We need a fast bowler, and we don't have a fit one. Most of the problem comes down to that.
Bit like strikers, you can get by with bits & pieces players but a very good fast bowler will win you games.

Well the Aussies proved one thing in their second innings: they play the short bowl as poorly as we do.

Hoping we get to see Mark Wood in for the next Test.

We lost the match in the 1st innings being 188/1 & then getting ourselves out for just 325.

Should at least got to 400. Even a lead of 30 or 40.

Not surrendering a lead of almost 100.

Stokes's interview is interesting, wouldn't want to win a game that way, would have withdrawn the appeal.

Arguably England will start the next Test with an improved XI (Wood for Anderson?); and Australia, by losing Lyon, will start with a diminished one.

Will that close the gap between the two teams sufficiently?

One thing is surely taken for granted: Stokes will do everything in his considerable power to make it 1-2, and keep England in the hunt.

Just not enough same story as the first test. If Crawley and pope had turned up things could have been different.

Will Pope make the next test? If not could Foakes be called up and Bairstow promoted up the order (not that he's shown anything like last year's form yet)?

Why those two? Why not include root, brook, bairstow and Anderson in that statement.

Not heard any of the post match interviews but Wish they’d stop moaning about the stumping - I bet Bairstow had been spotted wandering off previously and Aussies were acting on a plan.

Also, Broad is on record as saying he wouldn’t walk if he nicked it and was not given out so let’s not play the hard done by card.

That said, I would us to do a Mankad to Steve Smith on the next game

Gave it a good go in our last innings just to much to catch the Aussies
But love the attacking game we are playing  B)

The most frustrating thing is that we're 2-0 down when we could've arguably won both tests.

Silly declaration in the first test.
Gave away stupid wickets in this one.
It's the equivalent of losing two football matches 3-2, missing penalties in both and giving away stupid goals to the opposition. We've heavily contributed to losing both matches.

Great effort by Stokes and Broad but the damage had been done. Just ten runs between three of our top order batters in that second innings shouldn’t go unnoticed notwithstanding some quality bowling by the Aussies.

No-one, at any level of cricket should ever walk if the umpire gives it not out.

Nick it and walk, if you want. But you should never walk if the umpire gives it not out.

If you know you've hit it and the fielders appeal, but the umpire prevaricates, then you should walk, to save him from making a decision. But if the umpire gives it not out, you can't overturn him by walking.

    That's my view anyway.

When smith does his over reacting practice shots after the ball has beaten him, is he in his crease? I'm sure England will looking closely

i agree, but I'm glad stoked said what he did (we wouldn't want to win in that way)

I really hope the England analysts (and we employ enough of them) are watching for any Aussies who wander out of their crease...

But then his form is also better when he doesn't keep.  If Pope doesn't play, it makes sense, you can even go Root, Brook, Bairstow middle order if you're not sure about Bairstow at 3.

Cummins just pretended it was a completely normal stumping... wed noticed him leaving his ground etc.

    Come off it.

Mankading is a dick move but at least the batsman is trying to get an advantage, Bairstow wasn't.

I can't understand those who think it was within the spirit of the game. Just because others may have done other similar things not in the spirit of the game in the past doesn't mean it was. What it signals to me is that winning fair and square is less important that winning by foul means or fair and I'm glad it wasn't us in this instance.

was there with my lad - £25 for the two of us grandstand upper. Fantastic batting from Stokes and great atmosphere after the Bairstow dismissal. Don’t want to see Robinson in an England shirt again - pathetic with both bat and ball

When your playing the best team in the world with a group of players that clearly aren't.

I'd love if we got one that way and then withdrew the appeal, which Stokes said we would. That would really humiliate them and show them up for the poor sportsmen they continue to be. Glad we don't have their reputation, but it does give them an us against everyone else mentality which fires them up unfortunately.

Thing is, they could have been a good team to watch if they weren't so far up their own arses that they can see daylight, they really do think they are that good, but in truth just another team there to be beaten...

This is much the same Australian side that told Jimmy Anderson to prepare for a broken arm when he came out to bat, that made disparaging comments about Johnny Bairstow’s father. Sandpapered a ball to try to gain an advantage and moan like spoilt little children when things go against them. In short they’re cunts and we should treat them exactly like that from now on. Throw down their stumps when they step out of the crease, accidentally hit the batsmen with the ball when running between the wickets and give them plenty of hostile bowling. We have for years had to endure hostile conditions when over there we should give it back.

Just on the train home. The best day of test cricket I’ve ever seen live. Even if we came up short. The game was lost on the evening of Day 2 and the morning of Day 3.

absolutely gutted but what an effort. Still truly believe it’s all to play for.

Unnecessary pressure put on those by the failures of those mentioned. OK.
