Charlton Athletic are pleased to confirm the signing of experienced goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis.

The 34-year-old joins on a short-term deal until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Manager Nathan Jones said: "Dean’s been training with us now for the last month following the injury to Ashley [Maynard-Brewer]. With the precarious nature of the emergency loan market, we felt it was better to sign someone who we’ve had in the environment and Dean’s done very well since coming here. He’s got real good experience, he’s fitted in with the group really well and he provides real good competition for what is already a good goalkeeping department."

Bouzanis added: "It’s an honour to be here and an opportunity that I’m looking forward to with this fantastic group that’s fighting at the right end of the table. Hopefully we can do something special come the end of the season."

Born in Sydney, Bouzanis moved to Liverpool at the age of 16 and featured for the Reds’ U18s and reserve side while also enjoying a loan stint with hometown club Sydney FC.

His senior debut came in the 2009/10 campaign during a loan spell at League Two side Accrington Stanley, where he impressed to earn a permanent move to Oldham Athletic. Bouzanis went on to make 51 appearances for the then-League One outfit.

Following spells with Greek side Aris FC, Carlisle United and Western Sydney Wanderers, the stopper established himself as Melbourne City’s number one and earned a clean sheet as the side beat Sydney FC in the 2016 FFA Cup final to lift the club’s first-ever trophy.

A season-long loan with Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle followed, before Bouzanis returned to England in August 2020 to join Sutton United.

The former Greece and Australia youth international kept 18 clean sheets during his debut season to help the U’s earn promotion to the EFL for the first time in the club’s 123-year-history.

Bouzanis featured 53 times during the following campaign as Sutton missed out on a play-off spot by just one point and finished as runners-up in the Papa Johns Trophy.

He joined Reading in the summer of 2022 to add competition to the Royals’ goalkeeping department.

Following loan spells at Sutton and Stevenage during the last two seasons, Bouzanis left Reading by mutual consent last month.

Sensible, but hopefully we never need him. Sorry Dean.

Worked out well the last time we had an Aussie-born keeper join for the run-in…
    It’s a sign I tell thee!

As long as it isn’t a sign Mannion is injured then no issues here

Better than paying him to not even be in the squad for 36 games.

Used to sign him as a decent young backup keeper in Football Manager 2008!

Hope he's a decent old backup keeper now.

I'm fine with that decision, having 3 senior keepers is a luxury at this level, so it makes sense to just bring a 3rd keeper in if you really need one.

If we had been 14th and going nowhere (up or down) I'm sure we wouldn't have bothered.

Maybe. It highlights however you have less choice in this scenario. Free agents only.

Wont be surprised if Ashley is out for the season, and they're being cautious - Whenever Nathan has been asked about him, he's been very relaxed about his absence and ensuring that Ash takes his time to recover. Its not an emergency signing, instead just a free transfer, so cant see it being because Mannion is injured (famous last words)

Think we must be approaching the deadline for signing free agents too so best to get it in while we can

I think it's more NJ wanting the security of a known face to fill in, rather than the panic of an emergency loan if Mannion wakes up with a fever or pulls a  muscle on Friday.

Sure, but do many teams have 3 experience gks kicking around all season ? He still might get zero minutes of game time yet, very much doubt we'd have bothered signing him at all if we were not in the position we are (table wise). Paying him 3k for 8 weeks, is better than paying him 3k pw for a year and be nowhere near the squad.

What's the criticism here? That we haven't been paying a third choice keeper who never plays all season? Which third choice keeper should we have gone for in the summer that we've agonisingly missed out on?

Clearly we needed to be in for the greatest quality name to market value ratio for our third keeper. So the obvious choice was Blondy Nna Noukeu

Agree to an extent. And of course my first comment was being facetious.

It’s always a gamble of course which way round you approach this. Players at the ready with cost or assume you can pick up someone when needed.

    So far it’s ok.

I think it’s probably more interesting he’s been with the team for a few weeks already. Definitely suggests AMB injury not going to fully resolve shortly.

Ash seems to pick up a serious injury per season. This is likely to halt his career as a Club's first choice goalie.

Seems sensible with AMB out for a while. Believe Bouzanis was the trialist GK in a recent u21 game. I remember thinking he seemed quite comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Seems very sensible to me. We needed cover and he has oodles of experience. No long term commitment so what’s not to like.

Reid has been decent for U21s, I wasn't unhappy with him as back-up.

Wow!  You hope it helps halt his career as a clubs first choice goalie?  Really?  Why?

As long as Deano Bouzanis can pull a rabbit out of the hat if Needed then this sounds like a good move.

He can play elsewhere. Just don't want calamity Jane in our goal, thank you very much.
