Typical, has to be Crawley that loses his wicket first😾

    Duckett brings up his 100.

100 consecutive balls this series without leaving.

Consequence of Bazball - balls go out of shape quicker!

The biggest opening stand by England in an Ashes test since 2010; it should've been so much bigger.

Crawley averages 28 for a reason. He can look brilliant and then throws his wicket away as if he's playing 20/20. Isn't it possible to play Bazball with just a bit of nous.
exactly my problem with him. He's always been like that when i've seen him for kent - looks 100% a test match batsman and plays some wonderful strokes and then plays a silly shot and gets out for 30.

I was staying in Canterbury for a few days and Crawley scored a big ton, it may have been his debut 100 for Kent. In the second innings he got a duck from a poor shot !
Zak goes from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Reminds me of Vince for the pretty 20s and 30s before getting out, and we cut our losses on him in the end.

Though we had a lot more options in the middle order than opening.

Is that a record for an opening Batsman ?

With a big total you would think the Aussies would bowl more balls in the corridor of uncertainty to Ben Duckett.

This is a fascinating little battle here , Pope living dangerously here but also playing some lovely shots.

The most annoying thing about Vince (and Jennings) not managing to nail down a slot in the test side is that they are genuine decent part time seam bowling options and would be really useful in making up the overs that Stokes is unable to bowl currently.

It is Duckett's area of success. It's only when that ball is too close to cut or he doesn't totally commit to the shot that he gets in trouble.

Since Duckett was recalled last season:

    Innings - 15
    100s - 2
    50s - 5
    Runs - 782
    Average - 65.17

Since Cook retired, he is by far the most successful of the 12 batsmen asked to open. He's also done it in different conditions - in Pakistan, New Zealand and now in England

Reminder to myself not to judge a Test match until both sides have had a chance to bat…

How did that go last Test?

I still see Australia as comfortable favourites here.  163-1 could easily become 200-4 or 5, and we've got a long tail now.

And we're batting 4th when Lyon looks in decent form.

Agreed. Still a long way to go to get parity. I wouldn't make us favourites until we're at least 50 ahead.

Had this from a mate on a cricket group chat 20 minutes before we lost at Edgbaston:

"Still 59% England win 40% Australia"

Think they only needed about 11 at the time.

Not sure I trust the stats at the moment!!

The stats are based on 100s of test matches, this is the 14th Bazball test.

They are meaningless now.  We will lose games we should have won and win games we had no right to.  Won't draw many.

Could this be the Mcgrath 2005 moment. Never want someone to be injured but if he is out for the series its a serious boost for us.
