Deadline Day from Pg.641 - Summer 2025 Charlton Athletic Transfer Rumours

Thanks for that snippet but I would have thought our spending plans would be kept very much between the owners, Nathan Jones and a couple of others like Phil Chapple. For a start until Sunday we or anybody else had no clue as to our league destination for next season. I know Jones has said it’s the same list whatever but I don’t fully buy that. Interesting though._MrDick said:I’ve no inside information on who we might be signing this summer. But, on the way out of Wembley, I was eavesdropping on a conversation between my mate and a coach in the academy (who he knows) and the word on the street is we won’t be splashing too much cash in the summer window - we will be spending some. But interestingly, we have come under pressure, presumably from parents, to sell some of our Crown Jewels in the younger age groups. He said 3 U13 players had gone to Newcastle, Arsenal and Everton for combined fees of c£1.3m. Just passing on what I heard ..1 -
Are you even allowed to "trade" players that young? Surely they have to be a bit older and have a contract?Athletico Charlton said:

This is part of the problem. I believe they can sign for whoever they want and we get compensation. If we were Cat 1 that compensation would be higher. At the moment we’re potentially a great, cheap feeder option for bigger teams. I’m actually surprised it doesn’t happen moreYTS1978 said:

Nope. Follow Charlton, as dad’s team. Have soft spot for Millwall, as mum, grandad, uncles, cousins, other half support them. So yeah… I don’t hate them like many Charlton fans. Which is why I would say I am more a follower, than fan(antic)!Todds_right_hook said:

Ah right, so compensation the same as older players who could sign a pro contract, but choose not to and move on.fenaddick said:

Im just really surprised about 13yr olds moving between clubs for money. But I guess that shouldn't really surprise me!0 -
We won’t be spending £4 million on any players. Possibly not on all our signings that command a fee.Ferryman said:

Genuine question. How does a thirteen year old up sticks and move from South London to eg Newcastle ? Does his family get moved which to me seems ridiculous and totally unlikely. How does it even work ?YTS1978 said:

Which is fair enough. I’m just not that tribal. In fact I enjoy learning about all clubs. The only club I really dislike is Palace. Because I just don’t see them as a ‘proper’ football club. MK Dons I try to ignore. Every other club I can find something I like about them.ShootersHillGuru said:All my wife’s family are Millwall and I hate them. Millwall not her family.0 -

And I'm sure the player himself would be looking to step up a level.ShootersHillGuru said:
Didn’t they turn down a £1 million bid for him in January ? With one year they’ll be a rush for him in January and a £ million then might do it but they’ll be a lot of interest in him .PWADDICK said:

Def the type of player we should be going for though
It’s going to be bloody tough without 6/7 real quality additions imo
as well as the team did this season, this is a massive step up. Godden has been class and is absolutely worth keeping, but Coventry, a competitive team in the championship felt it was the right time to move him on. Similar Docherty. I like both of them, but thinking 6 years on from when we were last in the championship, it seems like it’s even harder. You can’t argue with NJ’s approach and how it’s got us out this league and the focus on clean sheets, but I’m thinking, replicating that type of approach with the current players against some of the teams we’re gonna be up against 🤯 - going to be very tough0 -
Sorry, I meant they paid £4M for him, and believe would accept a significantly lower offer now it’s gone pear shaped for them.ShootersHillGuru said:

Ages ago they’d have been put in digs with a family but no idea what happens now. Iwan Roberts and Craig Bellamy were both on the books at Norwich despite being Welsh sticks in my mind, must have stayed with someone surelyShootersHillGuru said:

I still think we could do a lot, lot, worse.
Comfortable on the ball, could play in a back 5, strong, quick, and most importantly is a leader.
One off season doesn't define a player, and he only turns 30 in June. Very experienced player to have.
I'd personally be happy to see him here.2 -

I expect cat 1 academy and the club as well would have accomodation specific for these types of scenarios. There are safe guarding concerns with someone that young away from their family. I'd be surprised if this was not the case.2 -
My son's mate plays for Derby and lives in digs, but he's 18yrs old. God knows how it works for younger kids though.fenaddick said:

Paudie O'Connor another one, very similar stats to Lloydy and a beast in a back 3/5.
Out of contract.
Another out of contract player is Nathan Baxter. Wages wouldn't be too high, would be good competition for Mannion and would have a chance of claiming the no.1.7 -

Is he better than Jones or Ramsay ? Then no, thanks . Any players brought in this season have to be better than what we have . The only vague exception to that is (better) competition for Mannion and Edwards because they currently have none .Braziliance said:https://x.com/SportsPeteO/status/1923069998588666060?t=X6IZ8iz4yii5q0qsROtk-w&s=19

May as well try to sign a plodding Stevenage or Rotherham defender instead...2 -
What happens with the defence and especially CBs will be interesting. I find it hard to imagine we’ll pay good wages for someone to be LJs back up, and I don’t see Ramsay being replaced unless we sell him. We’ve also got Zach Mitchell pushing for more involvement.Braziliance said:https://x.com/SportsPeteO/status/1923069998588666060?t=X6IZ8iz4yii5q0qsROtk-w&s=19

What it definitely is though is an area we can trust NJ to get right. There’s a balance to be found between having enough experience, not using up budget on cover that we could do with higher up the pitch and having a pathway for our young defenders and WBs.2 -
The amount of money flying around at the top level I think a lot of things that seem ridiculous probably happen. I know that top PL clubs will offer to put kids through private education as part of signing them, it is really difficult for us to compete but we do so brilliantly of courseShootersHillGuru said:

But spending large amounts on a 13 year old is an enormous punt. Certainly take them on but I’d like to know how many thirteen year olds on clubs books go on and make it.NabySarr said:

We were fighting off Everton for one of our top academy boys. He’s a smart lad from a very successful family who are not likely to be swayed by shiny things and more money. He’s also at a very good school down here and it’s unlikely that would be matched oop north.
im hopeful we can keep hold of him and make it known We aren’t easy targets any more.34 -
I think a LCB will definitely come in, and that will probably be our cover for Jones, as either the new signing or Gillesphey could play in the middle like we have done this year with McIntyre. Think Z. Mitchell will get a chance in pre-season and hopefully show he's good enough to cover Ramsay and Jones roles. Alex Mitchell might be one that moves on, but also might stick around as then we'd have 6 players so 2 per positionScoham said:

Saw on X earlier that Villa had signed a 6yr old they identified in Africa which if true is absolutely mental9
