4-0 followd by mass hysteria that it's coming home
  • Would much prefer Saka or Foden to start over Sterling. Sterling has a great knack of popping up with important goals but find the rest of his play utterly frustrating.

    Foden should definitely be starting

I don't know much about Iran. I expect them to sit back and then it will be down to how well we break them down. This can be from set pieces as well as open play so Maguire could be useful. If they are totally negative, I would like to see Rice playing close to a single centre back and an extra attacking midfielder. It is how we should have set up against Port Vale to be fair.

We’re most likely to see 5 at the back, which I find boring and needless at the group stages.  That’ll include 4 out of a possible 5 defenders playing in a system they’ve not played in this season which only adds to arguments against it.

But come kick off I’ll get over it, I’m officially excited now, come on 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

What if the American or Iranian captains get booked first?
I can't imagine the Iranian captain waring one....

Don’t fall into the trap of underestimating Iran. If Reza Ghoochannejhad can’t even get in the squad they must have some real world beaters.

as an honorary Iranian for the day, I have high hopes for us. (winky mcsmileface)

hopefully be a good game, Iran are the highest ranked Asian team sitting 20th in the FIFA rankings and should be better equipped to deal with the weather conditions.

I think it'll come done to how Iran set themselves up.

I reckon England to win by a single goal

I’d imagine he’s starting Saka and Sterling because of their pace, and therefore pushing Irans full backs deep. Should create space for our full backs and Bellingham/mount to play. Foden and Grealish off the bench to create as they tire. See how it goes.

Not too fussed about Foden starting, he's one of my favourite players to watch - But since he made his debut for England, he seems to morph into Albie Morgan, hasnt really impressed me so far

Probably the best chance you will have to see a World Cup win in your life time.  ;)
  • Can't wait for this. Let's go out and get 5 and set out our stall early doors

According to sky Maguire will start in a back 4.  Good news, slightly more attacking than usual at least.

Iran expected to go through with us, so in theory, this should be our toughest group game.

  • Will love it if he scores.
  • "Southgate will opt for a 4-2-3-1 of Pickford; Trippier, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Rice, Bellingham; Mount; Sterling, Kane and Saka."
Don't mind that side, apart from Sterling who is in poor form, would rather Foden.

I would love Harry Maguire to smash it this tournament. The abuse he gets is bang out of order and I think people are forgetting how bad peoples performances become once they sign for ManU, cursed team.

He’s never put a foot wrong for us and I am backing him to have a good tournament, come on Hazza

Well said.  He’s the current scapegoat.

Id really like to see Foden play as a 10, where Mount plays. I don't think we have a better player on the half turn than him presently. He gets stiffled out wide for England.

He did play there during the last friendlies he wasn’t that great, I want Maddison to start there but highly doubtful.

Early team news indicates England's best right-winger is starting tomorrow.
For a minute there I thought you were suggesting Jacob Rees-Mogg would be selected!
Mogg would be an excellent choice if we needed an own goal specialist...
    Quicker than Stockley probably too

Maddison has a slight knock so wont be involved today

Interesting to look back 18 months to the Euros and all the clamour was for Grealish. He’s not getting a mention this time round.
  • After England lose 1-0, I look forward to Southgate moaning about Iran's anti-football tactics...

He's been in awful form and was at fault for 2 goals in our game.

I don't think hoping he doesn't start is unreasonable, although I think the other options we have at centre back are no better.

Hope he gets back to some decent form as he is a much better player than he's been this season.
