Just that being in the championship will make it easier.Lloyd Jones has 4 for Luton.Sonny Carey has 48 for Blackpool
Greg Doherty has 80 for HullLuke Berry has 86 for Luton plus 17 in the Premier League
I’m not saying they’re world beaters, but Godden & Gillesphey are not the only 2 with championship experience0 -
ShootersHillGuru said:I don’t think we can underestimate the significance of the changes made back of house. New Executive Chairman, New Head of Recruitment, New CEO. Now I realise the new CEO isn’t necessarily relevant for last season but the departures of Methven and Scott have set the ground for real improvement. I believe and I think a lot of people think the same in that promotion was achieved a season early. The appointments made behind the scenes are I believe proof of intent. Not to splash the cash necessarily but to give the manager every possible chance of success. I’m cautiously optimistic that Nathan’s “journey” will be well worth buying a ticket for.Spot on with your opening line, particularly if they are an improvement on recent times.Should we stay up hopefully we can then build on that and see a chance of play-off finishes.3

The current owners have put their money where their mouths are to appoint NJ, Will Abbot, Dane Murphy as high calibre appointments. Hardly think NJ is signing that big new contract if he's been told by the owners that he's shopping in Poundland for freebies, I doubt we'll have a top half budget and smash our transfer record but there will be a good budget there and then it's down to Chapple and NJ to get to work and do the hard sell to players on why sign for us.
Not concerned at all this early in the window , the whole championship seems on a go slow signing wise. Probably not helped by the U21 Euros, CWC going on.
I will never forget how much respect Katrien had on here and Southall, I always thought they were worms. Not having a pop at anyone who did like those two, but I knew something was off immediately. Sometimes you believe what you want to believe.
Lee Bowyer was a no nonsense credible character, just like Jones, yet he still believed what wasn't true.
I am not saying they're con men like Southall, far from it, I just don't and have never believed we will get the financial backing we might need. They have even said themselves we are a year ahead of where they expected us to be. How can a club who are a Championship side historically be above projections being in a League we historically belong in? Statements like that make me sceptical of the ambition. And the whole talk of being clever to avoid FFP utilising the academy which translates in my book to "don't expect us to spend much money".
It is very early doors and like I said, I would be delighted to be extremely wrong as I want to see Charlton do well more than my judgment be correct. I am just expecting a disappointing window.
There's a lot of us very jaded and bitten down by nearly 20 years of underachievement, the Roland years, the scammers and charlatans, even Rock-on Tommy 🎸
But that's our history, it's passed - and our future still has to be written.
No guarantees.... but you know, so far the current owners haven't really done much wrong, and slowly but professionally, are putting down the foundations for a solid future.
They are not going to want to undermine that by lack of investment in player recruitment. Expect appropriate budget and sensible signings.... But we' are new boys to the division and we're not sitting on Prem League parachute payments.
But as NJ would say, we're on a journey.
Let's have some faith that the Club are in good hands and see where it takes us?
We got promoted, I am happy, looking forward to the fixtures tomorrow, looking forward to a full championship season as last time it was hindered by covid and I was going through some life changes that stopped me going footie.
I am just expecting an underwhelming window in terms of transfers. I don't expect us to replicate what Pompey and Oxford did, let's hope my instinct is wrong.
I'm not seeing the point of being pessimistic at this stage, might as well enjoy the anticipation (while we can!).
But I do believe we're finally in much better hands than we've been for many years - they've appointed proper experienced football people, who've already planned and tasted some success.
Much of the angst of many on CL is based simply on they don't know what's happening behind the scenes.
But the management team know - and the rest of us, we'll all find out in due course.
I don’t have a problem with that one little bit, it’s a game of poker out there.

If we set aside Plymouth didn't fancy him as a Championship level defender, what about his performances last season indicate he isn't ready to make the step up in level? We still need to bring in a left sided centre back to compete with him though, which I’m sure we will do0

There is no room for "Giving him a chance" "Repaying his loyalty" unfortunately if a player is not good enough and we can afford to replace, then replace.

Just want to mention the goalie linked again, Noel Törnqvist.
I read the article and the linked clubs and for those that didn't the clubs are Leeds, Parma, Empoli and Cremonese.
The journalist, Alfredo Pedullà who shared the article is apparently very reputable, so the interest might actually be genuine.
The transfer fee isn't too outrageous. The Swedish club are asking for 22 million Krona, which equates to roughly 1.7 million pounds, isn't a crazy fee for a keeper of that quality looking at his stats*
Here is the wording and translated:
"Uppgifter: Leeds United, Charlton Athletic, Parma Calcio, Empoli FC och US Cremonese är intresserade av Noel Törnqvist, 23. Mjällby AIF uppges kräva omkring 22 miljoner kronor för målvakten.📰Alfredo Pedullá (🇮🇹)"
"Details: Leeds United, Charlton Athletic, Parma Calcio, Empoli FC and US Cremonese are interested in Noel Törnqvist, 23. Mjällby AIF are said to be demanding around 22 million kronor for the goalkeeper.📰Alfredo Pedullá (🇮🇹)"1 -
The bad news is, I had a look at all those Serie A teams salaries, incomes etc, and they of course trump ours, in particular Empoli & Parma of the 3 Italian sides. Leeds of course we won't compete with in a straight shootout.
It is a nice link, and it is something different, but just shows how once again we will need to 'break' the wage structure to secure a player like that. It looks like we can match the Allsvenskan sides salaries in the upper echelon, so he might even be on a pay rise coming here, but if any of those other clubs are interested we don't really stand a chance.

As per usual, I'm ITK regarding some signings that are semi-imminent as in it could be tomorrow or equally we may not get it(or them) over the line until just before the deadline but can't say anything more as I don't want to give away too much as can't be seen to betraying confidential information given to me in confidence. However I will announce the signing(s) shortly after the club does so that you are all aware that I was ITK the whole time.
However, I will say this with 100% certainty when (or if) the signing(s) are announce you will be shocked (or content) with the quality (or lack of) of the player(s) we bring (or don't) to the club.30 -

Sounds like they will definitely look to sell this summer, it's just how many clubs are willing to spend the rumoured 5 million on a 27 year old who has only performed at League 1 and 2 level.
I am of the view he would be a great signing and I think he would do really well here, but that's a huge fee, and it ain't my money.0 -

I too have been privy to some whispers—nothing concrete, of course, but more concrete than abstract, though at times frustratingly abstract in their concreteness, if you follow. Suffice to say, something may or may not be happening, and if it does or doesn’t, you heard (or didn’t hear) it from me first.
Now I can’t say what I know or even if I know what I can’t say, because to say it would be to know it, and to know it might be to say too much. But rest assured, I’ll be keeping my ear to the ground and my eyes on the skies, ready to confirm what cannot yet be denied, the moment it’s no longer deniable (or confirmable, depending on outcomes beyond all reasonable prediction).
When the club makes their move—which may be imminent, delayed, or cancelled entirely—you’ll look back on this thread and say “He knew something… or at the very least suspected nothing,” and in many ways, isn’t that what being ITK is all about?
So yes, buckle up (or down), because what’s coming (or not coming) will either exceed or completely miss expectations in ways that only time, or a lack of it, will tell.

I always think keepers are worth spending a bit on. Arguably the most important position and at 23, we could get some great mileage out of him.
Anyway, sounds like a pipe dream as things stand.0
