I mean, good luck to the lad and i hope it works out well for him, but have they actually watched him this season? He must have an amazing agent.

Way too harsh on Fraser. He's been terrible this season, really struggled, but it sounds like he's had a lot going on in his head and needed to go back home pretty badly. He was good last season though, 9 goals and 5 assists is a great tally for a player regularly tasked with all of our creative responsibilities in a very poor team. We entirely relied on Rak-Sakyi pulling something out of the bag or Fraser conjuring something and that makes it very difficult for a player to find space when he's always going to be targeted to stop the flow in a weak midfield.He's generally suffered from coaches and fans not knowing what kind of player he is. He's not a 10 who can break the lines with incisive passing and he's not a deep lying play dictator. He's good at driving with the ball, has great feet and can spot an opening to create gaps in opposition teams with his movement on the ball but he needs the right players around him or he becomes a luxury. He's not fast and not a good tackler. That's why he did so well at MK Dons that season; he had midfielders around him who carried the weight and a team around him that totally controlled play. That meant he could probe and pop up in dangerous areas while his teammates pushed the ball around, and he's an excellent finisher so he benefited massively from the opportunities that came up. Our stupid team being reliant on forcing chances through individuals having a good moment in play meant that we were never fluid enough to make the most of his movement and constantly caught in transition when the moves break down, where he's essentially useless.He was wasted last season by being a decent player in a really poor team being expected to dictate games rather than profit from positive attacking play and things just haven't worked out for him. I hope he does well at Hearts and we start signing players who actually suit what we're doing rather than chucking them in and hoping.10

We should surely say we're doing you a favour but we're not going to make up the difference between what Hearts offer you and your salary down here.

Reckon he'll do well up there back home. A good player in there and seems a decent lad so hope he pushes on.

I don't have much time for these players who need specific roles in specific formations surrounded by specific types of players in order to perform. And I think that can often just be an excuse.

It's not about the player needing a specific role to perform, it's about not asking them to do things they specifically aren't good at and hoping they magically do well at it. Dictating play and winning the ball back in transition are things Fraser cannot do, so naturally that's mostly what we ended up needing him for. Just like how we asked Alfie May to play on his own up front when he can't hold the ball up or asked Edun, an attacking wingback, to patrol the whole left flank at LB because CBT offered him no protection. Absolutely no doubt Fraser should've offered more when on the ball though. Practically everything was kept extremely simple.Garrymanilow said:

Yeah, 100%. His real underperformance was in areas where he should have been shining. But it was constantly the safe, sideways and slow-it-down option. He's been playing well within himself.Talal said:

I get that he wanted to move back to Scotland, but he stopped showing up for us. And I'm a Charlton fan at the end of the day.

Two things can be true; he has played very badly, which falls on him, but also it doesn't help not using him in the way that suits him best. You've never complained about May being used as a lone striker or Thomas being played at left back? Of course you have, you love a tantrum. Garner played Fraser as a deep midfielder where he was fairly anonymous then Holden pushed him a bit higher up the pitch and he had a decent goal and assist return after that. He was then used differently by Appleton and his form dropped off again. A very frustrating thing about Fraser is that he's a player who has to be used in the correct system or you'll see very little from him. It's annoying but playing him as a deep midfielder, as a 10 or as a midfielder who has to track and put in challenges on the turnover is a waste, it's symptomatic of the lack of joined up thinking at the club.Croydon said:

Right, exactly this. Most players these days, in an era of speciality, have a specific role that they thrive in. Remember how pointless Alfie looked on his own up front under Holden? Balls just lumped into the channels for him and he was offside all the time? Obviously he gives it a go, just as Fraser did in a midfield 2, but May needs to be allowed to drop deeper and play off someone, just as Fraser needs a shuttler next to him to free him up to get forward. Think also of Dobbo as an 8. Bakinson as a 10.Garrymanilow said:

The issues we've had haven't necessarily been in signing players who are overly specialized, it's been in not signing specialized players who fit together cohesively. Signing Kirk and no overlapping LB, having Dobbo, Fraser, and Watson but no "Shuttler" to play with them (to be fair that was supposed to be Camara), now having Coventry, Dobbo, and Bakinson and no #10.1 -
