he may also be involved in the goals conceded column as he can be inclined to switch off without the ball at his feet.

The “what a player he looks” doesn’t make it so……nor do his career stats thus far suggest he is?

Apter was the player I thought had the most potential in league one last season. When we got Carey, I said to my son, it is a shame it wasn't Apter.

Think you'll find a good percentage is the fans money, paid through the turnstiles and various outlets, which contributes to the running of our club...

I don't know if that's a serious comment, but I think one difference is that (by all accounts) Apter wants to come to us. I didn't get the impression that Kirk was ever massively keen on coming here, and that was a factor in him being rubbish for us.

Also, if we sign Apter he'll get better coaching from Nathan Jones than Kirk did from the managers we had in his time with us.

If we get apter and dkd I will buy an extra lukewarm pie every game at half time.

    No. For two reasons.

One: Nathan Jones would NEVER have signed Kirk. He is the antithesis of a Jones player.

Two: Apter is a really good, hard working player. Kirk was a rubbish, lazy one.

They're kind of the same points, but they needed saying twice.

Is extra lukewarm a bit warmer than lukewarm?

No I don’t but there is a budget and any signings we make have to fit in with that limit and be spread across the required positions. The owners provide the budget and they appoint people they think will spend it wisely and move their investment forwards. Every player has a value that Jones and the recruitment team set. I don’t see them breaking that without very very good reason. Nor should they.

Can't some of CAFC train spotters become plane spotters and report back to CL. High class binoculars needed and flight time to Slovenia.

Difficult to say with any authority.

Kirk looked like a fish out of water from day one. For some reason, and I know this is weird, but his haircut always bothered me. It looked so northernly unfashionable.
I always imagined him sitting in his London apartment with his ear defenders on because he couldn't stand the London noise, eating the stuff his mum sent down in food parcels from the Cheshire countryside.
I mean. Look where he's playing now.
    Barrow in Furness FFS!
Who, apart from a dyed in the wool northener chooses to go there?!?
