  • With TS missing the last few games, I can't help my glass-half-empty head probably reading far too much into this, but here's my headspace conspirosy theory:

With his contract coming to an end, he's already told NJ he'll be leaving in the summer. NJ naturally wants players out there that will give 100% and prepared to go over the top, (Blackadder style) but fears that Small will hold back, in fear of getting injured. Let's also remember that before his "injury" he was hardly pulling up any trees for the last few matches he played in.

I'm sure I'm just bing a nervous ninny and seeing things that simply are not there, but I can't shake that small crumb that could be right.  :/

Saying that, I still thing a half-hearted TS is better than no TS.
Except Tennai, the player he replaced Small with, is also out of contract at the end of the season and will almost certainly be moving on. Not much point replacing a player heading to pastures new with a player heading to pastures new

Except that Tennai in an interview said he'd love his career to continue at Charlton. Small has not. Also, I believe it's been said on CL that Small has an academy set up somewhere in the Midlands. So, he might be looking for a move up there anyway...
  • Small was lapping up the chants and applause from the Charlton fans yesterday as he warmed up during the game.

Question: who would sign TS if Charlton don't get promoted?

The background to this is simple: if Charlton are in L1 next season, the best place for him to be playing, week in, week out, is for promotion-chasing Charlton. Which bigger club (bigger than Charlton, that is) would be looking to sign a player that's just failed to get promoted from L1?

I can't help thinking that, if Charlton were to have to face another season in L1, then Charlton is exactly where he should be playing.
I think there are plenty of Championship clubs who’ll see him as initially back up but with a higher ceiling. Plenty.
Maybe. And, honestly, I hope the Championship team he plays for next season is Charlton. But, would he really be considered for enough in a season in which he'd failed to get promoted from the third division, would there really be Championship clubs desperate to make a gamble?

From my point of view, he'd be better off playing week in week out for Charlton - in L1 or the Championship - next season, than playing half the games in the season for Preston or Hull.

I've no doubt Tennai wants to stay but there's no way Jones is dropping one of our most talented players for a player he's barely played this season and will most likely be releasing shortly, and doing that for potentially key games in our season.

I don’t think anyone really disagrees with that, but footballers by nature are confident in themselves. Outside of the obvious financial benefits, Small will back himself to break into championship sides so that isn’t going to put him off moving

Tennai unfortunately offers us nothing going forward and when Small doesn’t play TC is our only attacking threat - A semi fit Small should start of Tennai.

I think he's probably off either way tbh, even if we go up a more established Championship club will probably think it's a cheap punt for a good young player, and they'll be able to offer better wages.

Even he does go it was a good signing - young player on a free, 18 good months and then we still get a bit of compensation due to his age.  Need to be making more signings in that mould.

the club has also stated that they have been in talks with small, that’s why he might be silent

watson on the other hand is very likely to be moving on and maybe hasnt heard from the club and is making noise as a reminder of his existence

Contrary to a lot on here I actually quite like Watson. He's not as dynamic as Small, but he's tidy, can defend and gets up and down the pitch. He's no world beater, but I think Jones likes him too. Was probably the most improved player last season under NJ but has been a bit unlucky with injuries this season. You can see with that run at wrexham or that pass against Burton that he has something about him. Not saying I'd sign him up for next year. But he's contributing at the moment and seems like a decent lad.
I think because he's more disciplined defensively, it allows more scope for Ramsay to get forward, and influence the game more...

I'm with you on this. I think his main problem is that while he's perfectly decent he's in and around the likes of Small, Edwards and Ramsay and those comparisons are never going to flatter him.

He probably is the third or fourth best fullback we've got but only because the others are just that good.
  • I can't believe Small is even in the same conversation as Watson. Watson will be off in the summer because we won't want to keep him whatever division we are in. We will want to keep Small. The reason for this is bleeding obvious.

Agree with the comments above. There is no comparison between the two. Small is clearly the better option. I was just pointing out that Watson has contributed in recent weeks, so isn't necessarily the epitomy of "bang average". I mean Thierry was pretty average for a few games prior to his injury in fairness. But it was only when he was out the side that it was so noticeable how it affected our playing style. Particularly with Tyreece getting doubled up on the other wing.

Edit. Maybe i should have added my comment to the Tennai Watson Done Deal thread so as not to offend anyone haha! COYA!
  • I don't rate him as a full back either. There are players that can come in and do a job. A good job even, but if you keep playing them, a mistake is always not far away. Watson is one of those players IMO.
  • Hes perfectly fine as a backup in League 1. Won't be first choice for a club chasing primotion nor will he be good enough in the Championship
  • Regardless of the league, it depends on what is on the table from Charlton.
Djiksteel, Aribo and Bauer all left. Obviously they were RD days but I think they’d have left regardless.

Wrexham, they need a James McC***n replacement, he gets to play week in week out in the Championship and a pay rise, even if we go up can still see that happening, the Disney Hollywood bollocks is a good catch for the younger players.

as I’ve said before the difference now is Thierry has an agent working for Thierry not himself.  John Fortune is likely to be thinking what’s best for Thierry which is probably to stay at Charlton whereas his previous agent would literally have sold him to the highest bidder.

However the last I heard we were paying him absolute peanuts which doesn’t bode well because I’m pretty sure ANY offer will be a significant increase and may turn his head. We really should have got him to sign last summer or cashed in!
If Derby County, for example, came in, it sounds like they could easily double his wages. And that would be in his best interests really.

We activated his 1 year extension this time last year and said we were negotiating a longer deal, so it’s not as if we didn’t try, but as you say his agent likely wasn’t helping.

    https://www.charltonafc.com/news/charlton-trigger-thierry-smalls-extension-clause

We should be due compensation due to his age, so when you factor that in we wouldn’t have made much more by cashing in. Selling him would have meant one more player to replace, and it’s turned out moving him to the right was key to our turnaround in form.

Overall I think we did the right thing in keeping him, even if we don’t manage to hold on to him for next season. It’s got to the point from his perspective he may as well wait and see what division we’ll be in, so I can understand why it’s probably out negotiations on hold for now.

Yes he could watch their games from the stands with CBT.
