Thierry Small - signed a 4 year deal with Preston (p36)

Maybe in his best short term financial interest, but I wouldn't personally say it was in his overall best interest longterm.Woodwork said:
If Derby County, for example, came in, it sounds like they could easily double his wages. And that would be in his best interests really.Swisdom said:as I’ve said before the difference now is Thierry has an agent working for Thierry not himself. John Fortune is likely to be thinking what’s best for Thierry which is probably to stay at Charlton whereas his previous agent would literally have sold him to the highest bidder.
However the last I heard we were paying him absolute peanuts which doesn’t bode well because I’m pretty sure ANY offer will be a significant increase and may turn his head. We really should have got him to sign last summer or cashed in!
You often hear talk about players moving for more money like it's a foregone conclusion, but there are plenty of cases where a player has stayed put, be it long or short term, despite being offered more elsewhere. And it’s not just in football — you see it in every work environment. Some people clearly have opportunities to earn more money if they go elsewhere or step up the ladder, yet they choose to stay put for a variety of other reasons.2 -
If he doesn’t back himself to get into one of the weaker Championship sides, he may not have the mentality to make it at that level & yes, should stay in League One, even if we go up.MuttleyCAFC said:
Yes he could watch their games from the stands with CBT.Woodwork said:

be great if he re signs for next year but all i really care about now is that he is fit and ready for tomorrow as our squad doesn't have a replacement - its well documented how 1 dimensional we become when only TC is able to run at defences - i genuinely think its game over if he is injured1
-
It can sometimes be a bit more complicated than that. He can have some poor games with us and we stick with him. He can have a manager that doesn't play to his strengths or fancy him. He has a solid base here and a championship offer will be less attractive if we make him an offer after going up. He will expect us not to take the piss with that and if we had yellow teeth still in charge, we would absolutely lose him but I suspect he may be staying.Woodwork said:

winning will be easier if he plays at least an hourDOUCHER said:be great if he re signs for next year but all i really care about now is that he is fit and ready for tomorrow as our squad doesn't have a replacement - its well documented how 1 dimensional we become when only TC is able to run at defences - i genuinely think its game over if he is injured0 -
Maybe the other 2, but the Bauer situation isn't dissimilar to what could have been with Lloyd Jones (a better cb IMO), but instead we signed him up in February, so think times are a little better now.CafcSCP said:Regardless of the league, it depends on what is on the table from Charlton.
Djiksteel, Aribo and Bauer all left. Obviously they were RD days but I think they’d have left regardless.4 -
Lets approach the elephant in the room - No excuses now Thierry, sign that new deal... We're a Championship club, you know you love it here!!15

This will be tough to swallow , especially if he goes to BermondseyForeverAddickted said:Lets approach the elephant in the room - No excuses now Thierry, sign that new deal... We're a Championship club, you know you love it here!!1 -
I'd be surprised if he didn't sign a new deal now. I entirely understand that he wanted, indeed needed to be playing Championship football next season, but we can offer him that now. We're by far the best option in his career for next season, a step up in an environment where he's comfortable and loved.5

I think that’s true now - guaranteed to play every week. But .. if someone else offers to treble his wageskillerandflash said:I'd be surprised if he didn't sign a new deal now. Cawley has already squashed that rumour thankfullywmcf123 said:

If he goes, Nathan and Phil will find someone better and sign them. It’s Thierry’s choice.13
-
I suppose it also depends on if he’s already agreed something elsewhere.0
-
That's the issue for me, he'll be in demand from well established Championship clubs who will see him as a great punt given his age and the fact he'll only cost compensation. They'll be able to offer him much better wages.wmcf123 said:

Hope I'm wrong but I still think he'll leave.2 -
Still think he's gone. But would be massive if he did decide to renew.0
-
Snide if he leaves now1
-
Of course I would like him to stay but its worth remembering that he won’t find as much space and freedom in The Championship as he does in league one. Will he be as effective ? I doubt it. He’s young and I could easily be wrong but I’m not convinced he’s a desperate loss should he decide to depart.2

Spoke to an old boy on the train that said he had heard Thierry wanted to see if we would be promoted and believed he'd sign another year as we were. Fingers crossed.7

Was walking down Wembley way about 5.30, fans asked him if he was signing on and nervously laughed! Personally I think he will go home and back to Brum. Will be gutted!0

Birmingham can and will sign better. They don't need to shop cheap.bromdog said:Was walking down Wembley way about 5.30, fans asked him if he was signing on and nervously laughed! Personally I think he will go home and back to Brum. Will be gutted!9 -

West Brom would be more 'back home' I guess.bromdog said:Was walking down Wembley way about 5.30, fans asked him if he was signing on and nervously laughed! Personally I think he will go home and back to Brum. Will be gutted!2 -
Yeah either or, he’s got a couple of midlands clubs to chose from. Doesn’t financial rules change in Champ too? Obviously a low risk free signing for someone0
-
He goes elsewhere and I think he can expect to sit on the bench. He stays with us and I’d reasonably expect him to carry on where he’s left off. He’s exciting but frustratingly unproductive in his crossing and decisions. His choice and I expect him to go.5
-
Think he'll see the offers from higher up in the Championship being 5-10k (at least) higher a week than our offer and he'll be off.ShootersHillGuru said:He goes elsewhere and I think he can expect to sit on the bench. He'd best staying here. He blows hot and cold with decision making and that will improve with game time1
-
If he goes, he will leave on a high and get a cheer from me, he has been a big part of us turning our fortunes around.North Lower Neil said:

Like all, I really hope he stays, but I can totally see him playing for West Brom. It seems to fit.
He's not irreplaceable though and as others have alluded to, I totally back our manager to replace him with at least equal talent if not better.1 -
He won't stay. He doesn't want to play right wing, he wants to play full back but can't get in the team in that position. He will go looking for a full back position at another (Championship if possible) club.0
-
I love the bloke but he's not irreplaceable. More concerned about keeping hold of Ramsay

WBA will come down to who their new manager is , appears Ryan Mason is in talks.RC_CAFC said:

Whatever he chooses has had a cracking season. Hope he stays. If he goes he will always be part of the team that got us promotion. For that he has my thanks.8
