Head got more overs at Lords than Murphy got at Headingley!

Woakes is so underrated, especially in England.
    6 wickets… 32 massive runs… I make you right

Woakes record in England is really good.

I think the stat is that he averages 22 in England with the ball. A no brainer selection especially if there's a tinge of green in the wicket, his runs are important (he averages 28) and he bats calmly too. He never looked liked getting out today.

    My team for Old Trafford…

    Crawley
    Duckett
    Bairstow/Ali
    Root
    Brook
    Stokes
    Foakes
    Woakes (those three together finally!)
    Wood
    Broad
    Tongue/Anderson

Ali if the pitch favours spin. Anderson if it’s a green top and Tongue if it’s a flat deck nothing.
I reckon Broad might be rested, Anderson and Tongue for Broad and Robinson maybe.
No bowlers will need resting at OT, as there's a decent break before then. Robinson will surely drop out because of his injury issue, and Jimmy will be ahead of Tongue.

I'd play Tongue rather than Anderson. The extra pace generated by Wood in this match shows what we've missed. Having Wood and Tongue at 90MPH plus would be the Bazball way and Woakes/Broad are there to offer some control if the all out pace option doesn't work. Wood was also getting some swing with the 95MPH stuff.

I'd probably play Moeen rather than Jonny Bairstow, I don't think there's much between them as batsmen and we get a spinner with Moeen.

Great win for England once more when all seemed lost, the tail didn't just wag alongside Brook, it achieved lift off

I hope Anderson is not brought back at O Trafford for nostalgia/old times' sake .. it's usually a pretty fast wicket there and I suspect, and hope that Tongue and Wood along with Woakes and Broad will be the best quartet
Bairstow should go, BUT he won't .. mates rules that he can pick up another big match fee despite his almost all poor performances so far this series

    As Michael Vaughan said.

People will say Ali coming in at 3 didn’t work, but it did as it meant Brook came in at 5

Crawley after 3 Tests has a higher average than both Smith and Labuschagne, which is a less impressive stat than you would have forecast before the series.

Watching Pat Cummings interview with Atherton,.. not one word of congratulations to England, blaming everything, Clouds included, for the result, you lost mate to a better team on the day,...wouldn't take too much to say a few words of appreciation to the opposition...

Why is BBC4 currently showing a fucking Classical music programme rather than the advertised cricket?

Why would you pick Anderson ahead of Tongue based on what we’ve seen this summer?

Great performance and both teams are clearly closely matched. One thing I think helped England in this one was all the bowlers can bat. Injuries permitting, I'd keep it the same.

I just can't see them leaving Jimmy out of his home Test, and basically finishing his career. And while he hasn't been playing well in this series, it's not as if he's been living on past glories. Jimmy's still ranked No 4 in the world in the ICC rankings, so who would bet against him finding his mojo again?

    Love that.
Very wise head on young shoulders is Brook.
And he's only going to get better and better.

    Bairstow's averages against Australia:

    In Australia 32.29 (17 innings)
    In England  26.00  (27 innings)

Lots of comparisons to 2019 being made in the media. For me that finish and game was more similar to the (admittedly not headingly) game in 2005 when Giles and Hoggard saw us across the line.

Excellent match and amazing finish. Love how every game has been on a knife edge. Do the basics better and we win the series.

    Team for the next test?

Assuming Robinson isn't fit and Broad will be rested give jes done 4 back to back (including ireland).

Anderson in for Robbo, Tongue in for Broad. Hopefully Wood is able to go again.

They wont but I would bring Foakes in for Bairstow. Not been good enough with bat or gloves. The keeping affects his batting and his jeering isn't where it needs to be since the injury. Either he plays as a batsman or he doesn't play. On form he doesn't get in the side as a batsman. I also think all the attention around him being brought in for foakes has put him under a lot more pressure. His fitness and game is so under the microscope I think it's really affected his performances.

Agreed. Headingley 2019 was a miracle individual performance and last wicket partnership, whereas today wasn't about an individual singlehandedly defying the odds.

And all the talk before the series was that he suited the conditions here and would be unplayable.

It's actually been more like Aus in the sense that the genuine quicks with that extra pace have been more effective than the medium pace seam bowlers. I think its good for Engligh cricket. I hope the pitches continue and trickle down into the county game.

It's actually 41 but yeah. Incredible.

If we take the 2019 world cup final approach surely we are ahead on both losing less wickets and hitting more boundaries?

No room for sentiment. This is the Ashes. If we were playing India or Sri Lanka then no problem, but we need our best 11 out there.
