I remember seeing a man jump off London Bridge many years ago. We were too far away to stop him, but ran to the spot and threw in one of the lifebuoys from the bridge. Unfortunately he was nowhere to be seen. Police arrived and told us the current is so strong that anyone going in there is unlikely to surface until well after Tower Bridge.0 -

When i was in the LFB i served for a time on the fireboat, when we were called out to jumpers we used to literally chase them whatever way the tide was going,unfortunately it was very rarely a good outcome,the speed of the tide on the Thames is unreal.TelMc32 said:

Discussions about the royal isis back on page 31. A lot older than 1950 as stated by the murkydepths, if I have read accounts correctly.

Westminster has the highest crime rate in London and Greenwich doesn't even make the top 10.

Looks decent, hopefully the Woolwich exchange development finally gets off the ground and we can finally marry the royal arsenal development (which is lovely) with the rest of the town. Add to that the students halls being built and the Elizabeth line station, affordable homes (compared to the rest of London) I think the place could change in the next 10 years.4

I see they have knocked down the Public Toilets and replaced them with a cafe , no public toilet in woolwich that i can think of ? . I think the shop owners will need to stock up on a few gallons of disinfectant to keep their door ways clean.0

I worked on the High Pavement, on a veg stall as a teenager. This was back in the late 60/ early 70s.
It was a proper community, both stall holders and boys. But Woolwich was brilliant to be brought up in. Some real good times, wouldn’t swap my upbringing for the world.From Manzes Pie and Mash, to the Wimpy in Thomas St. To the Earl of Chatham, The Castle.Remember being chased by some Greasers after humming the Laurel and Hardy song behind one of their girlfriend. Did Powis St in about 20 seconds!!5 -

I think we may be of a similar age and I agree that Woolwich was a great place back then.
I pretty much a pain in the arse to all and sundry.I wish I could return to Woolwich of my youth to put a few things right and enjoy it all over again!0
