  • Clare is my favourite player at the moment - hopefully his good start continues.

Anybody still think we should have kept Matthews and Purrington :)
The thought of having Matthews in this team at RB gives me PTSD

The modern day Bob Curtis. He could play RB and CB and occasionally midfield and was capable of the odd 30 yarder too. Great to see and the sort of player that kids will latch on to. Here's hoping he stays long enough not to break their hearts!

Did anyone say we should've kept Matthews?

Ah but both have gone to Premier League sides in their respect countries - So like the argument from Rangers fans when they took Aribo - They've in fact made a massive step up from us, as could be playing in Europe ;)

Well Matthews will if he's involved against Genk in the Conference League

After seeing Clayedn's assured and confident performance, comfort on the ball and appetite to attack no I've done a u turn re Purrington.(Was not keen on keeping Matthews)

Edit...because we have 2 good uns at left back with him and Sessengon

Might need a bit of work.

The player certainly has cult hero potential at the very least.

for when he scores a screamer like the other night

Maybe time for a rename to the thread?

Sooooo, will his versatility be his downfall? I wouldn't mind seeing Clare/Egbo both down the right with Rak-Saki on the left the odd game.
  • He's a younger version of Andy Hughes in this team.

I'd quite like to see a 532 again:

                      Wollacott
    Egbo Clare Innis O'Connell Sess

    Fraser Dobson  Payne
                Stockley Leaburn

Think he could be a great RW option if we want to play the 4-4-2 against teams where we feel we need to be a bit less open. Exeter bypassed our midfield with ease a few times last night - if we want to go down the Curbs 'CM on the wing' route I think Sean would be perfect.

I'd worry about it while Kirk is on the other side - bit of a lack of pace, and if you have a tucked in 'making a third centre mid when needed type player on one side, I'd want a proper winger on the other.

But maybe on the odd game where CBT plays on the left (if he's actually making an effort, playing etc).

You can't go into a game with Clare and Kirk as your wingers lol, you need at least one winger who will take their man on. I mean maybe Clare would be that

Really like Clare - a steady 7/10 player every game - no matter where he's asked to play he puts in a shift and doesn't look out of place.

There's an easy solution to that one.  Yet another Shirker Kirk's underperformance last night is your clue.

To his detriment, I think he’s a good player, but I’m not sure he’s the best player in any particular position so when everyone’s fit he can’t get into the XI.

Sometimes that can work against players but it hasn't stopped Milner from having a 20 year career and 828 appearances. Always handy to have someone like that as was the case when Gritt was with us.

Really think he needs a go in the third midfield slot.

Hopefully us bringing in a full back or two will allow us to try him where he believes he is best.

Would bring something different to Morgan but neither are good enough for where we want to be.

Problem is Clare plays walking football a lot of the time.

He currently plays facing one way. Get dispossessed in midfield and there are dangerous consequences.

Needs to lose the mask as soon as he can.
  • Clare is one of those players who is talented but not good enough to play right back and not good enough to play midfield- Karl Robinson had him completely sussed - Dean Holden will look to replace him

He got ripped apart first 20 mins by Ganarcho.....much better 2nd half. I would like to see him as defensive mid.

Can't fault the lad's engine or his effort. Not sure about his football brain or quality on the ball at times though.

Bit of credit tonight though. Garnacho had him on toast for a while but, in the end, over the 90, I thought he came out with a points victory in his individual battle.

Personally, I prefer Morgan in midfield, at least when we are playing the 3. I think Morgan's been playing better since coming back into the team than he's been getting credit for, and I think he balances best with Dobson and Fraser. Certainly, swapping Morgan for Payne hasn't particularly been improving us, either from the start or off the bench.

Clare has done okay at right back, and he gets up and down the line well, but he'll never be a natural there. If we can get this Edun guy in (and he's decent) and then switch Sess over to his natural side, I think that could have a big impact on our balance and what we can do attacking wise from fullback, particularly Sess overlapping as JRS cuts inside (assuming Palace let him stay here).

Clare needs to specialise in something for midfield. Even if he had a long throw, accurate whipped cross, desire to score, show aerial ability, etc.
