I remember the episode when there was that fuss with Lineker and as a result of the fall out, Shearer and Wright refused to go on that week. The episode had no commentary or pundits, just 20-25 minutes of the match highlights and it was absolutely fine.

All about opinions of course, but my recollection was that we had a load of right wing (political) commentators and journos, most of whom has shown zero previous interest in football, pushing their anti-beeb agenda afterwards by pretending it was an amazing improvement.
Whoever they choose, it should be someone young enough to do it for another 20/25 years.
My outside choice would be Darren Bent, he speaks eloquently enough when he's been a pundit before, is a pretty inoffensive person, and he's only 40 so can do it for ages if he so chooses

It was absolutely fine. We’ve had multiple comments about pundits on threads, criticising their waffle. Some of those being on MotD, so they wouldn’t be missed by plenty.
