But it’s football, and it’s tournament football. I’ve seen city or Liverpool turn in worst performances than that but they get 37 other games to make it right. It’s cliche but it’s true.I don’t think I’ve ever seen a World Cup winning side be perfect from start to finish.I haven’t seen Man City play worse than us today since they had Paul Dickov leading the line3 -
"Arguably" this is our best squad / group since 1966.You say last year was too soon. I say it was the best time for us to win a major trophy. No wibble. No woke. No name calling. But I did play a bit during my "career" if you need to check if I am qualified to at least have an opinion. You LOL my posts. I just think you can't be wrong. I mean I'll just have to wait 2 and 4 years' time to bring your comments up.But Southgate won't be manager then......0

All about how we respond Tuesday.I'll never understand how Mount is getting 90 minutes and Foden can't even get on the pitch.2

I think part of the problem was the situation. The England players would have been aware a draw was a decent result and a defeat would have been a disaster and I think they were a bit too deliberate and careful. USA played well but we were a bit too risk averse. Hopefully we should see a better performance against Wales as they have to beat us by four to knock us out.
Beyond that, I think the doubts have to be there that Southgate is a bit too negative when the stakes are high. You can get away with it in the group stages but I think you have to try to beat the good teams 3-0 if you are England. Not that you will often of course but we are better offensively than defensively and that is how we will be successful with a bit of luck.
As for USA, a draw against England would have helped their confidence but they still have to beat Iran to go through.1 -
Is it too late to bring chucks on ????3
-
In this competition it was important nor to loose it wasn't important to win and it looked as if the team were intent on not loosing - job done?0
-
We seemed lacklustre and missing any spark.
The longer the game went on the more USA grew in confidence, as they sensed they were coping with relative ease.
I was desperate for the substitutions as I felt we were drifting inexorably towards defeat, in fact I felt Gareth should have acted sooner. Raheem was ineffectual and Jude unable to make an impact
The changes definitely evened the contest and we started to put them on the back foot a bit more.
They say the best teams find a way to win even when they play badly.
We didn't do that, but we steadied the ship and earned a point where many England teams in the past would have melted to the point of a sucker punch defeat.
A bad day at the office but no harm done.
Maguire was a colossus.1 -
If I was deciding Welsh tactics, I'd be ignoring the theoretical chance to knock England out by scoring 4 and aiming to try to nick any sort of win and hope for a draw in the other match. It's a long-shot, but if they set up to try to win by 4 it could end up 7-0 to England.
Most likely is that Wales finish bottom of the group and USA-Iran is a straight fight for second. Which is how a lot of people expected the group to turn out; it's just most people were predicting USA to beat Wales rather than Iran.0 - Sponsored links:

Rubbish, why does Mount get so much game time but Foden can't.
Still we are into the next round and we'll be favourites against Netherlands Ecuador or Senegal.2 -

Fodden would get in any club side in Europe, but not the England team. It's baffling.
Never seen him put a good game in when away from Man City
FA, Foden hasn't been shit for England he just hasn't been the genius he is at City.
Football is now a 16 man game but it felt right from the beginning we were happy with a point.
I know the word is overused these days, but if Foden is a genius, what superlatives are left for those at a level above him like Ronaldo, Messi, Zidane, Cruyff etc. Or those 2 levels above him like Pele, Maradona and Best?2 -
That Foden has not had a single minute in two full games now is baffling!3

To give Southgate some credit I'm sure he set out to win the game but once it became clear USA were so well organised then 0-0 became a very good result (which he played for) and virtually guarantees qualification.

None of our midfield 3 played well offensively or defensively, the US midfield dominated the game.1 -

No doubt we didn't win because "ironically" we didn't pick Phillips?
Like you keep telling us Southgate wanted to...
Why won't Southgate be manager in 2 years time? Why would we sack our 2nd most successful manager ever?3 -
Herein lies the problem....More from England boss Gareth Southgate on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Phil Foden is fine. We've got some very good forwards that we can bring into the game. In the wide areas we decided on Jack [Grealish] and Marcus [Rashford] instead of Phil because we thought their different attributes were what would help us get over the line. They weren't able to find that missing spark but we know Phil is a super player and whichever one I didn't put on, if we didn't score, we were going to get asked about which one we didn't put on."Rob GreenFormer England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 LiveJudging by Gareth's comments there and reading between the lines he doesn't consider Phil Foden in another position than the wide position. That was the direct choice. Is it Rashford or Foden? Is it Grealish or Foden? Not can I stick him in where Mount is? It is just not a consideration in this side. Now Pep sold Sterling
Pep plays Foden
Wide. Ahead of them both
Foden can also play in Mount's position too.
Not 1 minute. In 2 games? Either whilst leading 6-2 or drawing 0-0?
Pep has been quoted as saying Foden is the BEST young player he has ever coached.
Baffling. Truly baffling.3 -

The sooner we get knocked out and we lose this dull football managing accountant Southgate the better. So much attacking talent stymied by a man who is so afraid of losing that he forgets the actual point of football is to win. So frustrating watching England under Southgate.3

World cup semi final
Euros final
Let's go back to the generally 40 years of shit that came before hand because Southgate obviously doesn't have a scooby do what he is doing.4 -

Well I’m very glad after all that nonsense that I’m not going to post on this thread.3

Southgate has a very good record, but we also has to recognise that he has massively benefited from a generation of top talent coming through our academies, especially in attacking areas, which is down to the changes in coaching instigated 10/15 years ago. He's not having to create a winning team out of journeymen and workhorses.1

Its still s**tAnd in all the competitive games we've won with Southgate...
P61, W36, D14, L11 W% 59%
That's not a bad record.
Played: 10 games
3 wins
4 draws
3 losses
33% win percentage. That’s not a good record.0
