  • Is he still around I wonder……..not seen him for quite a while?

Yes he is. I sometimes bump into him in Charlton although he doesn't  go to football anymore.
He hasn't changed much and still likes a cap.
  • I remember him from my early away days 1983 onwards. Absolute die-hard....always at the games, no matter where they were.

Unbelievable that he doesn’t go anymore…..he lived and died every moment, home and away.
A real character……miss having him around, he was part of the furniture.

He lives in Charlton, I guess that’s where you see him……but baldybonce says he doesn’t go to games any longer or have you seen him at The Valley?

Yes a very recognisable regular at away games back then.

There's loads that don't go any more but he was very recognisable.

The last time we spoke we reminisced about the old days and he said the Duchetelet had spoiled it for him and things just weren't the same.
Next time i see him i'll ask him to sign up here.

  • Wasn't he the real Ronnie Moore's minder? He gets mentioned in Ronnie's autobiography.

I think he might have been a sidekick of Ronnies…..I don’t think he would have needed a minder as Ronnie was/is a big strong fella.
  • i think he used to do errands / be a bit of an odd job man for the club, maybe help players etc etc - maybe a bit of an eighties tracey leaburn
  • Always thought he was the groundsman back then
  • I always remember his blue Hillman Hunter and flat cap.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I think his full name is Paul Pace. He used to go to all away games with Gerry Amato and his son who was known as young Gerald.

Gerry actually moved back to Malta some years back and passed away at a guess about 10 to 15 years ago.
He lived in Battersea and was a barber for some years in Church Lane where quite a few of the players and staff would have their haircut’s.
He had an Irish wife who then moved back there from Malta after Gerry died and her son ‘Gerrard’ went with her…..not sure if she is still alive and whether Gerrard is still in Ireland. I believe he is, as he’s not been seen or heard of for many a year.

Remember going to Newcastle once and Gerry Amato's son got off the train at Darlington for a toilet as the train pulled up right outside the gents.

It had stopped for a few minutes at each scheduled station on the way up, but on this occasion it didn't.

Remember Gerry having a right barney with the travelling police on the train, but there was little they could do about it, they had to wait for him at Newcastle on the next train which in those days you got escorted to the ground from the station, the OB weren't too pleased.

Paul could also tuck away some grub, many occasions at the service stations he had two dinners in front of him, big fellow.
  • As far as I remember he was always very close to Paul Elliott

My dad was good friends with Gerry and lived in Malta , his wife died many years before he did I believe

Did she really…..that’s strange because I’m sure she went back to Ireland with Gerrard after Gerry died, surely she wouldn’t have gone there ‘before’ Gerry died and left him alone in Malta?
  • No my mum and dad used regularly visit them and go out for meals together , but Maria ( i want to say her name was but not sure) sadly died which would have been about 15 years ago , then I believe his son went out there for a bit to Gerry , gerry died what feels like maybe 4/5 years ago , not 100% certian as i’m basing this on memory but i’m certian his wife passed long before he did

@s@"SoundAsa£" Checked with my dad and as I thought Maria died about 15 years ago and Gerry died about 5 years ago and Gerard lived in Malta and moved back to Cork with his Maltese partner
