    i'd tend to agree with that assessment - it didn't exactly come across as being their "day" in the same sense as the last test or anything - marginally in front a bit like the other tests patterns have been - I did read something on BBC TMS whilst at work that someone texted in who had watched at lot of games this year at that ground who thought 280 was about par even in good conditions - not sure whether to take that as gospel but i'm not going to be doom and gloom about things just yet.

    good for batting tomorrow.

    As I said earlier, I reckon they'll get a 100+ lead and bowl us out again before close on Saturday. Have 2 days to get 200 or thereabouts.

    In the old days - Len Hutton etc - a score of 170-3 was a reasonably to be expected score on day one, with a target of 400 or so on day 2.  Not entertaining cricket by today’s standards but there were no ODIs in those days and I have to say that the prospect of Lindwall and Miller bowling to Hutton and Compton and co was eagerly awaited.

    Might not be "back in the old days" but the Ashes series of 1985 we scored close to 400 on the 1st day in one of the Tests. 300 -330 was more the norm, but that was when 90 overs were bowled in the day.....not the 82 or 83 that are bowled now.

    I’m seeing overcast conditions for most of the day tomorrow. Will be shocked if the Aussies don’t get a lead but I think it’ll be very small - hopefully less than 50.

    India posted 296 in the second innings of the match in the WTC earlier in the summer. That’s the highest total for the second innings of a Test match at the Oval in seven years…

    If Australia post more than 350, they’ll have done very well, or England very poorly with the ball.

    Here's a little advice to the bowlers from someone who last played cricket about 40 years ago...'Bowl at those 3 wooden things in the ground as it may help you get wickets which will help you win test matches'.....Oh and another piece of advice make sure Ben Foakes is number 1 choice wicketkeeper for the India tour.😉

    Harry Brook in his post match interview seemed to be suggesting that. 

    A number of England players were bowled, and it was notable that many nicks weren't carrying to the slips if the batsman wasn't driving hard.

    As I said yesterday, Broad & Anderson bowled far too many balls wide, especially down the leg side.
    It may have been deliberate because we picked up a couple of wickets in the last Test with leg side edges off glove & bat, but it didn't look a good plan to me.

    I think the Aussies will end the day about 290/7. Hoping we bowl better than we did last night and take all their wickets though!

    Great piece from Sky about the Ashes Over 60s which England won this season. England's team includes Nasser's older brother, Mel as well as former Blackheath legend (and now Old Colfeians), Rupert Staple and also from Kent, John Butterworth (Whitstable) and Jim Phillips (Upchurch)

    I get genuinely annoyed when bowling sides ask for the ball to be changed. I think the ICC should bring in a penalty to stop it happening. Just get on with the game!

    In the county championship you can only ask twice per innings, a much better system.
