A child has allegedly fallen in to the Thames at the Woolwich ferry with a major search underway now in case anyone local is wondering why all the activity.

Really hoping for a good outcome.
Not looking good. She went in on the north side of the river. News reports say local ambulance crews have been stood down, as the search continues.

I remember seeing a man jump off London Bridge many years ago. We were too far away to stop him, but ran to the spot and threw in one of the lifebuoys from the bridge. Unfortunately he was nowhere to be seen. Police arrived and told us the current is so strong that anyone going in there is unlikely to surface until well after Tower Bridge.

I did wonder. They had four boats and a helicopter searching.

When i was in the LFB i served for a time on the fireboat, when we were called out to jumpers we used to literally chase them whatever way the tide was going, unfortunately it was very rarely a good outcome, the speed of the tide on the Thames is unreal.

I have to admit that that day was a real wake up call to the power of the river.

Discussions about the royal isis back on page 31. A lot older than 1950 as stated by the murkydepths, if I have read accounts correctly.

    @Raith_C_Chattonell said in October 2021, (among other things);

"The ferries Iris and Daffodil, built in 1906, took part in the top secret attack on Zeebrugge, Belgium, on April 23, 1918, which aimed to prevent German U-boats from attacking Allied shipping in the English Channel and the south west approaches to the UK."

Sad ending in Woolwich if this is the same vessel (and not just inherited the name).

I wonder if it is the same people that did the same to a delivery driver outside my place just over a week ago.

    Hmm it's a shithole but I wouldn't say it's Tottenham levels

Pretty sad that some people have nothing better to do than to try and rubbish Woolwich - hopefully it makes them feel better.

Westminster has the highest crime rate in London and Greenwich doesn't even make the top 10.

    Most of it here!

This bloke does some decent videos on Greater London, and has finally got round to doing Woolwich. He misses out some bits, but it's decent enough -

The bloke singing is a busker called Terry St Clair, he's channel worth a visit too if you like a bit of English folk music

Looks like they may have found the body of the young girl who went missing near the Thames.

    What a sad story....

Looks decent, hopefully the Woolwich exchange development finally gets off the ground and we can finally marry the royal arsenal development (which is lovely) with the rest of the town. Add to that the students halls being built and the Elizabeth line station, affordable homes (compared to the rest of London) I think the place could change in the next 10 years.

Good article. Many thanks for posting @clive

Getting to grips with an anti-social element remains a key issue for the author. Anyone on here want to confess?

I see they have knocked down the Public Toilets and replaced them with a cafe , no public toilet in woolwich that i can think of ? . I think the shop owners will need to stock up on a few gallons of disinfectant to keep their door ways clean.

I worked on the High Pavement, on a veg stall as a teenager. This was back in the late 60/ early 70s.
It was a proper community, both stall holders and boys. But Woolwich was brilliant to be brought up in. Some real good times, wouldn’t swap my upbringing for the world.
From Manzes Pie and Mash, to the Wimpy in Thomas St. To the Earl of Chatham, The Castle.
Remember being chased by some Greasers after humming the Laurel and Hardy song behind one of their girlfriend. Did Powis St in about 20 seconds!!

I think we may be of a similar age and I agree that Woolwich was a great place back then.

I am pretty sure we knew each other Bob, I think we went to school together, first of all let me apologise for the teenager that was me.
I pretty much a pain in the arse to all and sundry.
I wish I could return to Woolwich of my youth to put a few things right and enjoy it all over again!
