Nathan Jones speculation - Cawley says indications are no chance Jones going to Cardiff (p20)

Think this is natural tbf, Jones has achieved something with us so is in credit in the footballing world, has expressed a desire to manage Cardiff before.
Whether there's legs in this or not I imagine we'll now probably have the same rumours/conversation every 6 months when Cardiff change managers.

The wage budget is currently at least less than half every other team in the Championship. Without significant investment, Charlton could come straight back down. Whereas, he could lead Cardiff City straight back up & have double or more his current budget when back in the Championship. He certainly doesn’t lack belief in his abilities. But is pretty fragile ego wise. He may think the season could be a struggle & Charlton fans will quickly be on his back again. Whereas at Cardiff City he could play the home boy hero turning the club around.Again, not saying that is the case at all. But it’s what the post on the Plymouth forum suggests (oh the irony 😂). And nothing would surprise me in football. Nothing.
i have no idea what the playing budget is likely to be next season, but I don’t see the budget in 24/25 as any kind of guide either. All I am saying is that they seem like businessmen, first and foremost. They’ve gone to a lot of effort to make it known that they are about sustainability & cloth cutting. That is to say, I do not think they will be like the Stoke City or Millwall owners, willing to essentially write off losses out of love, no matter how big or simply just to stay competitive. Fans are expected to pay the going rate. The academy is expected to provide some gems to sell. The scouts are expected to unearth some rough diamonds to polish & make a profit on and Jones is expected to a create a team greater than the sum of its parts. And to be fair, that is how it should be. But none of us know how constrained the wage & transfer budget will be, when the club aren’t currently generating significant income from player sales. Ie when it is all on the owners. How much of the tv money will be pumped into the squad? If the incoming player stats for last season’s promoted clubs is anything to go by… all of it! Yet, I cannot see the club bringing in 15+ players. But who knows. Jones may have outlined that he needs to overhaul the squad with x amount of new players & the board may say no, we were only looking at y amount. All speculation though. But that is why forums exist. You’re right to say last season’s budget is no guide to this season’s. But we do know that it needs to be at least doubled to catch up with the likes of Preston, a club that are sniffing around Small. Doubling it doesn’t guarantee success. But that isn’t the debate (for others who reference Jones’ success at Luton v failure at Stoke). I am just stating the bolded part as a reality of Championship football. We have hands off owners who are not running the business day to day - they may sign off on ST pricing but to be honest I doubt they have a view on whether £20, £50 or £90 is the right increase in the AC Stand, especially as the marginal revenue next season is not very much.
Charlton had the lowest Championship playing budget in 2019/20 and were relegated, on the final day, by an unlikely goal scored elsewhere. We can debate the part played by Lyle Taylor, lockdown, injuries, Southall and Macauley Bonne, but the margin of failure was tiny despite the discrepancy in the playing budget.
This might lead to the conclusion that you can wing it, but I would be reasonably certain that a player budget which was marginally higher would have kept us up, in that year, which was the limit of RD’s interest anyway.
These guys clearly want more. They are unlikely to want to be a Championship-L1 yo-yo club. But as above much depends on the quality of advice they receive. Methven and Scott having gone will help. What is certain is that forgoing the central income in the Championship by getting relegated again is completely foolish, not least because it necessarily defers a shot at the Premier League where the real money is. Hopefully there are now fewer voices in their ears telling them they can cut corners.29 -

Jones will come back from holiday and carry on.
No plans have to be altered, Chapple will be working away, deals will be set up.
And the club would be mad to make any statement because 1. Those that believe the clickbait nonsense will say "no smoke without fire" and 2. they will then have to respond to every other bit of nonsense on social media.
It is typical that the Cardiff ITK guy saying Jones ISN'T ON THE SHORTLIST story was almost ignored but any bad news is lapped up.
Far too sensible, Henners - as a retired man now you are supposed to talk bollocks. I know I do!2 -
Big Ange is getting the sack. I'd happily get him in or Rooney. Rooney would get us to play the Charlton way16

I was trying to find that quote where Jones said he didn't join a league one club, he joined Charlton and I noticed this.
Bit off topic, but it reads a bit like a bit of a back handed compliment? 😂

If there's really nothing in this rumour, I reckon either the club or NJ himself should make an appropriate press statement without further delay. If it's true, God help us.1

I do however expect the club to give a statement tomorrow to either confirm or deny there has been interest from Cardiff.

The only way this ends for some is when both Cardiff and Plymouth have both announced new managers that aren’t Nathan Jones. Until then, some won’t believe anything that is said.4 -

Do clubs usually do press releases to inform of ongoing talks? I could be wrong but I'd only expect to see something if a deal has been struck. I think losing Jones isn't losing a manager, it's losing a culture and belief that the players, staff and fans have bought into - and has now been proven to be effective. Replacing that with a manager with a rebuild season in arguably the most competitive league in football is a step too far for me. Hope it's just paper talk, originating from those two dodgy sources who may have been told the club want Jones, and nothing more than that.7

I will only believe it is true when “ Jones seen in Lidl Cardiff, buying a trumpet and an arc welder, and a jar of beetroot “ floats out on Cardiff forum.4

Jones leaving would be a disaster for both him at Cardiff and us..
He said last week we are already 3 weeks behind. Sorting out compensation and recruiting a new manager would take weeks and weeks.
Cardiff need to act quickly for the same reason. They've been without a permanent manager since late April.
They need to get a new manager in ASAP so they can identify and bring in the players he wants.
Don't forget Jones wouldn't be afforded the free hit he got with us in his first half season. Cardiff and especially Tan will expect results and quickly.
I really don't thinks Jones will see the worth in it at this very moment.0
