    Florence will be fine, Rome however - we were there during Pope Francis' selection and the city was dead. It was lovely and peaceful. Until his convoy nearly ran us over by Villa Borghese

    In the scheme of Popes, was a decent Pope. First Jesuit and Latin American Pope, with focus on helping the poor, did challenge some of the hierarcy of the Catholic Church initially.

    so for us and DoctorCharlton, we are both arriving a few days after the 9 days of mourning (which includes the funeral). And Shrek and I leave on day 16, the day after the first possible day of Conclave

    According to this Catholic website this is what has been done since he was made Pope. I'm not a Catholic or religious, but it is still sad news to hear of the death of a good man.

    Because I’m going on a cruise which stops at Italy in June and they have put a message out today for those doing Italian excursions this week ( Rome , Piza and Florence) that the excursions are cancelled and most establishments in the ports are likely to be closed for at least a week.

    So I contacted out hotel who said:

    'We can reassure you that the hotel will remain open and fully operational during your stay from May 3rd to 7th. Local restaurants and visitor attractions are also expected to remain open as usual. While a period of mourning has been declared, no specific restrictions or closures have been officially announced at this time.'
