The weather is quite pleasant at the moment, but is likely to deteriorate from 1ish.

Ideally Broad 5-24 and Anderson 5-19 can finish the game by then  ;)

Amazing to think that Stewart Broad had a good batting average over his first dozen tests and a poor bowling average. Many thought because of his DNA he would turn into an all rounder because of his Dad's Batting ability.

He is a good talker( better than most Sky presenters) and I love his character and at 37, has his business interests and can spend more time (possibly) with his 1 year old daughter and Mollie instead of going off to India and missing vital months in his daughter's development.

As the son of a test cricketer he would know the damage caused by being away from home for months on end. If he has made the retirement decision to be home more often then it is the right one.

It is interesting what McGrath has just said about his development and growing up - how he played lots of tennis, golf, basketball as well as cricket and that helped to build all parts of his body to get used to the stresses that bowling puts on it. Many youngsters in Australia play those sports as well as Aussie Rules so is the reason that so many of ours are breaking down because they are encouraged to concentrate on cricket for fear that those other sports will end up taking them away from cricket? My own experience is that county training for those even as young as 11 starts in January - and before that as players get older especially once they reach 15 and thoughts of Bunbury, Super 8s, Academies etc etc take prominence. Equally, how many are told not to play football or rugby for fear that they might get injured?

The ECB report that has recommended no county age group matches until 14 will go some way not only to broaden the numbers of those that might still be playing cricket at 14 but also to allow those that are to actually strengthen all the tendons and ligaments playing those other sports.

I hope neither Broady or Jimmy get injured from Starc !
Jimmy is happy down the other end 😀
Baz and Ben have a cunning plan.🤔
Ok I get it, one last chance to get a six 👏
Jimmy/ Stewart are saving their legs,
    What a wonderful life.
Last shot for 6 is a great last hit for Broad.

Slightly odd tactics where England refuse to take singles

Broad hits his last ever ball for 6, a nice way to finish

Come on Broad. Let's have one more time Warner out. Bowled Broad caught at slip.

Did we just bat to give Broad a send off ?

It looks like it and his last ever strike was a 6.

I don't think the Aussies have a hope of winning. They haven't batted well for a few games and they seem mentally done. Wouldn't be shocked if we knock them over cheaply.

    Andy Zaltzman

Cricket statistician on Test Match Special

    It's Stuart Broad's 55th six for England.

Only four players have hit more sixes for England in Tests: Ben Stokes, Kevin Pietersen, Andrew Flintoff and Ian Botham.

They can take their time and sorry to say they do have players who can play long innings. They aren't really under pressure because they are taking home the Ashes.
I wouldn't be surprised if some punters take the 22/5 or other odds are available if the rain isn't as bad and long as Manchester.

Why is it so quiet ?

Is that Anderson’s highest test score;) I think he was denied a century once wasn’t he?

Wonder if he’ll retire at the end of this series?

Broad's batting test average finishes at 18 which when you consider it was 29 after the first few years of his test career before  becoming a tail ender with some night hawk action towards the end.

Anderson said only a few days ago that he is still keen to carry on. Whether he might change that decision, given that his best pal and bowling partner has now retired, is still a possibility I suppose though he might too want to leave when he is at the very top of his game. We really would be in trouble if he did because how do you replace almost 1,300 Test wickets overnight?

I appreciate that it's painful for Moeen to bowl but it's painful for me wondering what might come out next. Bad balls do get bad wickets though.

I watched that , didn’t they also say that he didn’t have any formal coaching until he was 22. He just did what he felt was right , so no coach could ruin  his action at a young age ?

Decent session that for the Aussies, not a lot of help for our bowlers. It would be a massive shame if the rain keeps the players off the field this afternoon.

Rain only works if you are Aussie...🙄

Hopefully once they get back out there Wood can have a bowl as the rest have not threatened at all. Batsmen most in danger from Ali's full tosses than being caught, bowled or lbw.

I know I have been wrong throughout this Test but the fact remains.....the Aussies have got through a whole session without losing a wicket & although only going at 3 an over they have another 5 sessions to get 310 runs.

And they have Smith & Labuschagne to come which have been our Nemesis for the past few years.

    I'm praying for more rain.

Whats the point in hoping for rain? We'd lose the series

He did. He also said that not having a coach help him with his batting probably didn't help him in that respect.
