It wasn’t absolutely fine, it was the best match of the day ever. No commentary, no up their own arse analysis, just football!Chris_from_Sidcup said:Does it even need a host?
I remember the episode when there was that fuss with Lineker and as a result of the fall out, Shearer and Wright refused to go on that week. The episode had no commentary or pundits, just 20-25 minutes of the match highlights and it was absolutely fine.

All the matches for the programme should be written on little cylinders and placed near the edge of a shelf.
A cat should then be allowed on the shelf, and the matches shown in the order the cat knocks the cylinders to the floor.
This process could be recorded and edited before the broadcast and played at the beginning of the programme.3 -
I wouldn't be shocked if it was Lizzo or something.0

Do you remember how terrible Lineker was when he started, and everyone said he was an awful choice?1

I’m sick of these BBC employees talking politics and trying to influence government policy. Should be Jeremy Clarkson for me!5

I’d try to get Kelly Cates . Great personality and very knowledgeable and works for BBC Radio as well as occasionally for SKY2

I have no idea if she knows anything about football but if it's Orla Chennaoui I'll be fast forwarding the football to get to the chit chat...1

Almost certainly going to be a woman. After all this is the BBC would help if knows nothing about football, and believes the Premier Leauge has lots of Customers.3

As long as he or she hasn't got an annoying Scouse accent I'll be happy1

Given that the reality was 20-25 minutes of just the highlights only without any of the waffle before, during and after then yes i'd say it was absolutely fine.Bournemouth Addick said:

All about opinions of course, but my recollection was that we had a load of right wing (political) commentators and journos, most of whom has shown zero previous interest in football, pushing their anti-beeb agenda afterwards by pretending it was an amazing improvement.
The reality was it was a bit rubbish.
If you watch it for the opinions of Lineker, Shearer and Wright then yes i agree you'd have found it rubbish.1 -

I always found it baffling that the highest paid presenter for the BBC contributed to the part of the show that many would likely fast forward.People tune in to watch the football highlights. Lineker and co were just a side attraction to that. And I say that as someone who doesn’t have anything particular against him. Just cannot understand what really justified that amount of TV license money that could be used elsewhere.5

So obvious this thread was going to bring out all the "woke nonsense" commentary and jibes, but I would say Kelly Cates is a very good shout. Knows her stuff, and has the "child of football legend" factor that probably ties in well.
Would probably prefer Mark Chapman though, if it's still the same game/summary/punditry format trotted out as has been ritual for years and years.9 -

This, I go on Livescore and way before Match of the Day is on it links to a 3 minute highlight package. Can't imagine having to sit through the whole of match of the day, painfully long.ValleyGary said:I’m surprised it’s still going. I get the tradition but seeing as you can watch the goals pretty straight after the game, seems a bit pointless now.0 -

This TBH they oculd get a relatively unknown pay them something relatively cheap (90K or so) and i Guarantee viewing figures wouldn't dropMrWalker said:Someone cheap, please.2 -

You don’t have to sit through it, record and fast forward the analysis and punditsHuskaris said:

I don’t watch any live TV enabling me to fast forward the adverts3 -

This is the thing, there is a load of value to the BBC for MoTD, but the way it's consumed is different now. It probably does really good numbers on iPlayer, however if you want the goals at 5.15 you can get them on your phone before you've got out of the traffic around the ground.Huskaris said:

Same with the hysterics over the removal of the football results on 5 Live, you can get them on your phone, Livescore, Fotmob, your betting app does a better job of getting you the scores then anyone reading them with perfect diction on 5 Live.2 -

Maybe you should consider that maybe people don’t want to watch on a phone or look up scores on a phone.Rothko said:

Why is it so incomprehensible to prefer to watch highlights (not just goals) on a large screen, or prefer to have someone present the scores to you, whilst relaxing on the sofa?4 -
Ah crap I’m too late, everyone else already made the diversity jokes4

I hadn't realised they'd stopped reading out the football scores at 5pm, but the number of people genuinely affected must have been tinyRothko said:

Football highlights are different though. I like to watch a proper roundup of the action, with some analysis of the main points. The same applies to most sports, where highlights shows still get respectable viewing numbers.1
