    The rules are the rules. Hard to see England not losing though. We need great innings from the current batsmen to even have a sniff.

    The law's the law. It's quite clear. But, frankly, if these people's ancestors were better acquainted with laws, they wouldn't even be Australian.

    That wasn't a catch, its a sickener and seems a bit unfair on Starc but thankfully with the benefit of technology the cheating bastards don't get away with that anymore.

    We are screwed, Brendan McCullum and his way of playing cricket is do or die tomorrow. Stranger things, not many, have happened but the way we have played doesn't make me think lightning is going to strike twice. 

    I'm sparing a thought for James Anderson, this is a series too far for our greatest bowler and watching the muck Robinson keeps throwing down and him pathetically being a big mouth when he has done nothing like enough in the game to be giving verbals to anyone, as we try and find a replacement from somewhere reminds me of the days of Ryan Sidebottom screaming at our fielders as they chased after another batsman-friendly half volley he sent down. 

    How badly do we need a proper wicket-keeper too

    Would love to be wrong & we are still in with a shout at lunch, but we all know how these things work. Miss having a lie in to watch it from 11am & by 11.30 wish I had stayed in bed. 

    4 years ago was a one off. Can't happen again.....surely ?

    These Aussies are a sensitive lot, as far as I heard (I was watching two screens at the time and switching commentary between the TDF so might have missed it) the suggestions about if he got hit in the head he might get a concussion sub we’re very much tongue in cheek. I get that they lost a player like that in the past, but does that mean no one in the future can ever mention being hit in the head? That and the moaning about the catch just makes them sound like a bunch of whingers, who let’s face it we’re happy to cheat in the past. And who remembers the ‘get ready for a broken arm Jimmy’ when Anderson went out to bat a few years ago.

    I think it was more just thinking outloud. Hadn't occurred to me until it was mentioned (once) on Sky whilst Lyon was batting.

    There was also a comment that it would very likely be Lyon last appearance over here in a Ashes Test match & wanted one last appearance it in the middle.....which made a lot more sense.

    This is what KP actually said “Imagine if he (Lyon) had been hit on the head and got concussion. He’d have got a like-for-like replacement and a world class spinner (Murphy), based on how he performed in India. it gives food for thought.”

    Speaking in 2020 this is what Lyon said about the incident that caused Hughes to die "I was about ten metres away from Phil when he got hit that day. The memories are obviously pretty fresh, and obviously he was a pretty good mate of mine and an unbelievable teammate as well. It's one of those things you're not going to let go"

    Lyon is being sensitive perhaps. But, perhaps, he has ever right to feel so given the circumstances. But if we are going to "imagine" then let's imagine that Lyon did get hit on the head and was concussed. The world and its mother would have claimed that KP was right all along.

    KP is on Sky to be controversial. When it goes wrong he accuses fellow commentators of "setting him up to say those things" as he has done in this Test. But then we are talking about the bloke that sent text messages to the opposition about how to get one of his team mates out, in the middle of a Series against the recipients of those messages and calling that person, his own captain, Andrew Strauss, a 'doos'. In Afrikaans' slang that means 'dumb cunt', I think most people recognise who and what he is all about. Kevin Peter Pietersen.

    I agree generally about KP and am no fan of his and I did hear that comment he made at the time but wondered if there was something else said ie indicating that was a deliberate plan. It is a valid point for him to raise because as you say if Lyon did get hit on the head, a very real possibility with the short pitch bowling he was facing and his inability to move his feet too much then he could have got a replacement. It has nothing to do with Hughes’ death. I’m assuming Lyon wasn’t listening to the comms while batting so someone has told him about it afterwards presumably to stir things up.

    That aside, Lyon went out to bat not knowing what KP had said so how many attempts did he make at head butting those dozen short balls? Because going out to bat and getting hit on the head was his agenda for doing so wasn't it? He made a pretty poor attempt at getting in the way of those balls and/or connecting with the bat, didn't he if that truly was his reason for doing so?

    Nobody, literally nobody, goes out to bat with the intention of getting hit on the head by a ball at 80mph to 90mph. Literally everyone should try doing it if they have any doubts about that. But if anyone wants to try it then feel free to message me. I have a bowling machine and am happy to hire a hall for your enjoyment in doing so.

    Okay, exaggeration. But the possibility that he'd be hit and replaced was surely on the mind? Not that he was sent out to be hit, or that he'd deliberately be hit, which are both nonsense. But his injury would make it harder to evade the short stuff England were bowling. Really, they should have bowled full to him, imo

    I think that it would have been the last thing on his mind given what happened to his friend. As I have added since you quoted me, I'm happy to meet you at Avery Hill and set the bowling machine up. I'm sure that the experience might change your mind. The thud, if you are fortunate to get out of the way, when the ball hits the back net at 85mph, is enough to terrify most people.

    In the old days, there was an understanding that fast bowlers didn't bump tail enders. Robinson has already told us that Lyon is one of their three number 11s but he is still fair game even in a situation where he is struggling to move out of the way. If anything, Lyon was stupidly brave and had he been an Englishman then I'm sure that KP would not have made that comment, or people believed, that to get knocked out was even a possible bonus for going out to bat. 

    Let's think of it another way. Concussion subs are only a very recent innovation. I believe that Lyon would still have gone out to bat prior to that change of Law.

    I always thought it was Whinging Poms they used to call us but this series is very much proving its whinging Aussies. 

    Not least the 2 examples yesterday

    Taylor on sky comms yesterday saying the umpires should intervene and tell the bowlers they cant bowl the short ball tactic because it was dangerous and wasn't fair even though the Aussies started doing it first and more and 15mph faster. 

    And then the reaction to the Starc non-catch is ridiculous. 

    Get over it children you're winning.

    I don't mean on Lyon's mind, I mean on the mind of people watching! Of course he'd have gone out to bat regardless. If anything it's more a case that I'm saying KP probably meant it was food for thought for the England bowlers not to bowl short at him. At least in my charitable reading

    Irs a fair thing to review, that yes if he had been hit on the head a concussion sub would come in however, and this is from a man who lost a good mate playing 5 a side by hitting his head can also react a bit emotionally when I see something like a player trying to nudge, trip, smash another into the wall at 5 a side. So I understand, how the question might have been put to Nathan Lyon prompted that reaction. 

    Not in a million years was he sent out to get hit in the face with a ball, yes we had wickets to take however he is a test cricketer and knows how to get out of the way of fast bouncing balls.

    I can't see what the fuss was about in relation to the no catch. The ball was grounded as part of the same movement as the catching action. Was poor from the fielder in reality.

    But then those watching have no idea whatsoever how difficult it is to face quick bowling even when you are a specialist batsman. KP himself said that about facing the likes of facing Morkel and Johnson. All that comment of his did was to reinforce the thoughts of people who do not appreciate what it's like to face that. And he would have been the first to say "I told you so" had Lyon be concussed. For that reason, I think that you are being far too charitable so far as KP is concerned. 

    PS The offer at Avery Hill is still there. The machine comfortably goes up to 90mph. The even better news is that the rubber matting on that hard floor means that the ball picks up even more bounce and pace. I can't guarantee, though, that any two balls, on the same length, will produce the same bounce. Great prep though for the real thing and will certainly force you to watch the ball!!!

    Was out yesterday afternoon so missed the drama - day one of learning how to play cricket youre taught not to ground the ball like that when you’ve taken a catch. Sheer idiocy from starc. No sympathy, would be furious with our own player if they did that.

    It was stupid of Starc. In his head he had control of the ball in taking the catch but invited the decision to be given "not out" by not preventing himself from grounding it.
