I don't know enough about murky business dealings to know, but isn't there a risk that the possibility of compulsory EFL takers would open the door wider to chancers like Southall, Farnell, et al? At the moment the scam seems to be, sell all the assets off, run up huge debts, trouser the money, find a mug punter to take the club off your hands and get out of Dodge. All the time football is a business venture the clubs / businesses must be treated just the same as any other business. There are already sanctions for clubs that break the rules or run into financial difficulties. That’s enough regulation. Where the problem is though is that The EFL are slow to react and seem to be inconsistent in their punishments. Until there is a body fit for purpose overseeing the clubs we’re going to see this time and time again. Wednesday and Hull will not be the last. Probably not the last this coming season.3

In France clubs have to submit budgets and prove they can fund them every year.
Fail to do so and you're relegated.
Lyon have been relegated this summer but have appealed.
EFL unlikely to do this because it would have to be voted in by the owners who run the EFL.
They mostly was less scrutiny, not more, and aren't going to agree to stronger punishments if things go wrong.
EFL also lack the resources and ability to audit 72 sets of accounts every year.7 -

Some posters come across as thin skinned and resentful at times. It's not as if we never laugh at other clubs misfortunes, otherwise we wouldn't have fans wishing ill of them. No doubt some will say that they (probably a loud minority of their fans) were nasty to us first, as if to justify hoping they fail, but I see that as a childish argument, not one I'll ever subscribe to.
And we of all fan bases know you shouldn't blame fans for the actions of their owners. Every club has good and bad fans, even us, so I hope they survive, with a thirty point deduction to kick off the season 😂5 -

In that situation (can't see it ever happening though) the EFL could task an independent insolvency practitioner to oversee the running of the club and prepare it for sale.2 -
Well said. I live and work in Sheffield and 99% of Sheff Wed fans are good people who through no fault of their own have ended up with a deluded owner who seems intent on destroying the club by trying to recoup money he has thrown away over the last few years.swordfish said:

I have lots of sympathy with all the people affected by the unpaid wages including the players, but many of those not getting paid will be non playing staff on very modest salaries who like many live payday to payday. You’d assume many of the players will find other clubs but it will not be as easy for many of the non playing staff.
There are of course some differences but it is not entirely dissimilar to the situation we found ourselves in a few years ago. Every fanbase, ours included, has a small percentage of idiots but the vast majority of football fans are decent people who shouldn’t have to worry about their club potentially not existing in a few months time.
It’s not just Sheff Wed but lots of others as well and football really needs a fundamental reset. People far cleverer than me will need to come up with some solutions but I have felt for many years that the wages being paid out nowadays are absolutely eye watering and surely unsustainable. It is not uncommon to hear of clubs with wage bills totalling more than 100% of their turnover which almost no other business would even contemplate yet alone be able to sustain for any period of time.4 -
They do something similar in Wales, although the clubs there of course are much smaller. There are regularly cases of clubs being threatened with losing their licence for the division they're in and getting relegated if they don't have their finances sorted by a specific deadline. In England I think pretty much they only thing a club has to prove is that their ground meets the standard for capacity and that they have either the freehold or a long enough lease over it. I think asking owners to demonstrate that they have the funds to complete the season would help a lot. It's not infallible - if a sponsor goes bust part way through the season a club may still suddenly have less money than they thought. But it would surely have to help.1 - Sponsored links:

A few years ago when Forest got promoted their wage bill was almost 200% of their turnover. A quite ridiculous number and we don't hear about it because luckily things worked out for them, but i wonder how things would've gone had they not been promoted that year.Notts_Addick said:

One of our happiest days as Charlton fans was sending Palace down in 2005. A wonderful memory laughing at another club's misfortune, as that's how football works. In this instance Wednesday aren't in trouble because they've tried to buy the league with big signings and wages, I suspect their losses are actually lower than many other Championship clubs, as they are a big club, with good gates. All clubs are losing money, that's the farce of modern football, especially the Championship.4 -
the other season, when Palace played Forest, there was only one player who [played in the fixture the previous season and that was Henderson the Palace goalie. And he played for Forest in the previous game !0

Football is all about rivalries.
Some clubs I like and others I dislike.
That's come about by supporting Charlton home and away for 60 years.
If you try and remove any feelings you have for other clubs and their supporters it would be a very bland and passion less way of supporting your chosen club.11 -

I think it's perfectly possible to hold feelings towards a particular club, but not their fans. The words 'they', 'them' and 'their' seem to trip off the tongue as if everyone involved with a club has exactly the same motives and behaves in exactly the same way. But that's just not true.2

Get real! Name me which club, any club, that you know of that hasn't celebrated a promotion on principal. You can't hold that against them. I've got a feeling that one doesn't live in the UK and the another said a while ago that they haven't attended a Charlton game for donkey's years (apologies if I'm wrong).
They've given Charlton fans plenty of trouble over the years going back to the mid 70's when they took The Covered End and more recently (as in maybe 10 years ago) attacking us as we exited Hillsborough.6 -

I've seen us play Wednesday a number of times in years gone by though, and I'm racking my brains to think of anything that stood out, other than that they were well supported and noisy. I've a feeling I went with my mate and sat in with the Wednesday to watch a game a few years back too. No idea who the opposition were. It was a horrid day and I've no recollection of the match. A right miserable bunch of moaners around us all I remember, which amused him as much as it did me tbh. I'm waiting for him to get back to me to confirm the details.
Come on guys, can't we even agree that teams don't have universally loathsome fans? The narrative on here about Orient fans thinking us to be 'vile' was based on how many posts exactly? Enough for it to be deemed a commonly held view, or wasn't it just an outlying exceptional one?

I don't want any club to be forced to go out of business. But, if it took one club going out of business to get the rest of them to put their acts in order, Sheffield Wednesday wouldn't be a bad choice...5
