The £5 pint

Things like this reset the baseline though, so over time they manifest in price increases across the board (I’m not saying Spoons all of a sudden starts charging £9.40 a pint, but it won’t be charging £3 or whatever it is today).Radostanradical said:Is £9.40 really that expensive ? I'm sure there's a Wetherspoons or Sam Smiths open somewhere, if you don't want to pay £9.40 for a pint don't drink there ?0 -
We (2 couples) went to Plumpton races the other week....£26+ for two pints & 2 medium wines. Got of the train and straight into the local Spoons....more or less the same round and it was under £10.CAFCTrev said:I think we can all agree that the best place to get a pint these days both morally and monetarily is.....

I hate all the snobbery about Wetherspoons. Decent beer and cheap prices.
OK if you are with partner it's not a good idea, but with mates ideal.18 -
Mrs H don't mind it, food is OK and £14 for a bottle of house red (which is pretty decent) can't be scoffed at.bolloxbolder said:I hate all the snobbery about Wetherspoons. Decent beer and cheap prices.

Nothing wrong with a Wetherspoons. Decent priced, properly looked after beer and fairly priced food.bolloxbolder said:I hate all the snobbery about Wetherspoons. Decent beer and cheap prices.

If you're happy to pay £9.40 for a pint because that's not expensive to you, then you're likely not going to go to Weatherspoons.1

I did occasionally go in to them at the airport but now I'm a brewdog man if flying from Gatwick or just use the bar they have at City.Covered End said:If you're happy to pay £9.40 for a pint because that's not expensive to you, then you're likely not going to go to Weatherspoons.1 -
Did you know that the biggest selling draft at spoons is pepsi. The biggest selling drinks are tea and coffee.0

Tea and coffee is really good value pay for the mug and fill it as many times as you like....very popular with the older crowd.stop_shouting said:Did you know that the biggest selling draft at spoons is pepsi. The biggest selling drinks are tea and coffee.0 -

There’s a very obvious reason why a certain cohort of people knock spoons! I think they’re great and take my son there for breakfast fairly often.AFKABartram said:Latte, Cappuccino etc £1.56 with free refills.I have no idea why people ever want to knock this business, I can’t think of a single more customer value focused one1 -
Rather than the Alma, lets meet down the Woolwich Spoons on our next drink... see how long you last till we hot foot it over through the gates!AFKABartram said:Latte, Cappuccino etc £1.56 with free refills.I have no idea why people ever want to knock this business, I can’t think of a single more customer value focused one

Worth noting the price of beer isnt going up in pubs due to duty its to offset the cost of utilities with running a pubhousemate said:
Look on the bright side, if Rachel hadn't been so generous in the budget, it would be £9.41.se9addick said:Look on
That’s insane. How long until they just charge £9.40 at all times of the day?clive said:A central London pub is charging customers an extra £2 a pint after 22:00.
Before that time, patrons of O'Neill's on Wardour Street in Soho pay £7.40 for certain draught beers, with the same drink costing £9.40 after the cut-off.
Mitchells & Butlers, the pub group that owns the venue, said the policy reflected a request from the police and local council "that we increase prices after 10pm to a level generally in line with the late-night market".

Long time since I've been in a wetherspoons but my mate next door suggested going up to The Catherine Wheel on Henley for a curry and a couple of scoops last night. A cavernous place that was pretty busy on a chilly Thursday night.
The first round was three pints of JBH, a very pleasant light session bitter from Oakham. Cost of the round: a whopping £4:47.
Whole evening including return bus fare was less than £25.
Easy to knock Spoons, but the beer is usually interesting as well as cheap, the food is fine and I like most that they make the most of a lot of old buildings that otherwise would probably just be bulldozed. I still think Tim Martin is a knob head though.
Interesting clientele as well. I went for a wee before leaving and had no choice but to take a urinal next to an occupied one. The bloke muttered 'You've broken the rules' before shuffling off, still mumbling to himself. But I know what he meant.7 -
Once in the rank pissers on Plat 4 in London Bridge station…….IdleHans said:

I was at one end urinal and another geezer at the far end urinal was pissing like a racehorse. He was mid torrent when I started and was still jet washing when I had finished.“Blimey, you needed that. You’ve being going for ages” I said to him.I didn’t know that he was German, but he turned to me and replied in perfect Heir Flick tones…..
”I voz not avare zat I voz being timed”
He looked at me with distain as he walked past me and left without washing his hands.I still chuckle at that strange khazi interaction 😄11 -
I have tried the wine in wetherspoons pubs and the last few times it was rank. The food coffee and beer have always been surprisingly good and very cheap. Can get a bit rowdy on a friday night in newcastle for i stance but otherwise have no issue wirh wetherspoons0

A low for me in the city yesterday was paying £6.10 for a non-alcoholic can of Guinness Zero (and then having to open and pour it myself)7
-
£5 a pint at Zero Degrees, Blackheath (selected times) also £5 a pint (again at selected times) at Belushi's (outside Greenwich station).1

Roses in Woolwich Arsenal have beers below £5 (on match days can't speak for the rest of the week)1

Is that place still open? I thought it shut a while back.JustFloydRoad said:Roses in Woolwich Arsenal have beers below £5 (on match days can't speak for the rest of the week)0 -
Still open, we used it now since the bull closed. Same bloke owns it, it hasn’t changed in over 35 years.Off_it said:

The Anglesea Arms Woolwich is also under £5. However, like many others, its time has come and it will be closing its doors early January.1
