To be fair to the bloke, his positioning and nous is streets above National League, but if those around him don't understand what he wants then it just looks rubbish to those of us watching. The ethos of Southend teams over the last 2/3 seasons has been high press and quick one touch triangles. Macauley has yet to show us the hard work necessary for that style of football. So, thinking about it again, I reckon we will get well and truly rinsed by you Div 1 chaps. I was checking who was around when we last met, and everyone on the pitch has now gone except Jason Demitriou who hung up his boots this season and has now moved over to our coaching team. I really miss our trips to the Valley with the friendly policemen on the big horses, and, of course, your X Ray team that always felt it necessary to carry out some of our more tanked up supporters. Truthfully the NL is absolutely a terrible place to be, but we only have ourselves to blame.paulsturgess said:
He will almost certainly shine against us, but there absolutely _is not_ a good player in thereRootshallbloke said:Afternoon Addicks, first things first, The Forresters is long gone along will all of it's delights. The North Stand will almost certainly be your area, and capacity is 800 max at the moment because the old girl that is Roots Hall is more than a bit crumbly. Our new consortium owners are working their nuts off to renovate the ground but I fear our cup game will be too early for North Stand improvements. I'm really hopeful that Mr Bonne will take his opportunity to shine for 90 minutes and show us that there is a good player in there just waiting his moment (you lot). We've had a lot of upheaval over the last few years and some big player departures and injuries have affected our 'very hard to beat' spirit of last season. Nevertheless, we'll turn up and give you a decent game hopefully without our keeper decking any of yours (that was a bit of a lively game, wasn't it). Please feel free to feel sorry for us and let us progress to round 2 as we need the dosh.
Obviously it's going to be a very hard game for Southend but 8k of Shrimpers will be giving it large in the hope that Mr Bonne does you yet again (I live in hope). I'm told we will know what the date will be on Friday, and tickets will go on sale shortly afterwards. Friday night under the lights would be my choice, always a great atmosphere.3 -
When I look back to that early 90 period when we used to play each other in the Championship, you had some cracking players then @Rootshallbloke
; Chris Powell, Ansah, Otto, Brett Angel, Spencer Prior, Dean Austin, Keith Jones, Collymore etc.7 -

Just to clarify, when you say "a girl giving some skinheads head a polish", what exactly do you mean?AFKABartram said:
Mate, I’d just turned 15 for that game in 1991. Was in there early playing pool with our lot when the strippers first come out. I’d only just started getting into boozers and drinking and felt fast tracked that day to adulthood. Said to my pal last night i remember a girl giving some skinheads head a polish and another giving someone’s glasses a very unhygienic clean. Then after the game with all the trouble (I think with Arsenal). Crazy what we used to get up to as teens.Off_it said:All down the Foresters for opening time.
My lad at 14 1/2 will be just shy age wise as I was that day when we go there in a few weeks. He’ll get a Fanta in a quiet friendly pub and then a Greggs if he’s lucky!4 -
It got the same treatment as the glasses…5

Oh right, not the sort of "polish" I thought you meant then!AFKABartram said:It got the same treatment as the glasses…

The two pubs nearest the ground, The Blue Boar and the Spread Eagle, are now both home supporters only. The Railway, immediately by Prittlewell station, welcomes well behaved away fans. Similarly, the West Road Tap allows away fans in, but as it is a converted public toilet, it struggles for space pre game. A shame as it is probably the best for decent beers. Other than that, it's the pubs in the high street, which is about a 20 minute walk to the ground. For those that have been to the Hall before, the Fish House chippy is thriving and as popular as ever, but the queues can be mega.Ducktapeshoerepairs said:

A bit further along from West Tap can try the Plough. If you want a bit of food pre match and coming on the train at Prittlewell could try Saxon King.

I'd recommend The Olde Trout Tavern, a few mins from Central Station. Real ale boozer.3

Please don't anybody go to the West Road Tap. That's where I'm heading. I'd like to be able to move in there. 😉Rootshallbloke said:

Could try Westcliff Drinks Co on Hamlet Court Road and walk from there. The Hamlet Court is ok as well.
I drink in Leigh on Sea, so bit far to make it for 3pm kick off…0 -

Would have thought Southend Charlton was a better pick than Northampton. Whilst a localish derby with Northampton at home there is less chance of a giant killing while us away at Southend could be, although hopefully not.2 -

Nah that Northampton Kettering game is huge. It's the Wrexham game that shouldn't be on there but was always going to be picked.Kap10 said:killerandflash said:It doesn't look like we're on TVFriday 1 November 2024Tamworth v Huddersfield Town at 7.45pm on BBC TwoSaturday 2 November 2024Northampton Town v Kettering Town at 5.30pm on BBC TwoSunday 3 November 2024Sutton United v Birmingham City at 12.30pm on ITV1Harrogate Town v Wrexham at 3.30pm on ITVXMonday 4 November 2024Chesham United v Lincoln City at 7.15 on ITV4

If we only get the expected 800 tickets then there will definitely be priority sale categories.3 -
Chesham v Lincoln? I reckon that one went under everyone's radar ( including people in Chesham and Lincon
 ) 2 -

Just checked i have 490 points swear i had more than that....so looks like Hartley Wintney instead unless Ebbsfleet rearrange a game.Chris_from_Sidcup said:

I get Birmingham and Wrexham are currently the new Salford, but a stark reminder of how far we’ve fallen that us v Southend is seen as less attractive to a TV audience than Northampton, Lincoln and Huddersfield5

Wrexham is the one that surprises me, because last season BBC Wales (S4C) simply streamed their games on BBC iPlayer with Welsh Commentary - I know its ITV showing them on this occasion, but could have opted to stream someone else, with Wrexham still getting shown on another channel.
Northampton vs Kettering a slight surprise given its League vs Non-League, but they showed with Charlton vs Cray Valley last season that they're moving away from that formula in certain cases, although I could have sworn Kettering were drawn as the home team.
Guess we'll have to wait and see if someone like ESPN+ choose to broadcast our match... as they did the Gillingham game0 -

Northampton game is a local derby with some decent names playing for Kettering to be fairAFKABartram said:I get Birmingham and Wrexham are currently the new Salford, but a stark reminder of how far we’ve fallen that us v Southend is seen as less attractive to a TV audience than Northampton, Lincoln and Huddersfield1 -
If it is only to be 800 we need to know how to get a stream without Sky Television.0

There's no real logic to why Chesham v Lincoln is a better pick than Southend v us.AFKABartram said:I get Birmingham and Wrexham are currently the new Salford, but a stark reminder of how far we’ve fallen that us v Southend is seen as less attractive to a TV audience than Northampton, Lincoln and Huddersfield
To be fair they did have us v Cray last season when we were the home side and no one expected it though.1 -

From a TV pov, Chesham are more of a genuine non league minnow than Southend I guess, though from a neutral pov, we're a bigger "giant" than Lincoln.Chris_from_Sidcup said:

Wouldn't the main point of interest from the tv company be how many viewers they'd get though? It's why Man U are always picked no matter who they play and it's surely why Harrogate v Wrexham has been chosen.killerandflash said:

Southend v Charlton would definitely attract more viewers than Chesham v Lincoln. Although i guess no matter who they show, a Monday night game on ITV4 isn't exactly going to bring the viewers flooding in.1 -

Maybe the ITV crew preferred an evening in leafy Chesham to Southend!Chris_from_Sidcup said:

Chesham are more of a minnow and have their own mini celeb connection as Alex Horne is on the board there1
 -
The vast majority of away travellers would prefer a Saturday afternoon kick off so it’s no loss not being picked on tv.
Away on a Monday night? No Saturday at 3pm will be just fine6 -
just hope we now don't get bumped to a Sunday slot for some overseas channel, like we had with Mansfield a few years ago.2
